. Dragon Year wines retrospective (Part 3 of 4)… . 1988 Domaine de Chevalier Rouge Pessac-Léognan Grand Cru Classé de Graves . My third Dragon Year wine was a 36yo claret by Domaine de Chevalier - considered by Parker as one of the top wines of the vintage. The colour was surprisingly youthful - beautiful dark ruby with no bricking at all. Fruit had faded somewhat with scents of violet, blackberry, kirsch, truffles, tobacco, coffee ground and graphite. With more swirling and aeration it released more gamey and ferrous notes but still utterly clean. Tannins was silky and refined showing more elegance than muscle. I’d say this ‘88 had fully resolved and evolved - it’s delightful to drink now but probably no upside to further ageing.
