On Thursday, Hungary and China signed new agreements to deepen economic and cultural ties during President Xi Jinping’s visit, aiming to strengthen China’s presence in Central Europe. Prime Minister Orbán praised the long-standing friendship between the two countries and pledged to continue facilitating Chinese investments while fostering cooperation between Western and Eastern technologies in Hungary. China sees Hungary as a key entry point into the European Union, with significant investments in various sectors, including EV production and railway infrastructure. Hungary aims to become a hub for lithium-ion battery manufacturing and is engaged in projects like the railway connection with Greece’s Piraeus port under the Belt and Road Initiative. Xi emphasized the alignment between Hungary’s eastward opening strategy and the Belt and Road Initiative. The two leaders concluded a strategic partnership agreement and signed 18 other agreements and memoranda of understanding. Although no major investments were announced, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said that initial discussions had begun on China developing a freight railway bypass of Budapest and a rail link between the capital and Budapest Ferihegy airport. Orbán noted during the news conference that three-quarters of investments in Hungary last year came from China, and spoke of Beijing’s role in the world’s shifting balance of power. He expressed interest in expanding economic cooperation with China to the field of nuclear energy.
