Forte di Bard: We stop here to take a moment to soak in the views at Forte di Bard, a historic fortress perched on a hill overlooking the valley. Pit Stop in Ivrea: As we continue our journey, we take the opportunity to stop in Ivrea. This charming town is known for its beautiful architecture, lively piazzas, and delicious local cuisine. Taking a stroll through the historic streets and a great lunch at @L’Orto del Coniglio was also an excellent way to experience this hidden gem. Leaving Greece behind us, we return to Albania, this time in the south. Our first stop here is the Unesco World Heritage site of Gjirokastër. The Ottoman old town is splashed on a mountain side and overlooked by a massive citadel, probably the best preserved in Albania. If you go there, take comfortable shoes and be ready to walk up steep cobbled roads. The old town has become a Mecca for tourists and is quite lively also at night….even maybe a bit too much as the load music for a couple of bars jarred with the old and romantic feel of the town. Luckily for us, our Bnb was just outside the hustle and bustle and so we could absorb the proper old feel of this beautiful location and the true Albania. The setting of Gjirokaster is also quite dramatic with some spectacular views over the Albanian mountains. Lasciata la Grecia alle spalle, torniamo in Albania, questa volta nel sud del paese. La nostra prima tappa è il sito di Argirocastro, patrimonio mondiale dell'Unesco. La città vecchia ottomana è adagiata sul fianco di una montagna e sovrastata da un'imponente cittadella, probabilmente la meglio conservata dell'Albania. Se ci andate, portate con voi scarpe comode e siate pronti a camminare su ripide strade acciottolate. La città vecchia è diventata una mecca per i turisti ed è piuttosto vivace anche di notte....e forse un po' troppo, dato che il volume della musica da un paio di bar in centro stonava non poco con l'atmosfera antica e romantica della città. Per nostra fortuna, il nostro bnb era appena fuori dal trambusto e quindi abbiamo potuto assorbire l'atmosfera antica di questa bellissima località e della vera Albania. Bursa pt. 2 - It might not be Istanbul, but Bursa in #turkey definitely encompasses the real essence of Turkey and its way of life. The beautiful buildings, the life, the food, but most of all the massive bazaar (basically all of the old town centre) just bring an explosion of emotions. Will definitely have to return to Bursa to explore it better. Bursa was the first capital of the Ottoman empire in 1335 although it was founded much before (around 300 BC) and also prospered a lot under the Byzantines. The city was and still is a centre for the trade of silk. __________________ Bursa pt. 2 - Non sarà Istanbul, ma Bursa in #turchia racchiude sicuramente la vera essenza della Turchia e del suo stile di vita. I bellissimi edifici, la vita, il cibo, ma soprattutto l'enorme bazar (in pratica tutto il centro storico) sono un'esplosione di emozioni. Dovrò sicuramente tornare a Bursa per esplorarla meglio. Bursa è stata la prima capitale dell'impero ottomano nel 1335, sebbene sia stata fondata molto prima (intorno al 300 a.C.) e abbia prosperato molto anche sotto i Bizantini. Heading from Bolu to Bursa in Turkey, we make a stop at the UNESCO World Heritage village of #Cumalikizik just outside Bursa. It is a 700 year-old village which is very well preserved and displays perfectly what rural life was like under the Ottomans. On this day we leave Turkey and head into Greece. Border control was a relatively quick affair and it would seem we somehow managed to avoid incurring any speeding fines (Turkey is speed camera crazy!). Another Chinese biker we met at the border was not so lucky and was blocked at the border for an hour over a speeding fine of 7 Turkish Lira....around Eur 0.24 (yipp you are reading correctly...Eur 0.24!!). Once past the border we thought riding to Thessaloniki was too much of a stretch. The other closer options in Greece were Alexandropouli & Kavala on the Aegean coast. We opted for the first one although still visited Kavala the day after. both towns make great overnight stops. Alexandropouli was very lively and is known for its lighthouse, which is the symbol of the city and one of the tallest in Greece. Kavala on the other hand has a rich history and culture, as it was founded by the Thracians, conquered by the Romans, Byzantines, Ottomans and Bulgarians, and liberated by the Greeks in 1912. Kavala is also famous for its tobacco production and trade, which earned it the nickname "the Mecca of tobacco". Our next “Greek-themed” stop in Turkey was the site of the ancient city of Pergamon. Pergamon was a major intellectual and cultural center which flourished under the Attalid Dynasty (281-133 BCE) during the Hellenistic Period. It was the capital of the Kingdom of Pergamon and remained an important city for the Romans, Byzantines, and Ottoman Turks until its abandonment. The city is probably best-known today as one of the seven churches of Asia in the biblical Book of Revelation 2:12-17 where it is referenced as the site "where Satan has his throne" and "where Satan lives" as Pergamon raised several significant structures, monuments, and temples to the Greek gods, the most famous being the Altar of Zeus now in the Pergamon Museum in Berlin. We turn back west on the beginning of our return towards home, heading towards the Greek part of Turkey. Our stop for the day was the island of Cunda (also known as Ayvalik) just east of the island of Lesbos. Cunda is a small island with a very Greek feel to it, although most of its Greek population were terribly persecuted by the Ottomans in the early 20th century. Most of them were replaced by Muslim Turks from Crete. The island today is a laid back holiday location, mainly for internal tourism. The development of the island is very visible although the old town is also being nicely preserved, with plenty of modern and stylish BnB’s popping up all over the place. On the Silk Road and our destination furthest away from home. Safronbolu was an Ottoman city and an important stopover on the East-West route , which allowed the city to develop its trades and market. One can still immerse himself in the winding cobbled streets for a leap back in time at the city’s bazaar. Safronbolu saw its greatest development when one of its residents became the Grand Vizier to Turkey’s Sultan. As the name implies, the city is also very well known for its production of Saffron. Safronbolu era una città ottomana e una tappa importante sulla rotta est-ovest, che ha permesso alla città di sviluppare i suoi commerci e il suo mercato. Our quest eastwards needed a central base. We therefore opted for the city of Bolu in the northern part of central Turkey (on the highway between Istanbul and Ankara). The city is a relatively small one with a big city feel. Little remains of its long history around town, but overall we were happy to have this location as a base for a couple of days as ilife there is quite vibrant. Our second stop in Turkey was the city of Bolu. Before going to town, we also visited the nearby Lake Golcuk. Located at 1200m of altitude, Golcuk is an artificial lake created as a water reservoir in case of a forest fire. It is now a popular picnic area and wanting there are also lodging options here (need advance booking) La nostra seconda tappa in Turchia è stata la città di Bolu. Prima di andare in città, abbiamo visitato anche il vicino lago Golcuk. Situato a 1200 metri di altitudine, Golcuk è un lago artificiale creato come riserva d'acqua in caso di incendio nella foresta vicino. We leave Bulgaria to enter Turkey heading East, as our change of plan meant we stick to the north of the country. Our overnight stop was the seaside town of Sile on the Black Sea, just north of Istanbul. We purposely avoided Istanbul due to its notorious traffic. In any case, Sile was uber lively and a party town. Lasciamo la Bulgaria per entrare in Turchia in direzione est, poiché il nostro cambio di programma ci ha portato a rimanere nel nord del Paese. The lake itself shares its banks between #albania and Montenegro. Shkodër is the most historic town in Albania. The oldest wall of the Shkodër castle dates from the 1st millennium BCE. Having seen many different civilizations pass through or occupy the city, the city remains the traditional market centre for the northern Albania mountain area, where grains, tobacco, potatoes, fruits, and grapes are grown. Il nostro ritorno alla vita urbana ci ha portato nella vicina Scutari, sull'omonimo lago (il più grande dei Balcani). Il lago stesso condivide le sue sponde tra #albania e Montenegro. Scutari è la città più storica dell'Albania. Il muro più antico del castello di Scutari risale al 1° millennio a.C.. Still without a motorcycle to reach one of the most fantastic places in northern Albania....the Lumi i Shales River. You take the speedboat from the Komani Lake dam (around 9 or 10 o'clock) and reach it with a trip of about an hour. The place is quite touristy and not very big. So to be avoided in summer (although the water is frozen). There are restaurants and bars on site if one wants to eat/drink. The cost of the speedboat was €25 per person. At three in the afternoon we left again for Koman where a suicidal driver was waiting for us 😂. He did the whole Koman tunnel in reverse and the descent at 100 mph (telling us he has no license 🤦♂️). Anyway, we arrived safely at our excellent residence (Vila Franceza...with private parking) where Katy (Our KTM) was waiting to sweep us away in the direction of Schkoder where we spent the evening. The road (a disaster for the first 14km) seemed easier this time.....either because of the freshness after the icy river or for having driven in off-road mode 😂). Lake Koman (Albanian: Liqeni i Komanit) is a reservoir on the Drin River in northern Albania. Lake Koman is surrounded by dense forested hills, vertical slopes, deep gorges, and a narrow valley, completely taken up by the river. Besides the Drin, it is fed by the Shala and Valbona Rivers. The lake stretches in an area of 34 km (13 sq mi), its width being 400 m (0.25 mi). The narrowest gorge, which is surrounded by vertical canyon walls, is more than 50 m (0.031 mi) wide. The reservoir was constructed between 1979 and 1988 near the village of Koman with a height of 115 m (377 ft).
