It was formed in 1882 initially as the Plymouth Iron Windmill Company in Plymouth, MI. • In 1958 Daisy Canada launched in the old Buffalo Sled Co. factory at 336 Eagle St. in Preston but quickly expanded to 185 King St. E. beside the Speed River (former site of the Preston Furniture Co). • The corporation saw many changes throughout the next three decades and production at the plant ceased in 1991. In January 1996, the building was badly damaged by a major fire and later demolished. Preston Carnegie Library is one of 8 libraries in Waterloo Region which were founded by way of a grant from the Carnegie Foundation which dispersed donations made by Scottish-American businessman and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. (A total of 2,509 Carnegie libraries were built between 1883 and 1929.) The $12,000 grant for Preston’s library was received in 1909. Architect William Binning designed the building (as he did seven others including those in Ayr, Harriston and his hometown, Listowel). One of Preston's cherished historical anecdotes has the books moving from their old home at Oddfellows Hall to the new Carnegie via many trips in a wheelbarrow. The Carnegie library served Preston from 1910 until 1973, when a new structure was built at 435 King East. Today, the site is home to recreational fields and Kinsmen Stadium. • One of Waterloo County's best known and popular night spots, Leisure Lodge was the dream of Olaf "Olie" Waimel who designed and built the facility with the help of his brother "Hants" and their friends over 3 years. Waimel used limestone he carried from the Speed River for the foundation and fireplace. He made the tables, chairs, doors, beams and posts from wood on the property. The original building seated 280 people and opened in 1948. #50for50 – Building #6 – Kennedy’s Restaurant in St. Agatha ✳️ As the @regionofwaterloo celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2023, Doors Open Waterloo Region is sharing the stories of 50 notable buildings in the Region (many of which have been featured in past Doors Open events). 🍀An iconic eatery in Waterloo Region for nearly four decades, the family-run Kennedy’s Restaurant & Catering in St. Agatha dishes Irish charm and German fare. • Founders Mike and Linda Kennedy bought the building in 1985, when it was the abandoned Village Place Tavern. • Built circa 1860, the site was once a stagecoach stop — a place where those traveling by horse would rest during their journey. It also had a prior life as the Prince Of Wales Hotel owned by another couple — Siegfried and Elfi Geimer (who also operated the the Edelweiss Tavern in Kitchener, and the Black Forest Inn in Conestogo.) • In 2012, Mike and Linda Kennedy received the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal for outstanding service to the community. Mike passed away in late 2021. Linda and son Patrick continue to operate the restaurant and catering service. • Since its inception, Kennedy’s has been home to a massive annual St. Patrick’s Day celebration. #50for50 – Building #1 ✳️ As the @regionofwaterloo celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2023, Doors Open Waterloo Region is sharing the stories of 50 notable buildings in the Region (many of which have been featured in past Doors Open events). • Nestled on 5 acres dotted with tall evergreens near what is now Downtown Kitchener, the First Mennonite Church & Cemetery is the final resting ground of some of the Region’s most prominent pioneers. • The cemetery offers a glimpse into the lives of the Mennonite settlers who travelled by Conestoga wagon from Pennsylvania to start new lives in Canada. • The first church was built of logs in 1813 and the cemetery was formally established three years later. • The building was replaced twice, in 1834 and in 1902. The 1902 building remains the center section of the present day church. The building became known as First Mennonite Church in 1917. • The cemetery includes the grave of Abraham Erb, generally considered the founder of Waterloo where he purchased 900 acres of bush and settled in 1806. • Other graveyard inhabitants include Joseph Schneider, whose house on Queen Street is now a museum, and Rev. Joseph Cramer, who founded the House of Friendship. • Here too is Bishop Benjamin Eby who founded the First Mennonite Church. Episode #1 is River Monsters Of Waterloo Region which explores the Nith River Monster and the lesser-known ‘Doon Sea Serpent’. • While Nithy is a bit of a celebrity ‘round these parts since he surfaced in 1953, the lore of the Doon monster of 1857 is much more obscure. • A chance sighting last winter of a post on the Instagram account of @homerwatsonhouse inspired us to pursue this episode. Doppelgänger? Twin? Prank? Same fella appears twice in this photo?! • One of the many treasures we found while filming our upcoming episode of Digital Doors Open about the Grace Schmidt Room of Local History at the @kitchenerlibrary • This group photo from the 1951 K-W Real Estate Board Picnic shows the same man on the far left and far right. • How? • The camera panned from left to right in order to capture an extremely long panorama of the entire group in one frame. It worked a bit like the panorama features on modern smartphones: start the exposure on one side of the frame, and then gradually sweep the camera across the scene while everyone in the frame stays as still as possible. • Taking advantage of the way the camera worked, pranksters stood still on one end of the group for the beginning of the exposure, and then hurried over to the other end while the camera was being panned. • Voila!
