🏁 Standard Class Nationals / Day 3: Yesterday the weather cleared just enough for the contestant field to just get a racing task in. I had a killer fun flight, mostly surrounded by friends in a buoyant albeit low-ish sky. I landed to a mostly empty runway, then realized I super stepped in it and had programmed my task incorrectly into my nav system, missing the last turnpoint. 💀 Yesterday’s overall short day meant scoring was devalued for both classes, so at least my absentminded f-up didn’t do as much damage as it could have. Region 5 North in Perry, SC is soaring’s racing season opener. It’s an oversized gathering of competitors that gather in the fickle conditions of a Southern spring, as much for friendship as for flying- a collective shedding of the winter cobwebs. I first flew at Perry in 2006? where I stayed in a cheap tent with my first dog and flew a graciously-loaned glider @knmplanepatch. It was so cold the shower floor had frozen over into a thick sheet of ice but somehow the hosts and competitors colluded to find me a camper to stay in with a small space heater to tuck into a corner. I flew out here again early in my Army career- maybe 2012- this time with my own glider which went unsealed and apparently without a functioning total energy system until we sold it last year. I’m pretty sure I landed out every day and barely finished any tasks but remember cool camp mornings and sweet potato pancakes with friends in the South cove @skysailinginc. After a few tough professional and pandemic years, it was pretty easy to convince ourselves to make the 2,500 mile drive this year. When we arrived, the big dogwood had finished blooming and cold temps early in the week faded into hints of an imminent early summer. Over five days, nineteen flight hours, and over 650 engineless miles flown, I flung this gorgeous piece of fiberglass around a temperamentally buoyant sky, laughed with my contest favorite @kevinsoar92, watched @jmcmasterjr enjoy a beautiful new sailplane, met sweet ray of light @olivetate.11, had teatime and soul space with my winged garden muse @chilhowee, and began to see the manifestations of big life moves with my greatest handler and fan @t28_solo. A mind at peace meant a (somewhat uncharacteristically) consistent race for me, one without any spectacular wins or losses, ending in a comfortable creep into an overall third place finish. I’ve been holding my breath awhile. The passage of time hasn’t felt like discrete events- places, or days, or years- but rather it’s been a collectively prolonged burning in my chest. It’s been a bated waiting, a gasp held a moment too long, a silence delayed to the slightest verge of awkward. I woke up this morning, wondering why everyone’s new year posts were coming so early- I’ve been simultaneously a day behind and a day late, and for much longer than just today. But the pause, and its cracks, have been an introspective comfort rather than any sort of undoing. If I could point to three things that alight my soul- it would be Hugh, racing gliders, and taking a motorcycle down a long desert road. As my time in the Army tapers, I’ve been grateful to be able to fill my life again with my beloved, formerly-castaway past times. Over the last twelve plus years, I’d be lucky if I could race once a year and I hung onto my glider proficiency and my friendships in the community by the very last ends of my fingertips. I’d be lying if I said that more than once, I considered selling my neglected glider and just letting it all go- the expense, the stress, the jealousy towards my former self, the resentment towards my current and future self. So Hugh and I began a little bit of a professional undoing. Decided to leave the job. Fill the schedule with racing. Ride a Himalayan across Alaska... 🤍
