Track was fast and flowing at Sheffield. The grass is still quite grippy, but that won't last long. Headed to the 1st round of Sheffield's Summer series in Sunday. This would be my LD3's first run outside so didn't know what to expect. Put the kit setup on it, bolted on some Cut staggers and Mezzos and off we went. Practice was dampish but the buggy felt pretty good despite it being damp. For round 1 I decided to for a softer front spring to see how that felt. Managed 3rd in round with a good run to start with. Shortened the rear camber link for round 2 to try and get a bit more rotation in and more traction out. It worked well and knocked 5 seconds off my first run which got me another 3rd in round. Round 3 and now the grip was dropping as the grass was starting to wear a bit. Shortened the rear wheel base a tad again to try to gain a bit more rear traction and managed to go 2 tenths quicker than round 2 and to say that the grip had dropped off then I was happy with that. Another 3rd in round. Round 4 and I left the car unchanged. Improved again to get an extra lap, 3rd in around again 😂. But to improve every round I'm very happy with that. Lined up 4th in the A, got away well but lost traction on the exit of turn one and had a half spin which dropped me back and caused a bit of chaos 😳. Got going again and got back up to 4th and got under the wing of 3rd. Had a great battle but couldn't find away passed. Driffted wide on the table top which put me on the wrong side of the pipe but managed to get over it without a Marshall. It dropped me back but I was able to catch up back to 3rd but still couldn't get passed. A slight bobble by 3rd a short time later got me through though and that was that really, just concentrated on keeping it clean making my way through the lapped traffic to bring it home in 3rd. Their's not much left of the old Schumacher Laydown, the buggy that got me back racing. Its been stripped of parts to build up the number of spares I have for the LD3 where possible as well as supplying some bits to the Cougar Classic. The Laydown was a great buggy and we had some great racing moments. Some great memories of racing at Sheffield. Managed to get F4 and then improved the year later to get F3. It's finally time to take out the gear diff and put in the ball diff. Got pretty tired of racing on carpet through the Autumn/winter so had all January and February off from racing as I just couldn't get motivated to do it. Thankfully it's time to head outside for some proper racing. A bit of bench testing for the Cougar Classic. Noticed the rear had a slight kick to it due to a bit too much pack in the rear shocks. Sunday was a trip to Sheffield for the club day. Came into this with new glued down fusion slims and finaly managed to get hold of a front roll bar. First run and I was pleased to find the car was transformed from an edgy car that was trying to fall over itself at the front to something that was a joy to drive and I could push it a bit. A good chunk of the fast guys where missing for this one so took advantage and good consistent runs saw me TQ all 4 rounds of qual. So started A1, made a good start but a slight bobble halfway round the first lap dropped me down to 2rd. Had a job on staying with Adam, but on lap 7 a little mistake put me back in the lead. This time I was able to hold on to it and pull away to take the win. Probably the first time I've enjoyed the LD3 with fusions on the front, still not perfect but it's a big step in the right direction. Headed to Sheffield For round 4 of their Winter series. Had to dust down the LD3 as this was the first time out in about 2 months after a little RC break. It was a late decision to race so with no new tyres to mount a pair of well worn Cactus and fusion slims where bolted on to the car and off we went. Was a bit rusty in round 1 and found the front of the car was falling over it's self in the twisty bits but came away with a 8th in round. For round 2 Simon Charity suggested I use a pair of Cam Charity RC worn fusion slims which had been glued down and had glue up the side walls. The car felt much better, still plenty of steering but none of the grab, so deffo the way to go. Qualifying results of 4, 6 and 5 would see me line up 6th in the A final. The final was error free but I didn't have the pace to improve so finished 6th which I'm very happy with, didn't think I'd be able to hang on to a place in the A after round 1. Was great to have a run out again and see that Sheffield Off Road & Rally RC Club is still going fantastically well with great turn outs. With the Christmas break still in full swing I had the chance to go to @mbmodels_rccarshop and experience the Wednesday nights worlds. It's a highly popular series that attracts 90+ drivers, and on a weeknight that's pretty insane. 3 rounds of qualifying and a final in this series to try and save some time and with only dropping 1 round it mixes up the final grid quite a lot. First round of qualifying was a disaster, too aggressive on the steering in turn one twice would see my car fly off into the wall, and with other tumbles it would see me get a 50 in round, so pressure was on to have 2 clean runs to move me up the order Pitting with Rob Fox was a huge help and the advice was flowing so changes where made to the car between each of the following rounds which ultimately gave me a much more stable car, cheers for the advice, much appreciated 👍. Round 3 was a cleaner run, but it still included a tumble, 39th in round. Round 3 was slightly quicker again, no tumbles but steady, that time got me another 39th in round. So qualified 48th out of 89 drivers which lined me up E8. Final was pretty scrappy, was on my lid in the opening lap after a little tangle so dropped to last, but managed a decent run after that to finish 6th, only 4 seconds behind 3rd. Surprisingly all my runs with my normal Cut stagger front tyres where slower than every run I did at the Batley meeting a few weeks back where I was running the fusion slim front tyres. Even though I thought I struggled with them at the time. Maybe I should give them another go 🤔. Was great to have a catch up with @torkertony and some of the Sheffield guys. Better late than never. Last Saturday was round 3 of Batley Buggy Clubs winter series at @mbmodels_rccarshop. This one was going to be an uphill struggle due to the fact this track layout has been down for a couple of months, so most people there knew it very well, but it was my first time on it. Also was trying the new Fusion slims for the first time which made things even more difficult. Soon found out just how much more steering the fusions gave, way too much for my old thumbs to keep up with. Tried to dial out steering all day but never managed to feel comfortable, just couldn't get the car to flow round the track. Saying that though, they felt great in the fast corners, just too much in the medium to slow corners. Asking around for advice it seems I'd need a front roll bar to calm them down. Qualified 35th out of 59 drivers which was a fair bit lower than what I normally manage at Batley. Started 8th in the D and finished 8th. Round 2 of the @schumacher_racing off road Masters at Worksop. Was a bit of a struggle with the LD3, felt great in the high speed corners but lazy in the slow twisty sections so struggled a bit. Qualified in a final lower than last time out at Worksop and had a disaster of a final, started 2nd finished 7th or 8th. It was time for the new @schumacher_racing LD3's first outing so took the trip to @mbmodels_rccarshop for their Saturday championship. Wasn't expecting much, just wanted to get used to the buggy, but it instantly felt great in practice. More agile and nimble than my old Laydown and very stable in the corners which was a great confidence boost. It was FTQ qualifying so only your best round counted to place you in the 2 leg finals. Track layout was the same as it was when I ran the old car a few weeks ago so it was a good comparison between the cars. Was instantly faster with the LD3, going 5 seconds quicker than I managed with the old Laydown 👍. In the end I qualified 21st out of 68 drivers which put me 5th in the C final. First final tuned out to be a crash test. Had a huge off halfway down the straight as I ran too close to the side of the track and I over-corrected. The car speared off to the right due to the lower grip that close to the edge of the track and flew into the opposite pipe. Plastic and buggy went flying in the air and I thought the car was done. Amazingly the car eventually landed on its wheels and when I moved it out of the way of the other cars for a marshell to recover it I found the car was actually fine, all the flying plastic was shards of track pipe. So carried on and finished the run, but finished last of the runners. 2nd final was better, got up to 3rd from 5th but a little error put me back to 5th which is where I finished which placed me 6th in the final after 2 legs. So all in all mega happy with the result with the new LD3, a great first outing. Back to MB Models to kick off my carpet season to take part in Batley Buggy Clubs winter season. It was an eye opener that's for sure trying to get used to racing on carpet again with it's mega high grip. Improved every run and started to feel more comfortable by the end of the day. Best rounds of 24 and 22 would line me up 9th in the C final which is higher than I thought I'd be. The final probably eneded up as my worst run of the day, getting caught up in others mistakes and making my own, still managed to keep 9th though so was happy for my first go on carpet of the season. Great day spent in Worksop for round 1 of the @schumacher_racing indoor masters. The turn out was huge which made for a very long day, but it was worth it. The track team did a great job with the layout, it flowed really well and had some great features including the huge tabletop. Grip was surprisingly high for Worksop and my LD1 felt great which boosted my confidence. Never got a flawless run in qualifying but still managed my highest qualifying result at Worksop with starting 10th in the E final. Had nothing to lose so just pushed, and I did manage to get my fastest lap of the day in that final. With the final results in for the Mid East Regionals I was very happy to see I finished 17th overall. 86 drivers competed and 48 out of those did the three rounds, so well happy to be 17th out of 48. A good improvement over last year's position of 33rd out of 45 who did the 3 rounds. Took the trip down to BMR for the final regional race of the season. We where greeted by a very tricky track. Astro isn't my best surface due to lack of running on it, so it was always going to be struggle. Grip was really high also which caused a lot of problems. First round was clean and bagged a 16 in round. Rounds 2 and 3 where shocking, didn't get much luck in amongst the other cars giving me a 22 and 19. Even though going into the final round I was sitting 20th, 1 point ahead of 21st and I didn't want to get bumped down to C1, so round 4 needed to be a good one. Luckily for me it all came together and I managed my fastest run of the day which cemented me 20th overall, and 10th in the B final. No pressure starting from last so just went for it and enjoyed it. Again I managed a clean run and improved by finishing 8th and getting my 2nd best result of the season. Mega happy with making the B final 3 times throughout the season. Tough day at Sheffield for the final round of the Summer series. Definitely a day of two halves, rounds 1 to 3 were wet so grip was low, then the grass dried in a flash for round 4 and the finals and the grip went through the roof. Best round scores of 4th and 5th lined me up 7th in the A final. Made a good start but struggled with grip rolls all the way through the 4 mins, but still managed to pick up a place and finish 6th. Managed to take 4th in the 2WD championship which is great, used the Cougar Classic in the first half and then the Laydown in the second half of the season so very happy with that. Took a trip down to WBMCC for round 5 of the Mid East regionals, and with this being on grass I wanted a good result as its my preferred surface. Found in the 2 rounds of practice that grip was high despite it being on grass, so a couple of tweaks where made to the car for qualifying. First 2 rounds of qual where absolutely mega, a 9th in round 1, then a 6th in round 2 which blew me away, never been that high up in standings. Round 3 was a write off but going into round 4 I was hanging on to a top 10 place. Had a good run but knew I wouldn't improve on my best 2 rounds but still came away with a good 10th in round. Unfortunately I got bumped down 1 place to 11th. I was mega happy though as it was my mate @camcharityRC who bumped me for his first of probably many A finals 👌. So lined up on pole in the B final which is my highest ever starting position. Made a good start and pulled out a nice cushion, but half way through made a little mistake on the tabletop, luckily the car cartwheeled back on to its wheel but it dropped me back closer to the pack, and knocked D my rythem a little. Then a couple of laps later at the same place I made the same mistake, but this time I wasn't as lucky and I ended up on my roof. Took the Marshall a bit of time to turn me over and I dropped to 4th. Luckily others where struggling with the falling grip levels and I was soon back in 2nd. A charging Mat Holroyd caught and passed me with 4 corners to go, but 2 corners later he rolled, giving me 2nd back which is where I finished. Chuffed to bits with that result, my best regional result ever by a good few places, hopefully it will improve my chances of getting my F3 ranking 🤞. My Schumacher Laydown felt great all day, its still doing great even though its starting to get a bit long in the tooth. Pretty successful day at a drier that expected Sheffield for round 5 of the Summer series. With the next round of regionals being on grass I brought out the Schumacher Laydown for this one to get some running on grass with it under my belt. Qual went well, 2, 2nds in round and 2 3rds so lined up 3rd in the A. Made a clean start and hung on to 3rd but unfortunately on lap 5 I got a bit of snap oversteer which hooked me up on a pipe which I couldn't get off. Got Marshalled pretty quickly but lost 6 seconds and dropped quite a fair way down the field. Knew I had pace and plenty of time to make up the places which I did, and I was soon back up to 3rd. Nipped into 2nd with a lap to go, but couldn't hold off Cam who got his place back at the line, great fun 👍. Great to get back behind the sticks again with a month off racing due to the weather. So with no racing for what seems like ages due to the weather, I thought I'd put a little update on about the Cougar Classic. So after Round 2 at Sheffield where I binned it big styleee on the last lap, I got home to find the crash had cracked the Schumacher Carbon fibre shock tower. So wanting to replace it with something more beefy I contacted Pukka Parts to see what they could offer. They did a direct replacement for the Cougar Classic as well as a Cougar2 style tower which gives more setup options. Both these are over 1mm thicker than the Schu version so they should be a lot stronger 👍. Ordered both in the end as I figured the Cougar2 version would be great to try alongside big bore shocks. Got delivered quickly and was very happy with the quality of the Carbon fibre, they look lovely. Fitted the Cougar2 version along with my spare set of big bores for round 3, and while I found it landed the jumps better, it seemed to lose a bit in the corners, so for round 4 I went back to the original small bores and it felt a lot better in the corners and came away with my best result of the season👍. So very happy with the parts, they perform well and look the business, and so far have held up great. Great day at Sheffield for round 3 of the Summer season. A couple of fast guys where missing for this round, so was hoping to capitalise. Track was small and tight for this one, and heavy rain the night before made practice and the first round of qualifying tricky, but by round 3 it was dry. Steady first run gave me a 5th in round, a front spring change for round 2 got me a 4th. Round 3 was my best with a 3rd in round. The Cougar Classic was still feeling sluggish on turn in though the twisty part of the track despite the front spring change, so a front shock position change for round 4 was made and it made a nice improvement. The run itself was poor though with a mistake, but lap times where faster than before so it was staying for the final. lined up 5th in the A, first lap was poor, got taken out in the opening few corners and dropped to 9th so after that just got my head down and tried to make the places back up. The car was feeling great now though, alot more nimble and I soon moved back up the field, setting my fastest lap of day in the process, and to my surprise I managed to finish 4th. So mega happy with that, and got my best result of the season so far 👍. Riding the crest of the wave from round 2 at Broxtowe with my best ever regional result, it was time to head to Deerdale RC for round 3 and it was back down to earth with a bang. The track was huuuge with it being a 1/8th scale track and even though they said they'd make the track more suitable for 1/10th scale, I couldn't get to grips with having the car so far away from the rostrum at certain points of the track. Others seemed to adapt but I just couldn't do it so I was literally just crawling around the furthest away parts of the track. Even so in round 1 I got an 18th in round (out of 47 drivers) with confidence up I pushed in round 2 but 3 big offs ( twice on the back straight) in the furthest away section killed that run. It was obvious from then on I had to just crawl round that section. Round 3 was clean and got a 20th in round, then round 4 bagged me another 18th, so I lined up C2. The final was a disaster, I knew I'd struggle to hold on to 2nd and with 4 mins down I was in 4th spot. Then going into the far corner I noticed 2 cars had tangled at the entry so I backed off to pick my way through but the 3 cars behind me just pilled in and it was soon a 6 car tangled mess. I got flipped over and sods law was the last car to get Marshalled so that was that a 7th place finish🤦. Round 2 of Sheffield off road and rally clubs summer series. Decided to give the Cougar Classic a run out as it's on grass so it would be perfect for it 👍. 22 cars signed up for 2WD so the aim of the day was get into the A final. Car felt good in practice, but the front end felt a bit soft, so a spring change was made which improved things. Qualification went well, all 4 rounds I got a 4th so lined up in 4th in the A. Final didn't go my way unfortunately, 2 errors that I hadn't made all day dropped me back. Made it back up to 4th after the 1st mistake but the second mistake was on the last lap which cost me 2 places and with no time to make up the positions 6th is where I finished. So disappointing result but happy with the pace I had with the Cougar Classic, but that's how it goes sometimes. Slight tweak to the front pistons I think for round 3 and we'll have another go. Finaly finished the restoration of my Kyosho Lazer ZX. Got this at Christmas 1990 or 91. Remember my dad building it up for me and painting the original shell in the days after Christmas. I never raced it properly, but drove the wheels off it round a track I made in the garden for a good few years. The original shell didn't last long so I believe we bought a Racecraft ZXR bodyshell to replace it with. I also remember bending the front shock tower and cracking the front diff housing when I ran it into the tyre of a parked car 😂. Fast forward to the Covid lock down and like a lot of people I went and picked my old RC cars up from my parents house where they sat unloved for 20+ years and started the restoration. Full strip down, clean and rebuild, it was in good shape apart from the bodyshell so a new one from penguin was ordered and a replica sticker set off Ebay. Along with restoring this and a Schumacher ProCat I got the racing bug again with a modern buggy so concentrated on that instead of finishing off the ZX, but this weekend I finally pulled my finger out and finished it. It's how it was built that Christmas many years ago bar the front shock tower and diff housing. Round 2 of the Mid East regionals yesterday at Broxtowe. Coming from a strong result at Sheffield in round one, I was hoping I could back that up, but with never being to Broxtowe before I was thinking it was going to be tough to do. A big field of 62 drivers turned up and we where greeted by a fast flowing Astro track with some tricky jump sections. My Laydown felt really good from the go, nice and stable so put some decent times down in practice which was a good confidence boost. Carried that over to qualifying with a first round score of 20th in round which included a little off that required a Marshall. 2nd round was better still with a solid run and managed to get an extra lap which gave me a 16th in round. The sun was now blazing meaning the sand started to come up which decreased the grip so the car was a bit more of a handful for round 3 but still managed a good run, 19th in round. At this point I was 20th overall, which would put me last in the B final, and having never qualified in the B before I was desperate to hang on to it. Bolted on a new set of tyres for round 4 to help find some extra grip and another solid run gave me another 19 in round which not only cemented me in the B, it moved me up a place into 9th, absolutely over the moon with my first B final. The final turned out to be my worst run of the day but It was good enough to hold on to 9th giving me my best ever regional result. So a brilliant day on and off the track with good laughs with the Sheffield gang. Took a trip over to Robin Hood Raceway yesterday to take part in my first RHR Classic. Bit different from the norm as all buggies had to be rear motor so you got to see some real classics on track. It was also run on the clay track which hosted the 2015 EFRA European championships. Its now been carpeted over for easier maintenance but its the same layout and grip is still low. There where 2 classes on the day, pre 1999 and post 1999, I was in the pre 99 with my Schumacher Cougar Classic. In fact this race was the reason I bought the Cougar Classic so I could take part in this excellent event. Race format was different from the norm also as it used the Reedy format instead of the usual 4 rounds of qualifying then finals. Reedy format is no qualifying, just racing. Each race you are up against different drivers in your class and you score points depending where you finish, 1 for first, 10 for 10. At the end of 5 races your totals are added up and put in a table with the other drivers and the driver with the least points wins the event. Heavy rain over night meant the track was soaking wet for practice which was interesting but fun, was great to see the cars coming off the track covered in mud. The sun came out after a while though which gave way to a glorious day so it soon dried out. My races went pretty well getting 3 6th places, 1 10th ( a pretty big hit knocked my steering off centre in that one) and then a 4th. Was great to race in 2 of the races with UK legend Jamie booth who back in the day finished 3rd in the world Championships and won the European Championships. Needless to say he's still got it and he was soon lapping me 😂. So in the end I finished 41st out of 58 drivers which I'm pretty happy about having never run on that track before and very little time running the Cougar Classic in a race environment. Cracking day at Sheffield for round one of the Mid East regionals. This was their first time hosting a regional and they did a amazing job. The track was brilliant and different with it having grass, Astro and carpet and a huge table top infront of the rostrum, it was great fun. 👍. Car felt good in practice so only a couple of setup changes and a esc tweak where made for round 1. Round 1 was fantastic with a quick clean run which got me a 12 in round, my best ever round in a regional. That's as good as it got though as Round 2 I made a silly mistake on the last lap which beached me on a pipe then rounds 3 and 4 all involved incidents with other cars which saw me drop down the time sheet. So I lined up C1 which on any other day I'd be chuffed with, but was slightly disappointed as I knew I had pace for the B. Made a clean start to stay infront and made a bit of a gap to 2nd, but then fellow Sheffield racer Mat Holroyd moved into 2nd and started to close the gap. The gap came down to 1 seconds so I just tried to keep it neat and tidy which just about payed off to get me the win, which again is my best ever result in a regional. Tough day at Sheffield for round 1 of the Summer series. Low grip normally suits me but I did nothing but struggle to control the car all day. Made the decision to run on worn tyres and save the new ones for the regional in 2 weeks, so I'm hoping the struggles where mainly down to that 🤞. Round 1 was a write off with transponder issues but managed to make it to the A final starting 7th. Final was again a struggle but just about managed to finish where I started. Was still a great day though, and learned a couple of things setup wise. Kicked off the outdoor season on Sunday with a trip to the excellent Robin Hood Raceway for the Bradby Cup. With a different qualifying format meaning all rounds counted, and trying to get used to a bumpy track after running on snooker table smooth indoor tracks all winter, it would make for an interesting day. Practice was damp but with a wet setup on my car it felt great. The track soon dried out though so changes where made before round 1. Round 1 and 2 were steady runs with a few mistakes at one corner in particular but was happy enough with the runs. Round 3 was my best of the day with no mistakes but again it was steady due to me not having the confidence to push. Round 4 had one little bobble so ended up 2 seconds off my best run but again, I was happy enough. So round scores of 56, 66, 55 and 61 put me 59th out of 91 drivers, the highest I've ever qualified in a big event. It put me 9th in the F final 👍. Final was scrappy, got caught up in a big mess in turn 2 which dropped me back to near last, but plugged away and climbed back up to take 7th at the end. Visited Worksop for another crack on the slippery floor on Sunday. Was greeted by a fantastic, but hard looking track. The table top was huuuge, it also had a tricky run up so if you didn't line it up right you where flying off to the side. Then a few corners after that was a very tricky double where the down ramp was right on the entry of a 90 degree left, so the landing had to be perfect to make the corner. Luckily for us less skilled drivers it was rollable which is what I did. With a more aggressive setup on the car than last time out it felt a lot better, first 2 rounds I was doing quick 13 lappers with a few mistakes thrown in, so I knew I could get 14 laps in with a clean run. Had just that in round 3 and just scrapped the 14 lapper. Round 4 was even better and managed a quick 14 laps, 8 seconds off 15 laps, if I was more confident on the huge table top and that tricky double I'd have got 15 laps I reckon. Even so with my best rounds both being 41 I lined up 5th in the E final (F was the lowest) The Final wasn't brilliant though, was dead last after half a lap after being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Probably pushed a bit too much trying to catch up but I kept it rubber side down and climbed back up to 6th at the end. Loved the 2 races I've done at Worksop, the surface is like nothing else and it's fantastic getting to watch some of the best in the UK battle it out on the track. With my entry confirmed for this year's Robin Hood Raceway Classic, it was time to find a more suitable motor for the Cougar Classic. While it handled the 7T pretty well it needed something tamer (and so did I 🤣) , and with most places limiting vintage class to 10.5 that's what I went for. Luckily for me one came up 2nd hand so saved some pennies also 👍. So new motor fitted along with a smaller spur gear and bigger pinion to get a more suitable gear Ratio for the new motor. Surprisingly I had a good day at MB Models for round 6 and the final round of Batley Buggy Clubs winter series. It would be my first race on the new track layout, but those who get to race on Wednesday nights already had 3 events on it so I'd be very much on the back foot. So due to that I decided to save some money and run tyres that had already done a meeting, and just use it as a chsnce to play about with setup, mainly rear link length. First round was scrappy, and got tangled with cars a couple of times but managed to get some clean laps in. 2nd round I changed to a longer rear link to see if I could feel a difference. I could, the car felt a lot better in the fast corners it really freed the rear up, and I managed to get an extra lap over round 1. Round 3 was a decent run, but again a couple of mistakes where made but it was slightly faster than round 2. So with rounds of 34, 33 and 30 I was pretty low down on the order, which I expected. Then round 4 came and I just clicked with everything, decent laptimes and no mistakes saw me knock 8 seconds off my best run, 0.70 seconds from getting the extra lap. That time gave me a round score of 21 which saw me move up the finals by quite a way, ending up last in the D final. Never any pressure when you start last so I just pushed in the final, making up spots in the opening lap and just trying to hang on. Would have a good little fight with Alan in the closing stages as he was flying back up the field but I managed to hold on and finish 4th. So despite my low expectations I came away with my joint 2nd best result this season. Championship wise I finished 29th out of 118 drivers that took part, 59 of those did the required 4 rounds so I'm well happy with that. Well the Cougar Classic did me proud, the little improvements added to the car really helped. It took a couple of rounds to get used to the car again, rear motor cars are really different to drive than today's buggies. By round 3 I was feeling more confident and had started to get the hang of getting the car to turn. I was in the top heat of qual so had to make sure I didn't impead the faster guys which in its self was good practice on how to let cars by without losing time. The aim of the day was to try and hold on to a place in the A final as last time out in the Classic I dropped into the B. So with round scores of 8, 7, 6, 6, I managed to line up 7th in the A 👍. The final went great, stayed out of trouble and had a trouble free run to bring the old girl home in 5th, even broke into the 13 second lap times for the first time in the day. Was great fun and chuffed to bits with the result. The Cougar Classic will be getting its 2nd run tomorrow at Sheffield. After its first run a month or so ago there where a couple of little issues that needed sorting. The kit suspension seemed quite stiff, especially the front so Blue front and grey rear springs have been put on to soften things up. Probably the biggest issue was the servo, on paper it seemed quick but on track it was far too sluggish, a real struggle in the twisty bits. So a Savox has been installed to speed things up. Thirdly was the PT. Due to it being taken out of my Laydown the wire was quite short so I had to mount it on the chassis which I think caused the problem. So a new PT was ordered (always good to have a back up anyway) and with the original lead I was able to place it higher up on to the servo like in my Laydown, so fingers crossed I don't get anymore dropped laps. Well that's my Worksop cherry well and truly popped. The rubberised corck floor was like no other surface that's I've raced on, and it's that that pulls in the big names of RC. Practice went OK, just plodded around trying to get an feeling for the low grip. For qualifying I was down in the first heat which is always a struggle, but round one was pretty good and came away with a 51'st in round out of 62 drivers, not bad. Round 2 was even better and managed to get in an extra lap which gave me 49th in round. Round 3 was a horror show, cars getting tangled up with each other, got a few knocks and drove to hard trying to make up for it so made lots of errors, 54th in round. That dropped me down quite a fair way so need a decent 4th round, which thankfully I got with my best time of day which got me 48th in round. All that got me 6th in the F final which was the bottom final which I was disappointed with, but when I noticed which other drivers were in there I wasn't so disappointed, just shows how good the field is at Worksop. Had a good start and moved to 3rd, but dropped back to 5th after a little bobble. Stayed there for most of the race up until a few corners to go. I caught up with a gaggle of 3 cars, manged to sneak up the inside of 1 of them just before the big table top, then again in the final corner I manged to sneak up the inside of the other 2 cars which where battling away which saw me take 2nd place 👍. Today was round 5 of Batley Buggy Clubs winter series at MB Models. Came into it after a week of man flu so wasn't feeling my best. Track layout was the same, but the placements of the jumps were different which took a few rounds to get used to. Struggled a bit in rounds 1 and 2 but the round scores of 28 and 31 weren't all that bad considering the mistakes I made. Round 3 and things felt better, but still had one tiny mistake which cost me a couple of seconds but got me a 27th in round. Then round 4 was finally mistake free, improved my best time by 2 seconds but it got me a surprising 18th in round 😲 which bumped me up a few places in the overalls, to put me 5th in the D final. Held my position at the start of the opening lap, but tangled with another car at the end of the lap which dropped me to last. With nothing to lose I just put my head down and cracked on, picking up places as others made mistakes. Kept it clean from then on and moved up to 3rd which is where I finished which gave me my best result of the season so far. Mega happy with the result considering the week I'd had. Fun filled day racing at Sheffield for round 4 of thier winter series. Qual started great with two 2nds in round, then a 3rd and a 4th so lined up 3rd in the A. Coming to the race on well used tyres by the time it was finals time the rears had dropped off the cliff, and with the track also losing grip it was a pretty messy final so I dropped a place to finish 4th 👍. Great debut for the Cougar Classic at Sheffield today. Was great fun to drive and very different to a modern buggy. Front suspension needs work as its bouncing up on landing, and probably needs a faster steering servo but apart from that it dealt with the track well. May also need to relocate the transponder as I got some missed laps in qual and the race. Managed to start B2 and made a clean start and soon moved up to 1st. Made a little bobble a few laps in and dropped to 4th but managed to get back upto 1st after issues up front. From then on I had a mega nose to tail battle with Ben, I couldn't shake him so had to make sure I hit every apex to not leave the door open. Once again my transponder missed a lap but luckily Rich on race control noticed and corrected it at the end. Today was round 4 of Batley Buggy clubs winter series with a stacked grid of 74 drivers. Track was pretty much the same as round 3 and the Schumacher Xmas GP apart from a couple of jumps had been moved slightly. So I knew I'd be chasing 19 laps. The Laydown felt great, but once again I couldn't get that clean run in so I was close but not close enough. My worst run was 4 seconds of 19 laps and my best was 1 second off, so close in all 4 rounds. Lined up 6th in the E final and managed to stay out of trouble to move into 4th. Was pushing on as @james_seabrightrc in 3rd wasn't that far ahead. Piled as much pressure on as I could but James kept it rubber side down to take 3rd by a second. So all in all was a great day's racing, frustrating not to get 19 laps in qualifying, but I know the pace is there. It's the little things. One of the take home notes from the Procat's first outing at Sheffield a few months back was that the gear ratio was way off. Mega acceleration but a very low top speed. Looked up the recommended ratio for the motor and it said 7.0:1, I was running 9.82 with my 22 pinion and 89 spur 🤣. So I looked at the Procat ratio chart to get closer to what I needed. Had the Standard 86 Spur from my Cougar classic kit that I don't use due to having the Pro transmission so put that on along with a 28 pinion to get me close. Unfortunately even though the original manual says it would fit it just wouldn't, the mesh was far too tight. I'm thinking brushless motors might be slightly bigger than brushed so there's not as much room for the motor to move 🤷♂️. So back to the chart, and it says a 83 spur and the 28 pinion would get me the ratio needed. Managed to find one at MB Models, they had 1 in stock. Unfortunately Royal Mail lost it. Then I discovered Schumie spares and they had 3 new old stock, so got one that thankfully turned up today. So now the ratio is a better 7.20 👍. 2022 turned out to be a pretty successful year racing RC, with quite a few 1st's. Took part in my first Regional series where I managed to improve my F ranking from F5 to F4. Took part in my first ever National series event and got to see the best in the country battle it out. Won my first ever trophy by finishing 2nd in SORAR's summer series. Also managed to come away with an Easter egg from Bury Metro after finishing 3rd in my final. Then to round it off I recently won a 2nd place trophy, selection box and a UDI drift car at the Schumacher Xmas GP. Brilliant day at MB Models for the Schumacher GP yesterday . Over 90 drivers where in attendance so plenty of competition. My qualifying rounds saw me 50th which put me 4th in the F Final. Had the pace to be higher, but couldn't get those clean runs in. Made a good start and avoided the 1st lap carnage to move up to 2nd, shortly after I was in 1st. The car in 2nd was quicker and charging but managed to keep him at bay until the last minute where a slight over shoot on a jump saw him move ahead. Managed to hold on to 2nd though which bagged me a selection box and a another trophy for the cabinet 🏆. Saturday was round 3 of Batley Buggy clubs winter series. Came into it from a terrible week where I'd picked up the winter bug that's doing the rounds. Was greeted by a brilliant looking track, the big table top had been put in along with a pretty big kicker 👍. First round or qual was a DNF as halfway through my run my pinion gear came off, so had no drive. Tried to have clean runs after that mishap but all 3 of the remaining qualifying runs where littered with mistakes, my best rounds of 28 and 33 would line me up 4th in the E final, a final lower than I've been in for round 1 and 2. Made a clean start and moved up to 3rd, but once again mistakes happened and I dropped to 5th which is where I finished. So bit of a disappointing result but the track was mega fun and had plenty of laughs in the pits. Great day at @sheffield_off_road_and_rally for round 2 of their winter series. The Laydown felt great and qual rounds of 1st,2nd, 2nd and 1st lined me up 2nd in the A main as I lost out on the tie break due to a slower fastest run than David. Made a good start, but a roll on lap 2 dropped me down the field. Had some good battles and got back to 2nd and tried to catch up to Dave, but our lap times where pretty similar. Caught up a bit due to traffic but in the end I couldn't bridge the gap. The Cougar Classic is a slow burner but we're getting there with the build. Electrics are in, gone with the old electrics out of my Laydown. So we've got a Hobbywing 7.5 motor coupled with the XR10 and a cheapish Servo to complete it. I've got the pro transmission installed but ideally I want to run a 10.5T but will see how I get on with the 7.5 and take it from there. The old ProCat did pretty well at @sheffield_off_road_and_rally last Sunday. It's first race day in 30 odd years and it managed to finish 4th in the final with modern day buggies. Setup wasn't great, shocks are far too stiff and the car sits way too high so it just wanted to traction roll. So going to fit my spare set of big bore shocks to sort that out next time. Gearing was way off also, running a far too big spur gear, so I've now fitted a smaller one from the stock rere Cougar trans and got a couple of bigger pinions on the way. Other than that it was great, couple of screws worked loose but I know to check them now. With the release of the Procat classic, spares are now readily available for my original ProCat, so it's time to take it on the track to mix it up with the modern 4WD buggys. First thing though is a total strip down and check over and fit a modern Servo for the steering, and sort out a couple of niggles. I've run it up and down the road a lot, but I've never raced it, so really looking forward to see how it holds up in a race environment, hopefully the 30 year old plastics hold up 😂. Saturday saw a packed MB Raceway for round 1 of Batley Buggy clubs winter series, 63 drivers made the trip making for a very competitive field. Track layout was fast and tricky where one little bobble would cost you dear. Made a solid start in round 1, no mistakes but wasn't really pushing, just tried to get used to the grip and the layout which got me 18 laps in 315 seconds which put me 33rd in round . Buggy felt good but had a bit too much roll at the rear so I ran a shorter rear link in round 2. 2 laps in to round 2 and I grip rolled and off I went into the wall. Got Marshalled quickly and cracked on. Car felt much better with the setup change though and managed 18 laps in 305, quicker than R1 and another 33rd in round. Round 3 was mega, pushed pretty hard and kept it clean but frustratingly I missed out on a 19 lapper by half a second, so close but it still got me probably my best qualifying round ever with a 23rd in round out of 63 drivers. Round 4 and I pushed as hard as I could, a minute to go and I was looking certain for the 19 lapper, then I grip rolled in the same place as round 2 so 19 laps wasn't meant to be. With rounds of 33 and 23 to count it put me 7th in the D final (31st of 63) which is easily my highest placing in a field this big, out qualifying a lot of guys who normally beat me, so was very happy no matter what happened in the final. The final went pretty well, a couple of mistakes during the run but managed to gain a place to finish in 6th. Last Sunday was the first indoor meeting of the season at Sheffield's pretty unique venue of a events marquee. Not a big space to work with but the club do a great job with what they have and they came up with a brilliantly fun track layout. Always seemed to struggle on carpet as I can't get my head around the high grip and the reactions needed to point and shoot the car. To my surprise though I was never out side the top 4 in qualifying or the race, maybe all the running on Astro during the summer has sharpened my skills. 2 3rd places in qualifying lined me up 4th in the A final which turned to 3rd after Adrian had to leave early. Today was round 6 and final round of Bury Metro RC clubs summer series, it was also my last outdoor race of the year. Last 2 rounds at Bury had been pretty disappointing so was hoping for better things in this round to improve my overall position. Qualifying went ok and my strongest 2 runs lined up 5th in the D final. Made a good start and soon moved up to 3rd. Mid way through I'd got up to first, had some close battles to hold on to 1st and hold on I did to claim my best result of the season at Bury. Was very happy with how constant my lap times where too. Finished 29th in the championship out of 121 drivers, top 30 was the goal so I just scraped in 👍. Today was the final round of the Sheffield off road and rally summer series. Went into the round sitting 2nd in the championship with a guaranteed top 3 overall. Qualifying went really well with a 1st and 3 3rds in round which placed me 2nd in the A final. Made a good start and held 2nd, moved up to 1st a couple of times but Lee was too quick and he soon got passed to move back up to 1st. The battle was then on for second. Was a close one but he pulled a mega move round the outside of turn 1 to drop me to 3rd. Stayed under his rear wing on the last lap and there wasn't much between us at the end, 1 tenth of a second. The result bagged me 2nd in the championship, 1 point behind Rich in 1st. Great season and mega happy with 2nd. Fancied something different for a while to compliment the Schumacher Laydown. Didn't really want to go 4WD due to cost and low numbers in that class, so I thought something rear motored. Hearing Schumacher had done a 2nd run of their Classic Cougar I headed to my go to Model shop and brought one home. Originally released in 1990 it was Schumachers latest 2WD weapon which did the job. Out of reach of a 12 year old back then it's great to finally get my hands on one. Will compliment my original vintage Pro Cat nicely.
