Remembering Satyajit Ray on his 102nd birth anniversary My dearest friend @shalini.passi as Ray’s Charulata 🎬🎥 Photographed by @naina Excerpts from my retrospective article on Satyajit Ray, commissioned by Elle India: “Growing up in Calcutta, I spent many languid afternoons with my grandmother listening to music by Hemanta Mukherjee on the cassette player or watching one of Satyajit Ray's classics on television. Looking back, I can profess without an iota of doubt that my love for cinema, music, costumes and design, galvanized and flourished during these simple yet impressionable childhood moments. On one such rain swept mid-summer afternoon, I distinctly remember being bewitched by the sights, sounds, costumes of Ray’s 1964 cult classic Charulata, and feeling inspired to write, read and embroider, just as Charu did in the film. I grew fascinated by her brass binoculars, her jamdani sarees, her ruffled lace blouses and intricate yet delicate gold jewellery. Over two decades later, I keep returning to this memory, and draw from it time after time, having designed multiple fashion collections inspired by the costumes and sartorial style of Amal and Charu from this epic saga. It is near impossible to point out one element that makes Charulata, Ray’s finest. The film is ablaze with marvellous examples of visual storytelling, exquisite costumes and brilliant background music, composed by the man himself; gently floating around each scene, giving them a magical, almost dream-like quality…” In this limited edition Portrait Series, we tried to recreate Charu’s iconic look on our #Muse Shalini Passi. She is wearing a custom made hazar buta Ivory Jamdani Saree with red, green, yellow and black motifs.
