Built East Pavillion Built: East was the winning design in The Belfast Flare competition run by the @royalsocietyulsterarchitects and @jpcorry_ireland in 2017. Local regeneration charity @eastsidepship acted as client and kindly agreed to host the pavilion on a site at the entrance to C.S. Lewis Square in east Belfast. Cultural identity can be a divisive issue in Belfast’s communities. It was important to find cultural common ground shared across communities. The neighbourhood has a rich industrial heritage that we wanted to celebrate. To us, the Belfast Truss represents the area’s history of manufacturing ingenuity. Many of the city’s largest factories had such a roof, including the Belfast Ropeworks which has faced the site. Each element of the structure is designed to evoke memories of the area’s industrial structures. However, it is not a nostalgic look backwards - drawing attention to emerging construction innovation in Northern Ireland. The design is an assembly of three elements, each crafted in a local factory. Traditional craft skills were combined with innovative technologies in order to create bespoke building components that could be rapidly assembled. @bigpicturejoinery worked from the architects’ models and detail drawings to produce 1:1 scale prototypes of the trusses and joints between elements using CNC in order to develop the design of each connection. The entire roof structure was assembled in the factory to test the fit of each element before being dismantled and transported to site. We set up the practice whilst working in London, but are now based in Belfast where we both also teach Architecture at Queen's University. The practice was run collaboratively during the first phase of its development whilst working through a London council. Sam Brown and Jen O' Donnell of @ODonnellBrown, Jen McKerr @jennifermckerrsmith and Donald McCrory were part of the same team, working on a wide range of education projects and public space work. Everyone in this group also teaches architecture - it was an exciting and interesting environment to begin the process of running your own practice. Since relocating to Belfast we have continued this eclectic mix of work. We won the @royalsocietyulsterarchitects Belfast Flare competition in 2017 which allowed us to work with lots of talented local manufacturers and craftspeople to create a pavilion which reinterpreted and abstracted a Belfast Truss (I will talk more about this later). The pavilion has since played host to various events including an exhibition which celebrated the stories of local people, and told the history of the east Belfast manufacturing industry and how this inspired the craftspeople who made the Pavillion. We are also completing lots of interesting public space work and residential buildings across Northern Ireland. We have particularly developed a specialism for demountable and trial public space projects, which has allowed us to work with several councils and community groups in testing and trialling urban improvements in their towns and cities. We were also recently invited by the Architecture Association of Ireland and Estonian Institute of Architecture to participate in their travelling exhibition ‘Wood Works’. OGU Architects have worked in Northern Ireland, London and North India to design projects in public spaces. Based in Belfast and run by Chris Upson and Rachel O’Grady, OGU is a core partner in the Parklet, collaborating with Belfast Buildings Trust’s @successfulbelfast, @MMAS and @qubelfast in the formation of the idea, strategy, and design. This collaboration to improve public space for people in Belfast during the pandemic channelled our creative energy into something positive. We thank everyone for the inspiring conversations and leaps of faith that have taken place as the Parklet was co-designed and delivered. OGU believe that temporary projects like the Ormeau Parklet can encourage public engagement with urban design and lead to better cities, shaped by informed decision making. Public projects don’t happen outside of the civic life of the city, but are part of it. Therefore, everyone involved in public projects should hold themselves to high standards, aiming for honest dialogue, respectful partnering and the inclusion of diverse points of view. The Parklet has been a chance to listen to differing opinions regarding Belfast’s public spaces: the listening will continue via the public questionnaires, social media and informal conversations and will inform OGU's future projects. OGU have expertise in designing temporary and demountable structures in public spaces. This also informs their teaching and research at Queen’s University Belfast. They have partnered with local manufacturers on design research, prototyping building elements that can be quickly assembled on site. Working with local manufacturers is an important part of OGU’s ethos, supporting the Northern Irish economy and reducing carbon emissions. When designing the #builteast pavilion at C.S. Lewis Square, they worked with @joelavertyphotography to document the construction and take portraits of the craftspeople involved in order to highlight the talented makers and manufacturers located in Northern Ireland.
