Staying true to our ethos, we’re taking our Porsche community to the North Side for Check24. This year, CIO is collaborating with roving car festival purveyors @gridlifeofficial, utilizing their “Car Club” hub as well as @fortknoxstudios music workspace and the surrounding city streets as canvases to paint with Porsches. Porsche’s Classic Restoration Challenge returns to Checkeditout for a third time, offering attendees the chance to vote on which classic will win Area East. These cars will be on display in @carclub.chicago, where we’ll also host a pre-Checkeditout reception Friday night, Aug. 23. Limited tickets available when registration goes live on June 3. Giving back to the city is a big part of Checkeditout. Crushers Club is dedicated to helping the young men of Englewood find their futures. Ninety percent of Crushers’ youth stay out of the juvenile justice system. Car life has taken us from @rennsportreunion in the fall to visiting two private garages on this past Saturday, each unique in their own may. The morning was for coffee and a country drive, the evening was back in a city garage with full service, meaning a cool bartender. • Checkeditout Monterey – a satellite event for the Chicago city event that we’ve grown to love over the past 6 years. @checkeditout.io Monterey was held on Friday night and the event was packed with Porsche owners from around the world! • Autograph sessions from racing legends and Porsche icons such as @hurley.haywood and @rodemory • Our local dealer Napleton @westmont_ porsche was crowned as the overall Restoration Challenge Winner for their beautifully restored 1994 911 Turbo 3.6. • Running across other Chicago Region members at every turn. This event was well attended and represented by the region. Some were camping at the track, others were in hotels and bnbs around the area. Suffice to say, we were all thoroughly exhausted on Monday morning when it was time to return home. I was more than happy to load my 911 onto a @roads.united trailer with other PCA members for an express trip home to the Midwest. If you haven’t attended a Rennsport Reunion yet, I strongly recommend adding this to your bucket list. The event doesn’t happen every year and the next one will likely be 3 to 5 years from now. This is easily the pinnacle of all Porsche events in North America. @rennsportreunion 7 would be my first Rennsport. Having joined the club in 2018, I discovered Rennsport 6 a little too late to understand its magnitude. My anticipation grew over the next 5 years to a point where my journey to Rennsport became a pilgrimage of sorts. We arrived in Monterey on Thursday night, where we stayed with several other Chicago Region members at an bnb on the beautiful 17-mile scenic drive for the remainder of the weekend. The rest of the trip became a blur: • Early morning parade laps on the scenic 2.238-mile road course at Laguna Seca, including the thrilling 5.5 story drop down the corkscrew and beautiful sweeping views of the Salinas Valley. • Racing at just about every moment. There were over 300 entrants racing vintage and modern Porsches from 356, every generation of 911, 904, 906, 908, modern prototype cars to the new Porsche GT3 R Rennsport. • Many of our Chicago Region members were racing, including Keith Clark, Dennis Hiffman, Mitch Bowling, Brian Weathered, Glenn Spiegler, Gary Knoblock, Gary Collins and John Westra. The event also marked a final run for Cheryl Lehman Collier. She now hangs up her racing career and plans to enjoy her retirement from racing. Tonight we celebrate the 6th annual Lowend Cup with our annual garage party. The Cup is our special challenge within @pca_chicago’s autocross program. Cup competition uses SSCA Pax index, open to all makes, taking the driver’s four best results. 26 drivers qualified this year, two of which carried the flag for Mazda and VW, the rest Porsche. And as you see, the ND Miata kicked everone’s ass. @gt3_lfg was a close-ish runner up having exchanged a few FTDs with two time winner Chris Dvorak. Rounding out the top five was our very own hero @reaperracing288 (in various Porsches throughout the season), Brian Dahl (982 GT4) and @adammkern (996). Say hello to ‘English Bob,’ the car that is subject in our artist collab with @jpak4ever Neil French (not Bob, nor English) bought the 1993 RS America in 2008, you read that right. In the late 90’s this RSA was converted into a racecar by the one and only @kellymossinc with a 3.8 motor by Peter Dawes with slide valve induction by Pro Technik. The suspension is part 993 and parts from Penske. The custom lightweight 993 body panels were finished in 2011. Check23 reference images provided by @mflareman of Kelly Moss. Those who guessed right will be sent their Jeff Pak stickers. If you are coming to the Swap Meet at MPC Northbrook tomorrow, we will have these stickers on hand. Saturday, we took off from Clare County, Michigan with Detroit SCCA. If we weren’t on dirt roads it’s because we were taking tarmac in order to get to a dirt road. Lots of slightly sideways fun in the improved 996. 2023 is in the rearview mirror, the holidays have long passed, and we’re all eagerly awaiting the spring thaw to resume driving our amazing Porsches. The 2023 Autocross season consisted of five events, competing at three different venues, with four events having near perfect sunny skies, and one event challenging competitors with rainy, slick conditions. Competition was fierce as class-winning times usually came down to the last run of the day and participation in all five events was required to be in contention for overall awards. The season’s top finishers were: Ladies Jenna and Elsa, with the Mens finalists: Marcin @85.5_944, Myself, Bart @bsurowka and Bill @reaperracing288 Marcin and Jenna placed first in their respective classes at all five events, a feat no other competitor was able to accomplish in 2023. Congratulations on a great season! All events are taking place at @wintrustfield in Schaumburg. This venue consistently sells out and offers the best overall experience for the price. Please come join us and test the limits of you and your car in a safe and controlled environment! In closing, I want to extend my gratitude to @adammkern for serving as the Autocross Chair over the last five years.
