Given the absurdly penal nature of the other par threes on the course, it's a credit to Tom Fazio that he designed what equates to a breather on the short seventh at Victoria National Golf Club in Newburgh, Indiana. The former trio all require a carry over water and extend well beyond 200 yards from their respective back tees, allowing the 183-yard seventh - shown here in far less visually striking fashion than the fabulous shots recently shared by @ryanmontgomeryphotography - to provide a stark contrast simply by not doing so. Instead, it is tucked in a small hollow between piles of mining spoils, its long, narrow green complex perched atop a rippling saddle-like landform with high points in the left center and right rear. Most of the green is lined on its left by a long, narrow bunker which becomes progressively nastier and deeper the farther into it one gets; a recovery to any hole location on the left half of the green is nearly an impossible ask from the back corner of that bunker. The bunker, however, is a bargain compared to the funky stances one might be required to take attempting a recovery from numerous other unfortunate positions around this green's perimeter. Woodland Country Club is often overshadowed by another Carmel, IN course, but rightly deserves its own portion of the spotlight. This Pete Dye layout is on property originally owned by another Indiana Golf Hall of Famer, William “Bill” Diddle. The front nine routing is laid out on relatively flat-ish land. The back nine is where you’ll start to see some great land movement! The 9th and 18th holes mirror each other with a lake separating the two and creating a testy hazard. With a handicap index hovering in the mid-single digits these days - up a few strokes from years past - it's hard to maintain any delusions about scoring. While it's a nice treat on occasion to go low, I certainly don't expect it anymore - and certainly not on a golf course renowned for its difficulty. However, there is one quantifiable scoring statistic on which I focus heavily: I absolutely abhor double bogeys, no matter how unavoidable they may be. Not all doubles are created equal; the six following a stroke-and-distance on a par four's tee shot may feel far better immediately afterward than one resulting from a missed green and a sloppy three-putt. Yet on the scorecard and in the statistical record they are the same, frustrating warts that remain no matter how hard we try to eliminate them. Following my morning loop at Victoria National Golf Club in Newburgh, Indiana, I had one goal for my second time around: atone for my previous sin on any hole where I made double or worse earlier. There were three such examples, all of which were par fours oriented against that day's stiff breeze: the sixth, seventeenth, and eighteenth. In each case, I made sure to play as conservatively as possible, resulting in safe bogeys - until the eighteenth, when a slightly ballooned three-wood off the tee found the water lining the right side and a desperate attempt to clear it on the third shot did so as well. After I holed out for an eight, my host (who knew my goal) graciously suggested I try one more time - leading to the "extra" hole I cited last week in a weekend total of sixty-four rather than sixty-three. If there's a comparable venue to Victoria National within the Hoosier State when it comes to setting, it would almost have to be Rock Hollow Golf Club in the north central Indiana town of Peru. From a landscape perspective, the pair of pockmarked brownfield sites have a lot in common; while the latter was built out of a gravel quarry rather than a coal mine, the signs of mankind's industrial influence on the property are everywhere. Sharing several photos over the weekend perhaps coincidentally brought forth comments from multiple observers about that commonality, but the ever-entertaining @bethpageblackmetal perhaps said it best: "Victoria National looks like that last long par four at Rock Hollow, but eighteen holes of it." Presumably he meant Tim Liddy's extremely difficult eighteenth, shown here, playing 427 yards around a large lake via a strip of fairway that feels remarkably tiny when standing on the tee; thankfully, despite the illusory effect of the gentle dogleg, there is a decent amount of width as the narrowest point is still roughly 30 yards across. In one sense, Mr. Book's statement is hyperbole - not every hole at Victoria National is brutishly difficult, after all - but in another it is accurately descriptive of the setting; the lake along Rock Hollow's closing hole represents a pit on the property's low point from which gravel and sand were extracted over the years. When a golf course is built alongside a man-made feature for another use, such as this lake, is the specific nature of that use - i.e., what material was being dug out of the ground - important? Looking back on an absolute whirlwind of a weekend involving 63 holes of golf (well, 64 actually, as I'll eventually explain) over the span of less than 43 hours, I'm feeling less reflective and more exhausted today - yet another strangely conflicting sentiment has me feeling energized by the thrill of having experienced a pair of world-class golfing venues. I've never seen anything quite like the setting of Victoria National Golf Club in Newburgh, Indiana, routed across the rumpled landscape of a former strip mining operation; it is actually through that operation that the club has a historical connection to St. Louis which is similarly energizing. The old Victoria strip mines were owned by Peabody Coal, a company based in the St. Louis area since the 1950s - right around when the mine began extracting coal from the ground. By the time developer Terry Friedman and architect Tom Fazio got their hands on the property in the 1990s, however, mining activity had long been dormant due to a plunge in coal prices, allowing erosion and overgrowth to naturally stabilize what had been a very unnatural environment. The combination of these factors has resulted in a landscape so severe it resembles a surrealist painting; steep slopes seem to rise or fall at random from the edges of playing surfaces yet still tie in nicely. One of the best examples of this phenomenon is seen very early in the routing with the 374-yard par four second, shown here from its tee. A favorite of @elevation_golfing_nation, who played here just days before I did, the second gives the impression of width on the right side of the fairway, but provides a far superior angle and shorter approach to those who challenge the left edge - a wonderful strategic hole. #todaysround #itsamonster Growing up, I eschewed the clichéd teenage boy stereotype of having posters of cars or swimsuit models on my bedroom walls. Instead - shockingly, I know - those walls held photos of golf courses. Most notably in my memories, every year at Christmas, my parents would get me a calendar for the following year full of golf photography from around the world; sometimes it was the @usga one highlighting host venues for that year's events, but other years it was a more generic one. At one point when I was in high school, I got a calendar with a photo of a wild-looking par three whose green was stuck out on a tiny peninsula in the midst of some strangely shaped lakes; it was an enthralling sight, looking almost like something out of a Bud Chapman work - but it was very real, and not all that far from St. Louis. Thus began my lifelong infatuation with Victoria National Golf Club in Newburgh, Indiana and its unique routing woven between deep, water-filled strip mining pits and their accompanying mountains of spoils. The hole in question which became the catalyst of this infatuation is the fifth, shown here, extending to 212 yards; it is Tom Fazio's 1990s penal maximalism to the extreme, offering players the simple, raw thrill of an extremely demanding golf shot. Today's spectacular thirty-six hole day couldn't have come together without the tight-knit St. Louis area @golfersjournal Broken Tee Society crew, one of whom is a @dormienetwork member and generously offered to host a small group of us - even going so far as to introduce me to Carson, the manager of the club's in-house social media @victorianationalinsider. I didn't grow up on a golf course; the closest thing I had to a "home" course as a kid was Normandie, where I went to play often with my father and which among rounds I have documented remains by a wide margin the St. Louis area course I've played the most. Nonetheless, I never had an attachment to any golf course that was more than just sentimental. It's thus hard for me to comprehend the emotional connection one can have to a golf course that was actually home - like Meshingomesia Country Club in Marion, Indiana was to the Gallagher family. Meshingomesia, which announced the closure of its golf course around this time last year, saw three successful professional golfers raised under the same roof with the club as their literal front yard. The Gallagher household, run by head professional Jim Sr., was situated across the entrance drive from the club's third fairway, but that was not their first home on the course; the man affectionately known as Pro's original house was located near what became the ninth tee, where a young @gallagherjr buried soup cans to create a makeshift course in the yard. The ninth, the shortest of Meshingomesia's four par fives at 520 yards, was a roller-coaster ride down into and up out of the valley full of lumps shown here, over and/or around the large tree in the center of the fairway which @turnerk17 loved so dearly. Its green, one of the larger ones on the course, was situated atop a knob falling off to the right and behind; it provided an imposing view of the sprawling, historic clubhouse and the modest Gallagher family home across the driveway. March 25th, 2000 was a seminal day in my sports fandom. The Purdue men's basketball team, led by my all-time favorite Boilermaker @briancardinal, battled down to the wire that evening in a classic Big Ten slugfest against Wisconsin, the fourth time that season the two teams had met - and the third time the Badgers came out victorious, ultimately earning them a spot in the Final Four. That season's Final Four was being played just down the road from Purdue in Indianapolis; as a wide-eyed freshman, the idea of attempting to secure a ticket to a game at the old Hoosier Dome most certainly crossed my mind as the Boilers took the lead in the second half, but it was not meant to be. No matter, I told myself: there will certainly be other chances. Life went on; it was a warm spring weekend in West Lafayette, Indiana, so I spent the next day wandering my beloved Ackerman Hills Course at Purdue's Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex - even birdieing one of my nemesis holes, the terrifyingly narrow par three seventeenth, shown here from behind its green. To paraphrase Ron Howard narrating @arresteddevelopment, there were most definitely not other chances. Nearly two decades went by at Purdue without even so much as another regional final appearance; then, heartbreak in the form of an overtime loss to Virginia in 2019. I admit losing faith at that point, thinking a trip to the Final Four may never happen in my lifetime, and the disasters that followed turned me into the hardest of cynics. This glorious Easter Sunday in Detroit, however, has seen the dawn of a new era. On the extraordinarily tall shoulders of @zach_edey, the Boilermakers bent against Tennessee but did not yield. Nearly two decades ago, a pair of golf architecture scions in the Hoosier State came together to produce a golf course that offers a bit more historical provenance than the standard higher-end public facility. The Fort Golf Resort in Lawrence, Indiana was built across the ridges and valleys of the former Fort Benjamin Harrison, a sprawling United States Army installation dating back to the turn of the twentieth century; the fort always had a golf course - expanding from nine holes to eighteen in the early 1970s - but Pete Dye and Tim Liddy essentially built a new one from scratch in the mid-1990s following the BRAC-driven conversion of the fort to a state park, using both the wide-open spaces of the original nine and wooded corridors old and new. One of the latter is found on the fantastic little tenth, a drivable par four over rolling terrain with a small ravine in front of its well-guarded green. At 311 yards from the back edge of the back tee, it is very tempting to take on the green, but as evidenced here it is a very risky proposition. The tenth kicks off an inward side that makes its way through the aforementioned woods and hillier terrain, a wild ride highlighted by a pair of truly awesome par fives and an epic finishing hole - certainly the better of the two nines at The Fort, the crown jewel of the Indianapolis area's Fort Harrison State Park. The color changes depending on the direction you look at it and the direction in which the light hits it.
