Fortunately, with just an Epsom Salts bath and some extra #TLC, Mellie was able to lay a 92g egg! 🐔 Today somebody beat her #EggRecord by one gram. September 11, 2021 ~ "the best laid plans," "the road to hell is paved with good intentions," "out of the frying pan, into the fire," "no good deed goes unpunished," ~  we've all heard those sayings. 🐔 They all basically mean that something didn't quite turn out the way it was supposed to. 🐔 So here's the thing. Great lengths were taken to properly prepare a seperate coop and run for these annoying (adorable), little, four and five week old chicks we suddenly find ourselves surrounded by. 🐔 An old dog house was renovated and repurposed, a 6'Lx3'Wx3'H enclosed/elevated, predator-proof run, was built and attached to the dog house, and then the whole thing was butted up (too) close to our main run. They even got all the amenities, (observation deck, swing, foot spa, sandbox, indoor/outdoor perches, etc.). 🐔 All of these steps were taken to adhere to strict bio-security measures. [EDIT: this is NOT bio-security!! Bio-security means SEPERATE coops, FAR apart]. 🐔 And then the minute our huMom turned her back for two seconds, (ok, it was closer to five minutes, but she had to chase after a wayward hen, Mellie has been on the run a lot lately), the little 💩's ran into the main run, OUR run. ⬅️ SWIPE⬅️ SWIPE⬅️ TO MEET THE LITTLES! 🐣 September 9, 2021 ~ a common occurrence with the #ChickenMathVirus, somebody's mental health, anti-depressant medication required a dose increase. So now there's 14 of us. 🐣 We don't quite know what to think of the little #TaterTots running around and chirping non-stop next to us. 🐣 We ignore them for the most part. But sometimes we will gather around to watch the entertainment. 🐣 Here's what we know so far: 🐣 Duffus should have her picture in the dictionary beside the definition of her name because she earns it. She only has two speeds, stop and go. Which is both unfortunate and hysterical because she darts around, ALL THE TIME, like she doesn't know what to do or where to go. She is the cutest little duffus, and is quickly becoming our #huMom's favourite. 🐣 Moxie, (formerly known as Trouble), also earns her name every day. She is spunky and fearless, curious and brave, and likes to protect her sister, Princess. She will get back at you, even if you haven't done anything wrong, and even if what you did do wrong was three hours ago. She's a scrappy one we're going to have to watch out for. 🐣 Nugget seems to be the quiet but strict leader of the #LittlesCoop. She doesn't, "take no nonsense," is often putting Duffus in her place. Sometimes, just for the heck of it, she likes to remind the #LittleLittles that she's in charge. She is a bit wary of Raven, but follows #Machiavelli's adage, "keep your friends close, keep your enemies closer." 🐣 Princess is the meek, mild and nervous one of the new littles. She's sticks close to her sister, Moxie, and is often trying to snuggle up through the fence to whichever older hen is closest. We think that she's kind of afraid of her own shadow. 🐣 Raven is a still a bit of a mystery. She's like a stealthy, under cover ninja warrior. She is frequently sitting up in the observation tower, just watching. She's studying and learning and taking notes. September 6, 2021 ~ perfect for a long-overdue, #MystifiedMonday, we've got another #Conundrum on our #ChickenFeets. 🐔 Before you think us #SeniorChickizens have been neglected over the past couple of days with the arrival of the #Littles, please know that our #huMom has also been busy leveling up in the #CrazyChickenLady game. 🐔 The next level gets her committed to the #FunnyFarm. Which may sound like a fun and exciting place, (and she definitely belongs there), but we kinda need her here to dispense the mealworms! 🐔 SITUATION: one lame duck, um...chicken 🐔 DURATION: 8 days 🐔 That's it. That's all we know. Wait, we do know what it ISN'T. 🐔 It isn't Chickie, our already limping hen, (still undiagnosed, but no worse). It isn't bumblefoot. It isn't scaly leg mites. It isn't a vitamin deficiency. It isn't a visible injury. It isn't botulism (she'd be dead by now). 🐔 So what the *BAWK* is left?? 🐔 Simba, the lame duck mentioned above, limps, sometimes badly, seemingly favouring her right leg. Aside from just sitting all day, she seems to be in good enough spirits. 🐔 Her comb and wattles are still bright red, and she isn't lethargic or weak. She's holding her head up, eating, drinking, etc. And otherwise looks perfectly content to just bask in the sun. (A closer inspection of her droppings will be conducted today). 🐔 She is not laying, but she's not alone in that. September 5, 2021 ~ #FaceToFace 🐣 Once they got past the initial minute, things have been great with the #Littles. 🐣 This was the only major #Showdown, and there wasn't a clear winner. They all, "stand-up" to each other, (even amongst themselves), every so often, but it varies which one will back down first. [Except for Princess Tina. For the most part, she stays out of everyone's way, but watch out if she thinks she's cornered]. 🐣 Watch at the beginning as Moxie, "puffs-up," to Nugget. Beyond adorable! [ #FunFact: like dogs, chickens don't know their own size]. 🐣 Pay particular attention at the :09 second mark, where wee, little Moxie temporarily pins Nugget; and again around the :45 second mark, where Moxie grabs Nugget's neck and won't back down (or let go)! 🐣 So far, the pecking order appears to be: Nugget, Duffus, Moxie, Raven, and then Tina. August 26, 2021 ~Earlier this Spring, with the first cut of the season, we were reminded that the lawn tractor is like #MealsOnWheels, or what we like to call, #SnackersByTractors, or #SnacksByTracts, for short. 🐔 We L.O.V.E. hearing the lawn tractor fire up. It means that worms and grubs and crickets and grasshoppers and pre-chopped greens are about to be spewed out at us, for our dining pleasure. 🐔 We love them so much that we boldly hold our ground to get some more. 🐔 We've joked and posted previously that Simba seems to have imprinted on our #CoopDad, (whom we feel would want us to reiterate that he vehemently rejects that title). However, despite his objections, Simba loves him and he can't pick up a shovel or come near the coop without her running over to him. 🐔 She's even taken to chastising the others, even those above her in the pecking order, and will try to chase them off for getting too close to him. 🐔 If you swipe ⬅️, the second video shows Simba running after #CoopDad as he's cutting the grass. 🐔 Keep swiping, and you'll get to the third video clip, where Simba contemplates running after our next door neighbour (@julie.1373) as he is mowing his lawn. August 20, 2021 ~ did somebody say #ChickenFeederFriday?? ~ One week ago, #CoopDad (he LOVES when we call him that), constructed and installed our new #PVCChickenFeeder. We haven't posted about it until now because we're still trying to work out some kinks. 🐔 Great idea, in theory. 🐔 In practice? Not so much. It works well, (just not ideally), and we know it could be better. 🐔 MATERIALS: 4" PVC PIPE, 90⁰ PVC ELBOW, PVC SLIP END CAP, PVC CLEAN OUT W/PLUG, PVC GLUE, SOME CHAIN-like STRAP THINGY, SCREWS, #BUGSPRAY, #PATIENCE. 🐔 DIRECTIONS: we hear there's something called a #HoneyDoList and that means that our #huMom just gets her hubby to do it. 🐔 PROBLEM: the feed doesn't get all the way to the end. 🐔 We've come up with the following POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS: 🐔 1. Drill a hole closer to the elbow so we can peck the food down the line. 2. Increase the angle? It's already tipped slightly, but we're not sure how far it can go before gravity won't help anymore. 3. Instead of holes, make a trough. 4. Shorten the horizontal feeder pipe. 5. Scrap this idea and go with something else. 🐔 We figured there's bound to be some more experienced #ChickenTenders that might have some tips, tricks, hacks, ideas, and/or suggestions. 🐔 What do you use? August 19, 2021 ~ to understand today's #TherapyThursday post, a little back story would help. 🐔 In the nesting box are Hennie and Simba. 🐔 Hennie was the head hen until she abused her power, needed #PinlessPeepers, and rapidly fell to the very bottom of the ladder. Simba has maintained from day one, her position in the upper-middle of the flock. 🐔 Hennie was in the box alone at first, for about five minutes. 🐔 Simba joined Hennie, and surprisingly didn't kick her out. She did take the egg though. Which Hennie allowed, for about a minute. 🐔 Then the passive-aggressive #BattleRoyale began. July 27, 2021 ~ FINALLY!! After a whole year of having not one, but two swings hanging in our run, we actually sat on one, not once, not twice, but thrice even! 🐔 (Don't celebrate just yet). 🐔 Honey, in the first clip, had just gotten her #FowlNeck, so she was still in a bit of a daze. 🐔 The other times, it was Chickie. Chickie is blind in one eye and sometimes has a limp. 🐔 Chickie can't even get up on the roost and just this morning, she struggled to get out the hatch into the run (it now has a step for her). 🐔 So picking us up and putting us on the swing and us not jumping off right away, does not mean that we like the swing. She is shaking her head (like literally, a LOT), and is humiliated to be the chosen cover model for this post. 🐢🧦 We have gotten so many great responses and comments to our post last week, we wanted to share them. 🐢🧦 So to recap: 🐢🧦 PROBLEM: excessive feather-plucking 🐢🧦 CAUSE: (because they are there), but also from a lack protein, boredom, over crowding, or simply a learned behaviour that has become a bad habit, or all of the above 🐢🧦 SOLUTION: why oh why couldn't she have picked one of these?? 🐢🧦 There were a LOT of great suggestions! They included: 💡Rooster 💡Saddles/aprons 💡Pinless Peepers 💡Hang cabbage/lettuce 💡Plastic bottle filled with grains (treat dispenser/wiffle ball) 💡Branches/perches 💡Change the source of protein (eg: if eggs, then fish) 💡Protein/space/entertainment/free range 💡Flock Block/chick peck/suet brick 💡Vitamin C/E ~ fruits/greens 💡Pine tar 💡Black oil sunflower seeds 💡Cat food 💡Grower feed 🐢🧦 And she went with turtleneck-sock-collars, or #Fowlnecks. 🐢🧦 We don't like her very much anymore, right now, and some of us snarl at her now when she comes near. 🐢🧦 After all of those wonderful suggestions, (except for the Pinless Peepers and pine tar, we strongly object to those), our huMom did three, completely different things. 🐢🧦 She sprayed us with anti-chew dog spray, and put us in #Foulnecks (that's how it should be spelled). July 23, 2021 ~ (if you haven't, read yesterday's post first) ~ NOT FUNNY!! You guys probably knew this already, eh? 🧦 #LastResort is NOT a vacation spa retreat with, "24/7 coop service, pampering, massages, drinks by the perch, grub buffets, mud baths (wet and dry), foot rubs and pedicures." Last resort is: 🧦 #FOWLNECKSWEATERS (without the sweater part)!! 🧦 Like we said in our last post, our #FeatherPlucking was getting out of hand, and our #huMom had already tried, more or less in the following order, : 🪶 Scolding us, (go ahead and chuckle), separating us, (which just moved the plucking responsibility down the ladder), giving us extra protein, (a tricky nutritional balancing act). We were provided with entertainment (bells and whistles, literally), and #BoredomBusters, (did you see our #GrubBall??), and some of us were given  #PinlessPeepers, (ahem, Karen). We got sprayed with the hose, (we enjoyed this, and on hot days we were accused of picking fights just to get it), and we were smeared with #StopPick, (the red tar stuff that is, "supposed to" taste awful to chickens). The whistle blowing did distract us, but just for the first 3-4 times, (then we started screaming back at it), and finally, we were sprayed with anti-chew spray that you put on things you don't want your puppy to bite or chew on, which just might at least be a deterrent, (if it doesn't kill us). 🐔 If you try this with your flock, DO NOT LEAVE UNATTENDED! Also, all over the Internet people suggest using baby socks. This might work with baby chicks, but a baby sock would be too tight on a full grown chicken. July 22, 2021 ~ GUESS WHAT, GUESS WHAT, GUESS WHAT? No, Karen, (our upside down cover model), getting in trouble, AGAIN, isn't news)! We've got such an amazing announcement for this #TherapyThursday! 🐔 We're going on vacation!! Oh we are so #EGGcited (too easy? 😜). 🪶 It's been cold and hot, muggy and humid (there's a difference, #ItsACanadianThing), wet and windy, one of us was taken by a predator, and then there's the whole Covid-19 pandemic and lockdowns, etc., etc., etc. We can't wait to get there! 🪶 Maybe you've heard of it? It's a place our huMom called, " #LastResort." We're so spoiled already, we bet it's nothing short of five stars! 🪶 What do you suppose we can anticipate? We are envisioning a luxury retreat, complete with 24/7 coop service, pampering, massages, drinks by the perch, grub buffets, mud baths (wet and dry), foot rubs and pedicures, . . . oh we can't wait to #StretchOurWings! 🪶 (We heard that these resorts have cocktails too, so we hope the #ChickenDales are going to be there)!! 🪶 #FeatherPlucking solutions already tried: 🪶 ~ seperation and discipline ("go stand in the corner" translates to, "go sit under the milk crate," in #FowlLanguage) ✔️ ~ protein (eggs, mealworms, insects, grubs) ✔️ ~ entertainment (too, too much entertainment, we play soccer and hear baseball is next) ✔️ ~ Pinless Peepers (sit down Karen, you brought this on yourself) ✔️ ~ Water blasting (mostly gently, from a distance, with the garden hose, a water gun would be more portable) ✔️ ~ Stop Pick tar stuff (who doesn't like the taste of that?) ✔️ ~ anti-chew spray for training puppies (that just made us angrier than a wet hen . . . oh wait 🤔) ✔️ ~ whistle blowing (hey, we can make that sound too ~ are you kidding me??) ✔️ 🪶 So what's left?? 🪶 Stay tuned! July 20, 2021 ~ lots to chatter about for today's #ChickenChatterTuesday. 🐔 We got the cutest gift from one of #GrubDaddy's, co-workers, (he doesn't like it when we call him that, but he hates #CoopDad worse). So thanks Rob! And yay #ChickenFarmersOntario! 🐔 You're supposed to introduce new birds to your flock at night, right? 🤣 Karen had several choice words for Little Sieffo (😜) for stealing her spot. 🐔 Our #huMom has been a little reluctant to continue our soccer practice. She says it's because she knows we aren't really playing soccer, that we're actually attacking the ball. 🐔 But what does she know? She's never played soccer)! Sally is, literally, sticking her neck out to ask for advice). 🪶 [As posted to Facebook]: 🪶 July 19, 2021 ~ "Sally," (not her real name), has a question for the group. She also wanted to point out that, 🪶 1. We are a flock of nine hens. 2. We have PLENTY of room. 3. We eat lay mash and get extra protein through scrambled eggs, chick peas, and (not often enough, according to some), the occasional handful of shredded cheese. 4. Stop Pick didn't work, (and it was applied early), [EDITED TO ADD, nor did Pinless Peepers, or boredom busters]. 5. July 15, 2021 ~ we've been playing so much soccer lately that our huMom hasn't had a chance to edit the videos yet, but Honey is working on drills, so stay tuned. Here's what else we've been up to: 🐔. Mellie was one of our star soccer players, until she #Shackled her ankles together with her #VetWrap. Poor Mellie, she was L #eggbound. 🐔 It's been hot as, " #HEDoubleHockeySticks," lately. How does your flock stay cool and #BeatTheHeat? 🐔 We've run the gamut of, "cool down" treats over the past couple of weeks. Including, cold #PastaSalad, (we didn't care for the green beans though, and left them until last), chilled #TunaJuice, (we are upset that we didn't get this deliciousness earlier ~ and we'd like it warmed up in the winter, please), half-frozen pickles, (it took us a minute, but we LOVE pickles now), and completely frozen #ChickPeas (we think this is too much work and want them just cold next time. [We can't wait for blueberry season]! 🐔 And check out our new mealworm dispenser! Our huMom made it out of two sink strainers from #TheDollarTree. July 8, 2021 ~ IT'S A TIE! (surprise)! We've settled on six favorite moments/memories each. 🐔 Most of our huMom's favourites are in the highlights (she was going to cheat and pick extra ones but we said no). 🐔 Her top picks (in NO particular order, despite what Honey says) are: 🐔 1️⃣ A chicken jumping into her lap for the first time. (Ok, ok, we all know it was you Honey. Go take a bow). 2️⃣ The first time we made her laugh so hard, she cried (and maybe peed a little), and yes, Honey, everybody knows that was also you pecking her phone). 3️⃣ Move over Honey, Frankie singing the Chicken Dance song was ★彡[ᴀᴍᴀᴢɪɴɢ]彡★, and is one of her most favourite memories. 4️⃣ Mellie getting lost in the neighbours maze was absolutely hilarious, (sorry Mellie, we're with our huMom on this one ~ and we know she secretly hopes you do it again)! 🐔 There are a couple of standout moments (our huMom tried to cheat again by saying that a tie counted as one), those unforgettable moments are: 🐔 5️⃣ Penny slipping on the ice, AFTER Chickie warns her to watch her step. This STILL makes our huMom laugh hysterically. And the more she watches it, the more she laughs. 6️⃣ Then there's that day in November, when some of us troddled over and woke our teenage neighbour by knocking on his window. Our huMom didn't find out until later, (What? We weren't going to tell her after seeing what happened to Frankie and Karen!), that some of us went the other way and waited for the school bus with the kids next door! 🐔 It's fitting that today is #TherapyThursday, these (mostly) feather-covered, little raptors have done more for my mental health over the past year than any medication would. It went something along the lines of: 🐔 "There's twelve months in a year, I should pick twelve highlights." ~ huMom 🐔 "You talk too much, you should just pick your top three " ~ Common Sense 🐔 "But there are so many! I couldn't possibly just pick three!" ~ Marshmallow Heart huMom 🐔 "There are nine hens. Pick a favourite moment for each of them " ~ The Voice Of Reason 🐔 "But there WERE ten hens, and you can have ten slides on IG. July 6, 2021 ~ yesterday our post ended with the proclamation that we were, "relatively  #HappyHens." Which is totally true. 🐔 Well, except for Hennie. She is not at all happy to have recieved her #PinlessPeepers on Sunday. (Her feather plucking seems to have progressed from grooming to cannibalism lately ~ our protein has already been increased, so it's likely just a bad habit). 🐔 Karen, the only other hen to have to wear Pinless Peepers, was mostly pissed off when they were put on her and she was far more vocal about her disapproval and disdain for them. 🐔 Hennie, on the other beak, (😁), at first seemed a little more confused and wary. We'll need to make sure she can figure out how to eat, drink and perch with them on. 🐔 U͓̽P͓̽D͓̽A͓̽T͓̽E͓̽: Hennie is totally fine. She's figured out how to manage with the blinders on, AND she's maintaining her spot in the hierarchy in the coop. 🐔 Hennie is in the top-two of the pecking order, so this feather-plucking that she's been doing is unusual. July 5, 2021 ~ #Bumblefoot 🎬 2️⃣, so this went well. [Insert eye-roll emoji here ~ 🙄]. 🐔 At the end of the day, the following had occurred: 🐔 ~ one scratched arm (no stitches, rabies or tetnus shot required) ~ one thrown out back (it's on the mend) ~ one wet huMom (it was hot out anyway) ~ one back massage (for one of the ones with feathers, not the one who's back was thrown out!) ~ two slightly-angry, more-than-damp, hens ~ two sopping wet towels, ~ THREE overhead hawks 🦅 ~ one, non-bumblefooted hen, blinded by #PinlessPeepers (she's had PLENTY of warnings)! [Stay tuned]! 🐔 It was a lot! BUT . . . it was do-able! Even when I was left alone, mid-procedure, with two hens! And truly, if I can do it, #YouCanToo! 🐔 GOOD NEWS! We had moral support from our neighbour Chip, (or he was just looking for treats), we ended up with all the hens we started with, no calls were made to 911, nobody ran away or got divorced, or was scooped up by the hawks. And in the end, the only thing that got bandaged were the four chicken "feets" that were supposed to be bandaged. She thinks that gives her extra #StreetCred, but all she gets is extra #StreetCruds!! ⚽ Honey thinks this is a #NudistCoop and she has been running around here #ButtEggedNaked since last Fall. ⚽ [Said butt is sometimes really red and raw and sore-looking, so most of us, literally, #LookTheOtherWay, it's a good thing too, because there's not enough room in the doghouse #prisHENitentary for all of us if we started plucking Honey's butt]. ⚽ @HensOfMadisonMeadows supportingly commented, "wow, [you've had] one hell of a month." 🐔 It's true. Just this month alone we've had: ~ raw, red, bare butts ~ hens who won't stop bullying ~ reinstatement of Pinless Peepers ~ lame, limping chickens (not bumblefoot, that comes later in the month) ~ broody, molting hens ~ convicted #crimHENals in solitary confinement ~ #WarOfTheBirds power struggles ~ Marek's Disease showing signs in (thankfully, only) one hen ~ losing our huMom's favorite hen to a predator ~ and this last week of June brought two cases of #Bumblefoot 🐔 So yeah, it kinda feels like it's been one of those, "via a hand basket" kind of months. 🐔 BUT . . . June 30, 2021 ~ I am so thankful that my, one of #TheGoodOnes, husband, tolerates my packrat tendencies. ⚕️ It may take TEN YEARS, but eventually it pays off! ⚕️ The decade anniversary of the night I almost died and my emergency, exploratory surgery is at the end of August. ⚕️ Many of you already know that what should have been a two-hour outpatient, day-surgery leaving a one inch scar, with a two-week recovery, ended up being emergency surgery that resulted in a two week hospital stay, a two year recovery, and I have a scar that runs from the middle of my chest down to my belly button. ⚕️ What I'm REALLY thankful of today is just how well the nurses stocked me up with supplies when I left! (I mean, they were sending me home to another province with a huge, gaping wound in my chest, after all). ⚕️ You name it, they gave it. June 29, 2021 ~ somebody needs to tell Minnie that there is NOT a #WorldCoopCompetition for 1. most delayed, 2. loudest, 3. most distance travelled, 4. most prolonged, OR 5. most pronouncement locations, in regards to the #EggSong. 🐔 What you should know: 🐔 It was only recently that we figured out that we could/should shout out to the universe that we had laid our eggs. 🐔 Minnie laid her egg at least ten minutes BEFORE she starts squawking about it. 🐔 🛑Don't go away, there's more. 🐔 Another several minutes, (15-20), passed in relative silence, and then she started crowing again. 🐔 🛑 #ButWaitTheresMore 🐔 And then another whole bunch of minutes, (45), went by, and she started caterwalling AGAIN. 🐔 🛑 Nope, not done yet. 🐔 Almost TWO HOURS later, Hennie laid her egg and began her little, "I laid an egg," song and dance. 🐔 Minnie decided that was a good opportunity, to remind everyone that, "I was the first one to lay an egg this morning! I laid an egg!! And it is perfect! I laid an egg! Here rooster, rooster! (We don't have any roosters). I laid an egg! And the colour is perfect!  And I laid an egg! And the shape is perfect! I laid an egg! Watch me strut! And hey, did you hear? I laid an egg! Any predators better stay away from my baby! I laid an egg! I laid an egg!" (Or something like that, none of us are really fluent in Minnie-speak). 🐔 Keep in mind, that it wasn't two hours after Minnie laid her egg, but two hours after she laid her egg, ➕ the first 15-20 respite, ➕ the next 45 minute intermission, and then ➕ the two hours], and there was over an hour of video footage that was recorded to get the four and a half minutes shown here. June 28, 2021 ~ ok, it's time to pull up our big girl panties and get back to the land o' the livin', but we sure do miss Zelda and wanted to have a memorial post for her. 🐔 (Trust me, this is harder than you might think. In EVERY sense, these hens have truly been my #EmotionalSupportPets and losing my favourite has been heart breaking). 🐔 (It's easier to try to rhyme than relive the memories, so here goes . . .) 🐔 Zelda was with us, For less than a year. And in that short time, She was loved oh so dear. 🐔 She may have been last, To be given a name. But no other living chicken, Was ever loved the same. 🐔 Zelda's gift, of an egg a day, Was the very least of her worth. She helped my health and sanity, The best meds on all the earth. 🐔 Zelda proved, beyond a doubt, A thing about status and station. June 21, 2021 ~ on May 27, tacked onto the end of an expansion update post over on my @orcanut account, I shared a couple of pictures of the #Vermiculture farm bin I had made. 🪱 I decided to start smaller, and after a $3.00 purchase of a 3-pkg set of storage containers from the #Dollarama, a donated can of black stove paint (thanks buddy, @scootmatt), the leftover, miraculously-found window screen mesh (thanks me!), a little silicone, drill pressing and a surprise purchase of TWO (only one shown) containers of mealworms, (thanks sweetheart 💜), #EtVoila!, a mini-mealworm farm (or is it a colony, like ants?)! 🪱 I think my excitement and anticipation about trying this might have been, (just slightly), a little over-zealous. 🪱 1. I need to get over my squeamishness REAL quick, because I think I would prefer snakes, they are bigger, and you can see them if you think one might be missing and spend 15 minutes looking for it.  [In my defense, it was the lone beetle that came with the worms and it could have easily crawled out of the bin when I wasn't looking]! 🪱 2. June 21, 2021 ~ I shared this with Julie, (@DenverHomestead) over the weekend, and wanted to share here as well. (Perfect for #MystifiedMonday). Over a week ago, Julie shared in her stories, a picture of some of her favourite little dianthus flowers. 🌸 I have never seen dianthus flowers before and Forget-Me-Nots will always be my favourite-favourite flower, but these are super cute and might become a close second! 🌸 Zelda disappeared at some point between sundown on Thursday night and just after sunrise on Friday morning. 🌸 The next day, I noticed a little patch of dianthus flowers at the end of our walkway. (Do those little flowers normally just suddenly appear, full-grown)?? 🌸 We've lived here for almost 16 years. These flowers have never grown here before. 🌸 I'm choosing to believe that they are from Zelda. 🌸 There's been so much love and support that I'm overwhelmed with the outreach from everyone. 🌸 For any doubters out there about whether chickens have emotions, two of my hens have stopped laying over the last couple of days and one laid a partially soft-shelled egg today. 🌸 I'm sure they will come around. June 19, 2021 ~ I try to write this account from the perspective of my hens. This time it's just me  In total, we have had hens for about 5 years. This is the first time that we've lost one to a predator.  I do not know what happened, just that she is gone. I am extremely grateful that we only lost one and that aside from a few random feathers, there was no sign of a struggle.  I am not even ready to think, let alone talk about, how much my favourite, (because of course it had to be my favourite), little hen meant to me, but I do want to talk about predators. 🐔 What is a predator to a chicken? E. V. E. R. Y. T. H. I. N. G. 🐔 Lots of people think chickens are at the bottom of the food chain because, God bless them, they can "seem" pretty dumb. 🐔 That is a debate for another day, however, we can agree that there are some hilariously funny ways that they exhibit the limits of their intelligence. Like the one who gets a slice of bread stuck on its head or the rooster who passes out from crowing for too long. I've seen my own hens "trapped" in the wide-open run, not back down from a fight with a plastic bag, pick a fight with themselves in a mirror, AND "floof" themselves right off the perch. 🐔 However, their degree of dumbness isn't what makes chickens such each targets, it's their limitations. They have no defence mechanisms against even animals that are smaller than them, like snakes and fishers (weasels/minks). Chickens are heavy and bulky and can't fly very well. They don't have claws or fangs or size or brute force, so they are prey to virtually every other animal. 🐔 Knowing this, we made sure that our coop and run are predator-proof. We have 1/4" hardware cloth surrounding the run (chicken wire on top), there are no gaps, holes or entry points in the coop; and we not only extended the hardware cloth, but also added 18" metal sheeting at least a foot down into the ground surrounding the run AND the coop. 🐔 So how exactly did Zelda become the victim of a predator? Well, chicken-dumb is by far surpassed by people-dumb. 🐔 Continued in comments.

June 11, 2021 ~ #PYSCHOPOULTRYINCOMMOTION 5 🐔 Chickie will sometimes walk around with a limp, And she's the one whom Karen most pecks, Unfortunately it doesn't get any better for her, Beause we think she's also got Marek's, 🐔 We just read a post from back in November, About how we each earned our names. If only our huMom knew there were signs, There'd sure be a lot less to explain. 🐔 She only just noticed the tiny, pin-point, Of the pupil in Chickie's right eye. Now it finally, kind of, makes sense, But it makes her just want to cry. 🐔 A chickens left eye sees far away, But their eyes are very divergent. And seeing things up close, (like bugs), Upon her right eye is contingent. 🐔 Hawkeye, was Chickie's original name, Because she would dart around to and fro. Not really hunting and pecking so much Just taking from other hens as she'd go. 🐔 At first we thought she was just so cleaver, Saving the hard work for the others. Waiting until they all dug up some grub, Then stealing it with not a care for their druthers. 🐔 Our huMom didn't like the name she picked, It didn't seem a really good fit And when she couldn't come up with another, Caitlin said, "why not just call her the chick?" 🐔 The other hens don't know, or really seem to care, That Chickie is supposed to be a sick and injured bird. They've let her keep her middle spot within the pecking flock, Which, by chicken rules, is really quite absurd. 🐔 She's a fighter, this Chickie of ours, Limping blind won't get her down. Even sick she won't let the lower girls Steal from her, her 5th place crown. 🐔 Aside from her limp and wonky right eye, You'd never know there was something amiss. June 9, 2021 ~ we interrupt our regularly scheduled prose-gramming to bring you an update on Honey's butt. 🐔 So apparently, our humAunt is like a woodland fairy or some other forest nymph, and she told our huMom about a salve she could make out of something called a plantain weed (it's also called, "broadleaf," which is what we're going to call it so we don't get it mixed up with bananas). 🐔 Isn't it lucky for Honey that our huMom found some in the driveway? All she did was blend it with some olive oil (but if you want to make an actual salve, @fresheggsdaily has a recipe with lots of additional and beneficial ingredients). 🐔 You should probably be able to find these weeds/plants/herbs somewhere on your property. (Don't give up! Our whole yard was searched and then finally a few were found in the driveway). 🐔 Honey didn't seem to think that she was very lucky. June 8, 2021 ~ #PYSCHOPOULTRYINCOMMOTION 4 🐔 Honey-Do this and Honey-Do that, Those lists have been around for years. No, we don't need a man for these things, But it sure saves a whole lot of tears! 🐔 Trying to keep us from all being bored, Our huMom can never be beat. She knows when chickens have nothing to do, Our feathers we all start to eat. 🐔 She's practical too, 'cause we kept falling off, Our tree limb branches for sleeping, So it is really great that the neighbours old handrail, Was around all these years in safe keeping. 🐔 There's a new seat for our huMom, that folds up into the wall, And our food moved a way 'cross the floor. And beside the tree fort undid, A goat-hut will stand about 14 x 8, A bigger house, for a different kid. 🐔 Crowbars, screws, a hammer and nails, There's so much more that we will need. All goats will try to make an escape, No matter their size or the breed. 🐔 Foundation blocks, and two-by-fours, Thank God we've got more than one pallet. For constantly attacking everyone, Never learning, ALWAYS gets her caught. 🐔 Frankie stepped in on the victim's behalf, The head hen had seen enough. Karen was summarily put in her place, No longer acting quite so tough. 🐔 When the hens came for visitation, Karen's territoriality got carried away. June 4, 2021 ~ It's been C-R-A-Z-Y down here at the coop over the past, forever or so. Our huMom wrote a little (yeah right), poem to try to sum it up. 🐔 The poem got to be too long, (And we all have our theories), So we've had to break it up a bit, Into a multi-part, mini-series. 🐔 We're a very funny bunch, Though our antics are often lost. May 24, 2021 ~ (we are going through sooooooo much #CoopCommotion right now that we're resorting to using old, OLD posts because there's just no time or energy left for creative and brilliant posts) ~ oh, and we're also grabbing ideas from other accounts! 🐔 A fellow chicken account, @chicknbeauty, posted the video, ⬅️, and we then heard all about what would have been the best #MystifiedMonday post. 🐔 Our huMom"s son is now 16, but WAY back when he was only 10, this happened . . . 🐔 . . . Matthew, was frustrated that he was having problems making a paper crossbow ( #Origami). He stomped down the hall, slammed his bedroom door, came back out, grabbed an egg from the fridge, stormed out onto our back deck and threw the egg across our backyard. May 20, 2021 ~ guess who's literally and figuratively #InTheDogHouse? 🐔 Karen, sole member of the #FlockJail and #PinlessPeeper alum, has received a two week sentence in solitary confinement. 🐔 She has food, water, a dust bath and a perch and will get time in the yard by herself. May 20, 2021 ~ Earlier this week we alluded to several things that we've had to deal with over the past few days. We needed LOTS of mental and physical therapy to get to this week's #TherapyThursday) so as briefly as possible (but don't forget who wields the pen), here's a synopsis: 🐔 1. The minor medical emergency resulted from Karen's parole from the #PinlessPeepers ~ which looked fine the night they came off ~ but the next day looked like she had ripped apart her nares (nostrils) ~ she didn't, she's fine. 🐔 2. The commotion last Friday morning? Most of us had front row seats and even we don't know what that was all about. In almost a year, we've never announced our egg laying and we've never acted like that before,  but apparently our huMom and even Tag next door thought there was a fox in the hen house or something ~ there wasn't. We're all fine. 🐔 3. Part of that commotion was Minnie, our perpetual brooder, who was going through something and #OhBoy did she make her displeasure known. To the point that she loses her voice and makes our huMom think she can't breathe. (She's fine, drama queen!). 🐔 4. Whether in spite of, because of, or what prompted Minnie's barrage, our head hen, Hennie, was also putting on quite the vocal ~ and visual, display. (These are only a couple of the multitude of times she performs her little rooster act ~ were going to assume that she's fine, or will be). 🐔 5. It was the continued construction of the coop expansion that contributed to our huMom's circus acrobatics on Sunday, but she's ok, so our, Don't-Call-Me-That-CoopDad, has decided that can laugh at her. (He's not going to be fine). 🐔 It hasn't all been an ordeal though! We're a little trepidatious still, but we're slowly starting to get back into our cuddle sessions and Zelda loved listening to the kids a few doors down practice Mary Had Little Lamb on the recorder. May 18, 2021 ~ we missed #FluffyButtFriday and #SelfieSunday because somebody ~ (we won't mention any names, but it's the one with internet access) ~ tripped and fell during construction and is kinda out of commission. 🐔 🤣SQUAWK ~ she ain't no Spring chicken any more! What's that expression, "the older you are, the harder you fall and the longer it takes to mend" ~ or something like that. 🤣 🐔 We've also been dealing with some other stuff, including but not limited to: 🐔 ~ a minor, (albeit perceived), medical emergency ~ a major, (even the dog next door joined in), commotion in the coop ~ possible chicken self-asphyxiation (she's fine, she just squawked so much she lost her voice) ~ a confused chicken that thinks it's a rooster ~ continued expansion construction ~ renewed lap sitting 🐔 Oh, and Karen was granted parole from her pinless peeper blinders.
