Ashwin Ramaswami, the first Gen Z Indian-American running for a US State legislature, has raised over USD 280,000, which is considered to be a substantial figure at the state level. Ramaswami, 24, has outraised his incumbent opponent Shawn Still by 22 times in the latest filing period from Feb 1 to April 30. While Ramaswami raised over USD 146,000, his opponent raised only USD 6,400. The two are running for the State Senate in the District 48 of Georgia. According to the latest public campaign finance report, Ramaswami has raised a total of over USD 280,000 and has USD 208,000 cash on hand, his campaign said. “Our latest reports are further evidence that our community values honesty and integrity in our leadership above all,” said Ramaswami, a second-generation Indian-American who has built a career in software engineering, election security, and technology law and policy research. “We've built a grassroots campaign with unprecedented momentum to ensure we elect a leader who will serve our communities first and foremost: funding our schools, supporting our small businesses, preparing us for the technology of the future, and protecting the right to vote,” he said. “Our community will never forget Shawn Still's utter lack of leadership and integrity when he tried to overturn Georgians' votes in 2020,” said Ramaswami. “Experience matters significantly, and it's clear that Shawn Still has the wrong kind of experience,” he said. The young Indian-American's campaign has also been endorsed by Congresswoman Lucy McBath of Georgia's seventh Congressional district. “I am endorsing Ashwin Ramaswami's historic bid for District 48 because he has the vision and experience to fight for Georgians in the state legislature. This seat is the most competitive in the Georgia Senate, making it the top pickup opportunity for Georgia Democrats,” said Congresswoman McBath. #AshwinRamaswami #UnitedStates #GenZ #TimesNow #TimesNowNews #InstaWithTimesNow

Chairman of Indian Overseas Congress Sam Pitroda sparked a new controversy speaking on the diversity of India referring to how people in the "South look like Africans" and those in the "East look like Chinese." This statement by Sam Pitroda comes days after he ignited the 'inheritance tax' controversy. Speaking about how India is a shining example of democracy in the world, Pitroda said that the people of the country have "survived 75 years in a very happy environment where people could live together leaving a few fights here and there". Pitroda, in an interview, while refelecting upon the democracy in India said, "We have survived 75 years in a very happy environment where people could live together, leaving aside few fights here and there. We could hold a country together as diverse as India, where people on east look like Chinese, people on West look like Arab, people on North look like white and maybe people on South look like Africans." He further added that the people of India respect different languages, religion, food and customs which varies from region to region. "That's the India that I believe in, where everybody has a place and everybody compromises little bit," he said. Earlier, Pitroda stoked a controversy while speaking about the concept of inheritance tax prevailing in America and said these are issued that will need to be discussed. "In America, there is an inheritance tax. If one has 100 million USD worth of wealth and when he dies he can only transfer 45 per cent to his children, 55 per cent is grabbed by the government. That's an interesting law. It says you in your generation, made wealth and you are leaving now, you must leave your wealth for the public, not all of it, half of it, which to me sounds fair," Pitroda had said. #SamPitroda #RacistComment #TimesNow #TimesNowNews #InstaWithTimesNow

The spices in your kitchen might not be as authentic as you believe. Delhi Police recently made a significant seizure of 15 tonnes of spurious spices from two factories located in northeast Delhi’s Karawal Nagar area. As per the media report, the operation resulted in the arrest of three individuals, including the owners of these processing units, identified as Dilip Singh (46) and Sarfaraj (32). Along with them, Khurseed Malik (42) was also apprehended. These suspects were allegedly supplying the adulterated spices to local markets and vendors across Delhi/NCR, selling them at the same price as genuine products. Rakesh Paweriya, DCP (crime branch), disclosed that the seized items comprised a disturbing array of substances, including rotten leaves, spoilt millets, wood dust, chili heads, as well as acids and oils utilised in the production of counterfeit products. Additionally, DCP Paweriya stated that the police had received information regarding the engagement of specific manufacturers and shopkeepers in northeast Delhi in the production and distribution of adulterated spices under different brand names. In response to this information, a dedicated team was assembled, leading to raids conducted on May 1. During the operation, Singh was discovered operating one of the processing units. Here, he was found manufacturing adulterated turmeric using non-edible and banned substances, including spoilt leaves, rice, millets, wood dust, chili heads, acids, and oils, as confirmed by the DCP. Subsequent investigations unveiled another processing unit situated on Kali Khata Road in Karawal Nagar, where Sarfaraj was found engaged in the production of counterfeit spices, as confirmed by the DCP. The Department of Food & Safety was notified and conducted inspections, gathering samples of the confiscated adulterated spices from both factories. Subsequently, a case was registered under pertinent sections of the law, leading to the arrest of all three accused individuals, as stated by DCP Paweriya. #Spices #Delhi #DelhiPolice #TimesNow #TimesNowNews #InstaWithTimesNow

Deepfake technology, driven by advancements in Artificial Intelligence, has gained momentum for its ability to produce highly realistic, manipulated videos. Lately, deepfakes have been increasingly employed on social media platforms, often with malicious intent. From swapping faces in celebrity videos to creating fabricated political speeches, deepfakes have been used to spread misinformation and sow discord. The rise of deepfake content underscores the urgent need for robust detection mechanisms and heightened awareness among users to combat the proliferation of false narratives in the digital age. Just over a week ago, actress Wamiqa Gabbi shared a video on her Instagram account. However, the emergence of a manipulated, deep fake video has stirred controversy, replacing Gabbi's face with that of Bollywood actress Alia Bhatt. The widespread circulation of the viral video has sparked discussion on various social media platforms, leading to an array of users expressing scepticism about its credibility. Netizens pointed out the unmistakable signs of manipulation evident within the video, emphasising the potential risks associated with the increasing prevalence of deep fake technology in contemporary digital environments. In the video, the actress is depicted wearing a red saree and sporting a braided hairdo, seated on the floor. A user shared the video on Instagram with the caption, "Alia Bhatt off screen." This led to various reactions in the comment section. A user asked, “Which app?” Someone else wrote, “Is this legal?? U r using alia's face.” Clarifying that it is actually Wamiqa Gabbi's video, a user mentioned, "This is the actual video of Wamiqa Gabbi. They replaced it with Alia's face using AI." In what might come as a huge shock for MS Dhoni and Chennai Super Kings fans, it is a leg muscle tear which is forcing the former India captain to bat down the order. According to a media report, not choosing to come up the order is more of a compulsion for him, Chennai sources say the former skipper is playing IPL 2024 with a muscle tear in his leg. The tear happened a bit too early in IPL 2024 and had Chennai's second wicketkeeper-batter Devon Conway been available, Dhoni might have thought of taking a break. But with the former ruled out as well, Dhoni did not have a lot of options. Such is the situation that Dhoni has to play through pain, take his medicines and try to minimise his running. As for him, he has been smashing sixes in the death overs in IPL 2024 for a strike rate of 224.49, although his last outing against PBKS ended with a golden duck. Dhoni has been suggested rest by doctors but the wicketkeeper-batter does not have a choice because Chennai has already been hurt by a number of injuries. "We are virtually playing with our ‘B' team. Those who are criticising Dhoni do not know the sacrifice he is doing for this team," a source close to the developments told a media portal. Dhoni had played IPL 2023 with a knee injury that had to be operated on just after Chennai won the season. Reports suggested the knee was healed but the muscle tear has restricted his movement on the field. During practice sessions, Dhoni isn't doing any running at all and his full preparation is around smacking big sixes. Some running between the wickets that Dhoni has been forced to do during his cameos is just worsening the injury, but he wouldn't take a break. Dhoni has been a mentor and a guide for new skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad, who has done well but Chennai have often been found in a spot of bother. "He is giving his best and we believe we will go much beyond just making the playoffs," the source told a media portal. CSK play their next match against the Gujarat Titans on May 10 in Ahmedabad and will look to continue their winning momentum. #MSDhoni #CSK #News #TimesNow #TimesNowNews #InstaWIthTimesNow

Days after admitting that its coronavirus vaccine can cause 'rare side effects', AstraZeneca said that it is withdrawing Covid-19 vaccine. The company said that the decision was taken due to a "surplus of available updated vaccines" since the pandemic. The company also said it would proceed to withdraw the vaccine Vaxzevria's marketing authorizations within Europe. "As multiple, variant COVID-19 vaccines have since been developed there is a surplus of available updated vaccines," AstraZeneca said, adding that this had led to a decline in demand for Vaxzevria, which is no longer being manufactured or supplied. According to a media report added that AstraZeneca's application to withdraw the Vaxzervria vaccine was made on March 5 and came into effect on May 7. The Anglo-Swedish drugmaker had previously admitted in court documents that the vaccine can cause Thrombosis Thrombocytopenia Syndrome (TTS) - a rare syndrome characterized by blood clots (thrombosis) and low platelet counts (thrombocytopenia). London-listed AstraZeneca began moving into respiratory syncytial virus vaccines and obesity drugs through several deals last year after a slowdown in growth as Covid-19 medicine sales declined. The admission sparked massive outrage and concern. In response, the company said, “Our sympathy goes out to anyone who has lost loved ones or reported health problems. Patient safety is our highest priority, and regulatory authorities have clear and stringent standards to ensure the safe use of all medicines, including vaccines." Indian-origin astronaut Sunita Williams' highly anticipated third mission to space was abruptly called off just hours before liftoff, owing to a critical technical malfunction. The unforeseen setback, attributed to a "technical glitch," occurred 90 minutes before the liftoff, compelling mission controllers to abort the launch. So far no new date has been announced for the launch. The US space agency NASA cited an off-nominal condition on an oxygen relief valve as the reason behind the postponement, highlighting the paramount importance of ensuring optimal conditions for a safe and successful mission. Consequently, both Sunita Williams and NASA's Barry Wilmore, who were poised to pilot the Starliner spacecraft to the International Space Station, were required to exit the Starliner crew module. This mission held significant promise for Williams, who would have made history as the first woman to fly on a maiden crewed mission of a new space shuttle. With an impressive spacefaring record, including 322 days spent in space and a record for the maximum hours of spacewalk by a woman, Williams stood poised to further solidify her legacy in space exploration. Williams embarked on her inaugural space voyage on December 9, 2006, setting a world record for women by undertaking four spacewalks totalling 29 hours and 17 minutes during her tenure aboard. Her subsequent voyage occurred from July 14 to November 18 in 2012, further cementing her status as a pioneering figure in space exploration. Despite the delay, Williams remained undeterred, expressing confidence in the safety and reliability of the Starliner spacecraft. Notably, she played an instrumental role in the design process of the Starliner, collaborating closely with engineers from NASA and Boeing. Ahead of the anticipated flight, Williams revealed her intention to carry an idol of Lord Ganesh, her "good luck charm," on the journey, alongside a copy of the Bhagwad Gita. Known for her passion for physical fitness, Williams has even completed a triathlon in space, underscoring her resilience and determination in the face of challenges. #SunitaWilliams #NASA #TimesNow #InstaWithTimesNow

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has dismissed the claims that it has permitted high pesticide residue in Indian herbs and spices terming media reports as "false and malicious". This came as a reaction to reports claiming that FSSAI allows 10 times more pesticide residue in herbs and spices. "It is clarified that India has one of the most stringent standards of Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs) in the world and MRLs of pesticides are fixed differently for different food commodities based on their risk assessments," a statement from the FSSAI read. In the statement, the panel also said it regulates pesticides rigorously to safeguard public health. A huge controversy began after the Center for Food Safety in Hong Kong banned India's MDH and Everest spice products due to high levels of ethylene oxide - a pesticide, last month. What is ethylene oxide and its harmful side effects? Ethylene oxide is a colourless gas, used as a pesticide and sterilizing agent. Exposure to ethylene oxide causes lymphoma and leukemia among other cancers. According to doctors, acute exposure to the gas also results in respiratory irritation and lung injury, headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, breathlessness, and cyanosis. A few side effects of ethylene oxide, if inhaled include: Fluid in the lungs causes lung collapse Coma Cardiovascular collapse Respiratory paralysis Diarrhoea Breathlessness Drowsiness Exhaustion Eye burns Frostbite Headache Experts say ethylene oxide destroys DNA and can increase the risk of certain cancers. Studies show that long-term exposure to ethylene oxide can cause cancers of: White blood cells in humans, including non-Hodgkin lymphoma, myeloma, and lymphocytic leukemia Increase in the risk of breast cancer in women Brain cancer Lung cancer Connective tissue and uterine tumours #FSSAI #IndianSpices #Pesticide #News #TimesNow #TimesNowNews #InstaWithTimesNow

Amid the ongoing investigation into the murder of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, Foreign Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has levelled accusations against Canada, alleging that the country is permitting organised crime from India, particularly from Punjab, to prosper within its borders. Regarding the arrest of Indian nationals in connection with the Nijjar murder probe, Jaishankar responded, "We'll have to wait for the police to tell us." Jaishankar was very clear in his assertion that Canada is allowing organised crime from India, especially Punjab to thrive there. "But, as I said, one of our concerns which we have been telling them is that, you know, they have allowed organized crime from India, specifically from Punjab, to operate in Canada," said Jaishankar. On Friday, Canadian police arrested three individuals in connection with the murder of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. These detainees are purportedly members of an alleged 'hit squad'. According to a report from the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, authorities are also probing potential links to three other murders in Canada, including the tragic killing of an 11-year-old boy in Edmonton. Reportedly, the arrested individuals fulfilled various roles on the day Nijjar was assassinated, serving as shooters, drivers, and spotters. Identified as Kamalpreet Singh, Karanpreet Singh, and Karan Brar, their alleged involvement signifies a multifaceted operation in Nijjar's murder. The trio, all Indian nationals, were arrested in the city of Edmonton in Alberta on Friday, police said. #SJaishankar #NijjarKillingProbe #News #TimesNow #TimesNowNews #InstaWithTimesNow

Indian-origin astronaut Sunita Williams is ready to fly into space again on the Boeing Starliner. The take-off is scheduled to take place at the Kennedy Space Center on May 7, 2024 at 8:04 am (IST). Sunita Williams will be serving as the mission pilot. The 58-year-old has spent a total of 322 days in space, according to NASA's official figures. She used to hold the record for maximum spacewalk time by a female astronaut as she has spent 50 hour and 40 minutes across seven spacewalks. Butch Willmore and Sunita Williams are set to fly to the space station for around a week "to test the Starliner spacecraft and its subsystems before NASA certifies the transportation system for rotational missions to the orbiting laboratory for the agency's Commercial Crew Program." Previously, she has flown twice to space, first in 2006 and again in 2012. She is a marathon runner, and mentioned that she is fond of samosas, the report added. In the interview, she mentioned Ganesh is her "good luck charm" and will be carrying a statue of Lord Ganesh with her on the commercial crew flight. Earlier, she had carried copies of the Bhagavad Gita to space, the report said. Her flight partner is Barry Eugene "Butch" Wilmore, who is a navy test pilot and has flown to space twice. The two will be launching on a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket to the International Space Station. They will spend about a week in the station and will be making a return journey by parachuting to the southwest of the United States. #SunitaWilliams #Space #News #TimesNow #TimesNowNews #InstaWithTimesNow

Pickleball has set up a fashion trend all over the world but male players have not been able to hit the ground running. The players looked good and certain guidelines have also been observed. The white dress code might have drawn inspiration from we all know, Wimbledon. But unlike tennis players, most of the male pickleball players have struggled to match up their attire with their female counterparts. From Bjorn Borg to Serena Williams, tennis players have always been trendsetters innovating new kinds of fashion trends on the court. #Pickleball #Sports #TimesNow #TimesNowNews #InstaWithTimesNow

Air India economy class domestic flyers opting for lower fare buckets will now have a check-in baggage allowance of 15 kg -- instead of 25 kg earlier. All big Indian carriers offer 15 kg check-in to domestic flyers (without extra charge) and AI's generous allowance used to be its USP for economy flyers within India that would somewhat make up for the long-awaited improved cabin product on the airline's old planes. Regarding this change, an AI spokesperson said: "We introduced a menu-based pricing model or branded fare families last year in line with global airline industry norms. Air India’s fare families, named ‘Comfort’, ‘Comfort Plus’, and ‘Flex’ are groupings of fares that offer different levels of benefits and fare restrictions at different price points. The fare families are designed to let our guests choose the kind of fare and services that best suit their requirement." #AirIndia #DomesticFlight #TimesNow #TimesNowNews #InstaWithTimesNow

A Delhi startup’s co-founder says he is “impressed” after receiving an unusual job application - where the candidate offered him money to get hired. Paras Chopra, the former CEO of software company Wingify, said that while he didn’t accept the $500 on offer, the “unique” pitch did capture his attention. The employer shared on X a screenshot of the message that read: “I want to work at Wingify. I have a unique proposition for you. I'll pay you $500 to hire me. If I don't prove myself to be one of the best within a week, you can fire me and keep the money.” The job applicant said he was making this radical offer just so he can “have skin in the game” and not waste the company’s time. Although Chopra didn't disclose any further details relating to the job seeker's identity or professional background, his tweet caught significant attention. Commenting on the post, a user wrote: "It’s a super bad pitch. Getting impressed with this pitch is also bad for hiring managers." Another said: "It also speaks about the sad state of jobs currently - where a candidate has to mention $$$ to get attention" For all its perceived unacceptability, the job application also had a smattering of proponents. "Another way to look at this is: the competitive state of industry where most are skilled enough (or look like that), so him mentioning about money is basically him saying ‘I’ll bet my money on myself before you do that’," one argued. "I feel it shows the confidence and risk appetite required to survive and thrive in the competitive environment!" It's not the only standout piece of corporate communication to go viral over the past week. Virat Kohli has been in red-hot form in IPL 2024, scoring 500 runs in 10 games, however, his strike rate has been questioned by critics. Kohli has particularly struggled against the spinners, but the batter looked in no trouble whatsoever when he blasted a magnificent 70 in 44 balls at a strike rate of 159 against Gujarat Titans. Kohli scored 61 runs at a strike rate of 179 against the spinners, making a huge statement. After his fiery innings, Kohli went on an explosive rant against the critics and said that it is easier to sit and talk from the box, adding that he only focusses on winning the games for his team. "All the people who talk about strike rates and me not playing spin well are the ones talking about low strike-rate,” Kohli had said during an interview. “For me, it’s about winning the games for the team and there is a reason why you’ve done it for 15 years, you’ve done this day in and day out, you’ve won games for your teams, I’m not quite sure that if you haven’t been in that situation yourself, to sit and talk about the game from the box," he added. Former India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar was irked at reply to the critics and blasted him, saying that his strike rate was only questioned when he got out after playing an innings at a strike rate of 120. "Commentators questioned only when the strike rate was 118. I'm not too sure. I don't watch too many matches, so I don't know what the other commentators have said otherwise. But if you have a strike of 118 and then you get out in the 14th or the 15th with a strike-rate of 118, I mean, if you want applause for that, that's a little bit different. That's different," said Gavaskar on Star Sports. Gavaskar said that commentators don't have an agenda against Kohli and they only speak what they see. #SunilGavaskar #ViratKholi #TimesNow #TimesNowNews #InstaWithTimesNow

An Apple watch saved life of a 35-year-old woman in Delhi after it alerted her to a medical emergency situation. Reportedly, the woman suffered from Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) - a rapid and abnormal heart rhythm. The woman later thanked Apple CEO Tim Cook and the Apple team "for making such an advanced and precise recording ECG app." Sneha Saha, a policy researcher, began feeling her heart racing late in the evening on April 9, reaching an alarming rate of 230 beats per minute. She initially thought it might be a panic attack caused by stress. She tried to calm down by doing breathing exercises and drinking water, but her rapid heart rate persisted. When she put on her Apple Watch to check her heart rate, the device recommended that she see a doctor. However, she escaped the initial warning. But around midnight, the Apple Watch issued another alert, indicating that her heart rate was still extremely high and that she was experiencing Atrial Fibrillation (AFib), an irregular and often rapid heart rhythm. At that point, she decided to go to the emergency room at Fortis Hospital in Vasant Kunj, near her home in Munirka. Doctors at the hospital were unable to read her pulse and had to administer three delivery of direct current (DC) shocks (50 50 100 joules) to revive her heart's sinus rhythm. Subsequently, she was shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Sneha told news agency IANS, "Had the Apple Watch not alerted me of the serious condition around midnight, I would not have gone to the hospital and would have lost my life." The doctors diagnosed her condition as a type of Tachycardia, where the heart rate is abnormally high, often due to stress or physical exertion. Apple CEO Tim Cook Responds Apple CEO Tim Cook responded saying, "I am glad you sought the medical attention and treatment you needed. Thanks so much for sharing your story with us." "After the harrowing experience, I realised it is very important for us to understand our health, our sleep patterns, our heart rates as we all deal with stress," Sneha said. #AppleWatch #TimCook #DelhiWomen #TimesNow #TimesNowNews #InstaWithTimesNow

Declared guilty of practicing witchcraft by the village panchayat, two elderly tribals were tortured for three hours, dragged 1 km into the forest, and then burnt alive. The incident took place in a remote Barsewada hamlet of Maoist-affected Gadchiroli late Wednesday. The police recovered charred remains from a nullah in the forested hamlet of Etapalli taluka The incident came to light after Sadu Mohunda, one of the deceased's kin, alerted and moved police. This led to the arrest of 15 persons, including the son and husband of one of the deceased, according to the report. They were remanded in custody for five days. The two tribals, Jamni Telami, 52, and Dewu Atlami, 57, were pinned down by a mob publicly and assaulted for three hours after the panchayat had declared them guilty of practicing black magic that led to the death of an infant, Arohi Telami. It was found that Jamni's son Devaji and husband Diwakar reportedly led the lynch mob. The panchayat of village Barsewada, where the husband and son resided, had summoned Jamni, who lived with her parents in the Vasamundi hamlet. Following the diktat, she travelled to Barsewada, with her brother Mohunda, to clarify her stand before village elders, the report said. She was assaulted and thrashed at the meeting by the assembled tribals and asked to name her accomplice. She allegedly took Atlami's name as the other voodoo practitioner and accomplice. External affairs minister S Jaishankar on Friday said that "India is open and welcoming nation" as he rejected US President Joe Biden's 'xenophobic' remarks against the country. The reaction came after Biden, at an election fundraiser on Thursday, clubbed India with Japan, China, and Russia, and used the term 'xenophobic' to describe these countries. "I would say, in the history of the world, that it's been a society which has been very open ... different people from different societies come to India," Jaishankar. He also cited the Modi government's implementation of CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) to prove his point. "That's why we have the CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act), which is to open up doors for people who are in trouble… I think we should be open to people who need to come to India, who have a claim to come to India," he said US President Joe Biden had recently claimed that India and Japan as well as Russia and China "xenophobic" nations, asserting that none of these countries, unlike the U.S., welcome immigrants. The United States is a country of immigrants, the White House has said, defending President Joe Biden's remarks at an election fundraiser on May 2. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said that the president was making a "broader point". "He was making a broader point. Our allies and partners know very well that — how much this president respects them," Jean-Pierre told reporters at her daily news conference on Thursday. While addressing his supporters at the Democratic Party fundraiser on May 2 evening, Biden said, "This election is about freedom, America and democracy. That's why I badly need you. You know, one of the reasons why our economy is growing is because of you and many others. Why? Because we welcome immigrants." "We look to — the reason — look, think about it. Why is China stalling so badly economically? Why is Japan having trouble? Why is Russia? Why is India? Because they're xenophobic. They don't want immigrants,” Mr. Biden, the presumptive candidate of the Democratic Party, said. #SJaishankar #JoeBiden #India #UnitedStates #TimesNow #TimesNowNews #InstaWithTimesNow

In a recent incident from Kolkata, a 52-year-old woman spent three days with her 21-year-old daughter's lifeless body in their apartment in an attempt to feed and talk to her. The incident took place in Baranagar. The woman, identified as Debi Bhowmik, had been residing with her daughter, Debolina, in their Lalbari apartment off TN Chatterjee Street since 2006, following a separation from her husband, Debasis Bhowmik, a blood bank employee. Biswanath Saha, a resident, shared that, amid the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021, Debi's parents, both of whom were retired state government employees, had passed away. Following their deaths, only Debi and her daughter had been staying in their apartment. Throughout the pandemic, neighbours extended their support to the mother-daughter duo by providing financial assistance to help sustain the family. Reportedly, after getting a foul smell, some neighbours knocked on their door to enquire about it. According to Archita Mukherjee, a neighbour, Debi opened the door and led them to her daughter's body on the bed, which was in a decomposed state. Debi explained that her daughter, Debolina, had not communicated with her and had refused to eat for three days, despite Debi's efforts to prepare meals of rice and dal and repeatedly encourage her to eat. Despite the neighbors' attempts to convince her otherwise, Debi insisted that her daughter was still alive. Following notification from the neighbours, the police were alerted and subsequently recovered the body, sending it for an autopsy. The cops said that her daughter had passed away at least three days prior. Later, mere hours after the police removed her daughter's body, Debi herself succumbed. Her body was discovered and transported to the Hospital, where she was pronounced dead upon arrival. Similarly, her body underwent an autopsy procedure. “We came to know that the woman had been suffering from schizophrenia,” (sic.) an officer of the Barrackpore commissionerate said. The authorities notified Debi's husband about the deaths; however, he refused to accept the bodies. #Kolkata #MotherDaughter #TimesNow #TimesNowNews #InstaWithTimesNow

The incident occurred around 2:21 pm local time on Sunday as Medley and his sister sat down to eat Church’s Texas Chicken at their home on Kingsley Street, according to an arrest affidavit by Pinellas County authorities. The defendant got in a verbal altercation with the victim before grabbing a bag of chicken from her and began to hurl pieces of the meal at her. “One piece of fried chicken hit the victim in the back and left debris of food on her shoulders,” the affidavit, obtained by The Smoking Gun, states. Later, during his arrest, Medley admitted to throwing two chicken pieces at his sister, adding that one of them struck her back. “He stated he did this because he had not eaten and did not want the piece of chicken the victim offered him, so he became upset,” the arresting officers wrote. Medley was booked into the Pinellas County Jail, from where he was released a day later on recognisance. Another case of battery involving food was reported from the Floridian county last week. During a road rage incident in St. Petersburg, a man allegedly threw pasta at a driver. 46-year-old Nolan Goins was arrested after growing frustrated by the victim’s car’s “glaring lights” to the point that he flung “pasta with sauce” through his passenger window. Although the driver escaped unhurt from the attack, his arms legs and torso were stained from the sauce. Traces of the meal later led to the identification of Goins, who was taken into custody but later released on a $1,000 bond. #ViralNews #TimesNow #TimesNowNews #InstaWithTimesNow

A 22-year-old man was bitten by a snake in a park. His family took him to a doctor, but he died during treatment. The family immersed his body in the Ganga river for two days in the hope of a miracle. The man, Mohit Kumar, was a resident of Jairampur Kudena village in the Anupshahar police station area in Bulandshahr. He had returned after voting on April 26 and then went to a park in the evening where he was bitten by a snake. "Locals in the village had put a tight knot around the wound to stop the blood flow. On our way to the hospital, the man stopped speaking. We took him to Rana Hospital in the city, where doctors refused to admit him and said we should take him to a government hospital. The doctors at the government hospital declared him dead," a relative of the deceased said, according to a report. "We took him to many seers who treat snakebites, but they declared him dead. There's a saying that poison gets removed if you put the body in the Ganga river and we did the same," the relative added. Believing in the superstition, the family then immersed Kumar's body in the river. According to the report, a crowd gathered on the banks of the river Ganga to see the body tied to a railing for hours and hoped for a miracle to happen, videos showed. When the family noticed that there was no movement in his body they then cremated him at the ghat of the river. #TimesNow #TimesNowNews #InstaWithTimesNow

The disturbing video showed Gregor biting Corey's head after the latter fell off multiple times due to the exercise machine’s excessive speed. Knowing that the child was unable to run, footage captured Gregor walking up to the treadmill to increase the speed time and again. At one point when the little boy’s legs gave up, Gregor lifted him and made him stand on the treadmill. Corey's knees folded back and the youngster gets back on before he stumbles off again. The struggle to stay on the machine leads to finally forcing the father to lower the inclination and speed. Now, the 31-year-old is facing charges such as first-degree murder and endangering the welfare of a child. The first witness to testify was the boy's mother, Bre Micciolo, who broke down in tears as she saw the horrifying footage. After being honoured with the Padma Shri award two years ago for his innovative work in reinventing the rare musical instrument 'Kinnera', Darshanam Mogulaiah's circumstances have taken a distressing turn. Recently, he was found working as a daily wage worker at a construction site in Turkayamjal, near Hyderabad. Compounding his challenges, a post-award grant of Rs 1 crore in cash from the Telangana government was spent on family exigencies, leaving the 73-year-old artist, known as "Kinnera Mogulaiah", struggling to afford even two square meals a day. Mogulaiah explained the factors leading to his transition from receiving the fourth-highest civilian award in 2022 to working at a construction site in Turkayamjal. "One of my sons suffers from seizures. For medications (both for my son and myself), I require at least Rs 7,000 per month. Additionally, there are recurring medical tests and other expenses," shared Mogulaiah, who is a father to nine children. Reportedly, three of his kids died from ailments; three are married; three others are still students and dependant on Mogulaiah. The artist's wife passed away four years ago. "I attempted to seek employment from various individuals. While many sympathised and praised my illustrious past, I was consistently turned away. Despite receiving small amounts of assistance, I struggled to secure steady employment," Mogulaiah revealed. The situation was less dire previously. "I used that money for my children's weddings. I even bought a piece of land in Turkayamjal. I started building a house but had to stop midway as I ran out of funds," (sic.) said Mogulaiah. The artist lamented the added difficulty when the Rs 10,000 monthly honorarium sanctioned by the state was abruptly discontinued, expressing uncertainty about the reasons behind it. Additionally, the allotment of a 600-square yard plot in Rangareddy district remains pending. He said "I've been tirelessly visiting government offices and meeting with public representatives seeking assistance. While everyone responds positively, there has been no action taken," shared Mogulaiah. #Hyderabad #PadmaShriAward #TimesNow #TimesNowNews #InstaWithTimesNow

Vijaya Deepika Gangapatnam, a 13-year-old girl from Secunderabad, Telangana has overcome severe physical challenges to excel at para table tennis, clinching medals at a national championship. Born with Brittle Bone Disease, a condition that made her bones extremely fragile, Vijaya has endured 45 fractures in her lifetime. Despite the severe challenges she faced due to her condition, she was the youngest to win a medal at the UTT Para Table Tennis National Championship in Indore. Vijaya's journey in sports began by watching her elder brother, Vijaytej, play tennis. Inspired by his travels and tournaments, she was drawn to sports but had to opt for a safer option. Considering her condition, where a simple fall could result in a fracture, her father introduced her to table tennis, a sport she could safely play at home. The young athlete's potential unfolded spectacularly at the UTT Para Table Tennis National Championship held in Indore this March, where she became the youngest medalist. Vijaya won a silver in the singles category and a bronze in doubles, showcasing her skill and competitive spirit. Her achievement is particularly noteworthy given the everyday hurdles she faces. "She suffered fractures even during delivery, as doctors didn't know she was already suffering from the disease," her father said. These early signs of her condition were evident in prenatal scans that showed her feeble bones. As per media report, Vijaya got numerous fractures growing up particularly during her toddler years while crawling. "Her body weight was on her hands. Now, she uses different wheelchairs at home and to play. She has had accidents transitioning between them and even slipped in the bath, breaking her legs," her father explained. Walking was a challenge until she was seven, compounded by multiple surgeries on her hips and knees, which have affected her mobility and independence in daily activities. Education for Vijaya has also been adapted to her needs. Unable to attend regular school due to her surgeries and the risk of injuries, she is homeschooled by her family. #Telangana #ParaTT #TimeNow #TimesNowNews #InstaWithTimesNow

The family of a young woman who allegedly suffered side effects from the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine are planning to take legal action against the British pharma company that manufactured the vaccine, as well as its Indian partner, the Serum Institute of India (SII). This came after admission by AstraZeneca in UK court documents that its vaccine, marketed in India as Covishield, can, in rare instances, cause severe side effects including blood clots and low platelet counts. The vaccine, developed during the Covid-19 pandemic, was produced in India by the Serum Institute of India (SII), the world's largest vaccine maker, and was one of the main vaccines administered across the country. Venugopalan Govindan, who lost his 20-year-old daughter Karunya in 2021 said, the admission of these potential side effects came too late. In a post on social media platform X, Govindan stated that the Serum Institute should have ceased distribution of the vaccine when several European countries restricted its use due to similar health concerns. “The manufacturer Serum Institute of India, the Government who advertised these vaccines throughout the nation at huge expense to exchequer as 'safe and effective' without sufficient data (and when data emerged about the adverse events from around the world, they chose not to stop the rollout or at least sensitise people and medical fraternity about it), the regulatory bodies that approved it and subsequently didn't intervene to stop it when data emerged about the dangers, are all culpable in the death of my daughter and countless others who have died after taking this so called vaccine,” said Govindan. Previously, Govindan along with Rachana Gangu, who also lost her daughter Rithaika (18) in 2021, had filed a writ petition in the Supreme Court. Their plea sought the establishment of a medical board to investigate the deaths linked to the vaccine, develop a protocol for early detection of adverse effects from vaccinations, and secure compensation for affected families. #AstraZeneca #Covid19 #TimesNow #TimesNowNews #InstaWithTimesNow

In a case from Butler, Pennsylvania, a nurse was sentenced to life in prison, after pleading guilty for the murder and attempted murder of several patients. Heather Pressdee, 41, will serve three consecutive life sentences along with an additional 380 to 760 years in prison. The sentencing took place approximately 48 kilometres north of Pittsburgh and concludes a case that involved the deaths of at least 17 patients across five healthcare facilities in four counties. The incidents occurred between 2020 and 2023. Pressdee faced accusations of administering lethal or near-lethal doses of insulin to a number of patients, many of whom were not diabetic. The murders and attempts took place during overnight shifts, a time when fewer staff were present and the immediate detection of emergencies was less likely. She was initially charged in May 2023 after two patients at a nursing home died and another was seriously injured under her care. This led to a further investigation, which led to dozens of more charges against her. The plea hearing, which began on Thursday, was expected to extend into Friday to accommodate people who wanted to give victim impact statements According to prosecutors, Pressdee’s behaviour had been problematic long before the murders began. She had a history of abusive behaviour towards both patients and staff, leading to several instances of being fired or forced to resign. Despite this, she continued to find employment in various health facilities throughout western Pennsylvania, starting in 2018. Pressdee had a history of being "disciplined for abusive behaviour towards patients and/or staff at each facility resulting in her resigning or being terminated," prosecutors said in court documents. Text messages revealed during the court proceedings revealed Pressdee expressing frustration and hostility towards not only her patients and colleagues but also others she encountered socially. Her nursing licence was suspended shortly after the initial charges were filed early last year. #Pennsylvania #Nurse #LethalInsulin #TimesNow #TimesNowNews #InstaWithTimesNow

Covaxin maker Bharat Biotech it developed the COVID-19 vaccine with a single-minded focus on safety first, followed by efficacy. In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), the vaccine maker said that the safety of Covaxin was evaluated by the Ministry of Health. Bharat Biotech’s statement came in after British pharmaceutical AstraZeneca’s admission that its vaccine, sold as Covishield in India could cause rare side effects. It further said Covaxin was evaluated in more than 27,000 subjects as part of the licensure process. "It was licensed under restricted use in clinical trial mode, where detailed safety reporting was carried out for several hundred thousand subjects," the company said in a post on X. "All the above studies and safety follow-up activities have demonstrated an excellent safety record for Covaxin, without any vaccine-associated incidents of block clot, Thrombocytopenia, TTS, VIT, pericarditis, myocarditis." AstraZeneca row Earlier this week, AstraZeneca admitted that its COVID-19 vaccine, developed by researchers from Oxford University, can cause a rare side effect of blood clotting and low platelet count with the potential to cause TTS or thrombosis with thrombocytopenia. The company is facing more than 50 litigations and has been sued in class action over claims its vaccine caused death and serious injury in dozens of cases. In India, millions were jabbed with Covishield – made by AstraZeneca in partnership with Serum Institute of India or SII - the world's largest vaccine manufacturer, for the supply of the vaccine to the Indian Government. The lawsuit was originally initiated by Jamie Scott, who suffered a permanent brain injury after receiving the AstraZeneca vaccine in 2021. Along with his case, others have also highlighted the severe impact of TTS. Experts say Covishield is safe According to experts, the reported side effects of Covishield are extremely rare, so there should be no panic. Studies say isolated reports of TTS from across the world after CVOID-19 vaccinations have been published since 2021. #Covaxin #AstraZeneca #TimesNow #TimesNowNews #InstaWithTimesNow

Passengers travelling on the Delhi Sarai Rohilla SF Express took to the microblogging site X to express their frustration with the lack of space despite paying for tickets. A passenger recounted how his journey was marred by cramped conditions, particularly when he attempted to use the washroom and found the area obstructed by a group of women. Mehra's post, accompanied by a photo of the crowded conditions, quickly went viral, amassing over five lakh views, 3,000 likes, and numerous comments. Netizens responded with a mix of frustration and suggestions for improvement. Some criticized the government's focus on initiatives like Vande Bharat, neglecting the issues faced by passengers on older trains. A second added, "Right now, platforms are like open fields where anyone can graze. Technology & multiple barricades are needed right from the platform entrance to the train compartments. A murder convict at Shivamogga prison (5 hours away from Bengaluru) in Karnataka had to undergo surgery to remove a mobile phone he had swallowed, to evade prison checks. The incident came to light after the Parushuram, 38, complained of severe stomach pain, leading to his hospitalisation. According to a media report, Parushuram was first taken to McGann Teaching District Hospital in Shivamogga due to intense abdominal pain. When his condition worsened, he was transferred to Bengaluru's Victoria Hospital for further examination and treatment. An ultrasound scan revealed an electronic device lodged in his stomach, prompting doctors to perform surgery. The surgery lasted 75 minutes, during which surgeons removed a Chinese keypad mobile phone from Parushuram's pylorus, a part of the stomach that connects to the small intestine. The medical team noted that the phone had likely been inside him for almost 20 days, which explained his severe discomfort. Parushuram did not inform prison officials about swallowing the mobile phone. It was only after the surgery that the jail authorities discovered what had caused his severe stomachache. Following this, police registered a case against Parushuram for smuggling a mobile phone into the prison. Authorities are investigating how the phone was smuggled into the prison and whether additional security measures are needed to prevent such incidents in the future. #Prison #Bengaluru #Karnataka #News #TimesNow #TimesNowNews #InstaWithTimesNow

A 30-year-old woman from Karnataka, Sweety, and her 11-year-old son, Hridhan, recently embraced the path of Jain monkhood. In a solemn ceremony known as Diksha, symbolising their commitment to a life of spiritual discipline, they were bestowed with new names: Bhavshudhi Rekha Shri Ji for the mother and Hitashay Ratanavijay Ji for the son. According to Viveka, a relative, Bhavshudhi Rekha Shri Ji made the decision to embark on this journey during her pregnancy. She also resolved that her son would follow her footsteps into Jain monastic life. Throughout his upbringing, Hridhan was cognizant of his eventual entry into the monastic fold. In January 2024, the mother-son duo partook in the Diksha ceremony in Surat, Gujarat, and have since taken up residence there. Bhavshudhi Rekha Shri Ji's husband, Manish, and other family members lent their support to her decision, expressing happiness and pride. As images and videos of the ceremony circulated on social media, netizens shared mixed reactions. While some praised the courage required to embrace such a path, others voiced concerns about the child's involvement. One user expressed concern over the child's lack of understanding and maturity to make such a life-altering decision. They stated, "The kid doesn't even know properly where he has been sent to, and away from her mother forever. He can't make such decisions at this immature age. He is just sacrificed by parents." Another questioned the rationale behind starting a family if the ultimate goal was monastic life. They commented, "Why would you marry and have a child when you want to do this in the end?" Additionally, criticism was directed at parents for potentially influencing their child's decision at a tender age. A user expressed, "Being a Jain myself, this is wrong. A child’s free will comes after 18. A parent pushing a child to do something that inflates their ego is pure selfish." #Monkhood #Bengaluru #News #TimesNow #TimesNowNews #InstaWithTimesNow

Amid heightened security concerns due to bomb threats emailed to schools, a woman using a motorised wheelchair encountered an obstacle & was stopped outside check-in area of Blue Line's Sector 16 metro station. CISF personnel instructed her to switch to a Delhi Metro wheelchair. She was informed that she would not be allowed to board the train if she did not switch to a Delhi Metro wheelchair. “If I were to switch from my electric wheelchair to a different one provided by DMRC, I’m not sure what would happen after my metro journey was completed. DMRC would not provide me with a wheelchair outside the station, so how would I travel?” asked Anju, who has polio. Anju, a resident of Mayur Vihar in Delhi & a para archer expressed surprise at CISF personnel's refusal to grant her entry, considering she had used the same wheelchair on multiple occasions in the metro. "This is the first time this has happened. I have been taking my wheelchair into the Delhi metro for 2 years," she stated. Anju was en route to Bahadurgarh in Haryana to consult a doctor for a recent hand injury sustained in an accident. Anju eventually had to opt for a significantly more expensive cab ride. "I pleaded with the CISF personnel for almost an hour to let me into the station, but he simply wouldn't listen," she recounted. Anju, who arrived at Sector 16 around 11 am, expressed her disappointment, stating, "I don't believe in being dependant, but this experience shattered me." Despite hoping for assistance from bystanders or other security personnel, Anju received no support. Pradeep Raj, general secretary of Association for Disabled People, said they had provided Anju with the wheelchair 2 yrs ago. Raj mentioned that it's rare for individuals with electric wheelchairs to be denied metro access. The organisation has supplied these wheelchairs to many para-athletes.
