As much as we hate admitting defeat, we are very concerned about the potential for unpleasant and even unsafe weather this weekend. We've made the decision to postpone Geekend until Saturday, June 1, where we will combine with The Majestic Kids Fest to celebrate together. We've been monitoring four different weather forecasts, and while they do not agree on how much and what part of the day, all seem to be predicting rain, thunderstorms, possible flooding, and high winds, which will be very problematic with canopies, costumes and electrical equipment. However, since Saturday will still be Star Wars Day, we will still be hosting our Cookies with Chewie activity, at both Geektopia and Zen Kitchen during the day. We would like to introduce an old friend and amazing artist, Mitchell Studios! Born a long time ago in the swamps of Louisiana to a military family, Brett Mitchell spent his childhood travelling from base to base and reading comic books. He always dreamed about being a comic book artist, but, as with many people, life got in the way. He took art in high school and a few night classes at a junior college. He attended his first comic book convention in 1981, and did a little drawing and painting from time to time. Thirty years later, in 2011, he went to his second comic con, and decided to really start an art career. Starting off as a 10-year-old tracing comics, Brett now does original art with pen, pencil, watercolor, acrylics, fabric paint, and spray paint on a variety of mediums: paper, clothing, poster board, wood, glass, and canvases...even musical instruments! Using both regular and fluorescent "black light" paint to unique effect, Brett is now living his artistic dream from event to event, piece by piece. His daughter Julia has followed in his artistic footsteps, and also creates for Mitchell Studios. You can normally catch Brett at events nearly every weekend, covering East Texas, DFW, Houston, and the Ark-La-Tex, as well as scope out his work at Geektopia in downtown Kilgore. Brett is also the owner of Tyler Comic Con, which debuted November 2019 and made a post-COVID return in October 2021. We are very proud to include Edward "Eddie" Hancock II in our Geek fam, and glad he will be joining us again for Geekend! Award-winning author Edward Hancock II wrote his first story at the age of 9, and he's been hooked on words ever since. Set in East Texas, his Mendez series is a thrilling crime drama with both heartwrenching and heartwarming moments, a roller coaster of despair and hope that will leave you a different person than when you started. The characters are relatable and will remind you of your neighbors, family, and friends. In addition to the Mendez Series, Edward has penned a Young Adult novel, Sutter's Cave, available through Amazon, and Letters From Home, a non-fiction piece based on his grandfather's letters home during WWII. Bill Necessary is a veteran of cosplay. In fact, he is such the veteran of cosplay, that he was a cosplayer before cosplay was a thing and even has his own action figure! He has been dressing as characters ranging from Daniel Boone to Superman for over 25 years! He currently cosplays over 30 different characters, many with multiple variations in costume. From Captain Kirk to Captain America, Bill covers it all, including lesser-known or not-often-cosplayed characters, such as the Green Hornet, the Lone Ranger, and the Phantom. Not only does he wear a super suit, but he has a super heart as well, and often uses his costuming and cosplay skills in charity work and working with children. Bill will be roaming the walkways at Kilgore Geekend, so be sure to stop and grab a photo with him, as it is one of his favorite things. Wild Rose Tribal: "Wild Rose Tribal is an eclectic dance troop that focuses primarily on Improvisational dance and folkloric styles. We have ladies that have been dancing with us for several years to just a few months. Our goal is to encourage a positive self image and to have a good time." The Twilight Troupe: "The Twilight Troupe is located outside the Athens and Tyler area, in Murchison, Texas. Leader Eli has been teaching Egyptian Belly Dance for about ten years. The Troupe enjoys various performances and styles from traditional Egyptian to fusion, the Halloween Wolfshager Hexenbrut ("aka "German Witch Dance") to Celtic inspired-dances, and even the recently-popular "Wednesday Addams dance."
