Last week, #KSUCPM2024 Kayla Curlis took us on a transformative medical trip abroad, specifically to Guatemala City, Guatemala! Kayla was the sole representative from KSUCPM! During her week-long trip, Kayla dedicated her mornings to serving patients in a non-profit diabetic clinic, where she skillfully debrided and dressed lower extremity wounds. Every patient became an integral part of their treatment plan, with a focus on patient engagement and setting achievable goals. In addition to her clinical work, Kayla engaged in enlightening case study presentations and discussions, enriching her medical knowledge and global perspective. Though back in the States, Kayla remains deeply grateful for this unforgettable experience. She describes it as an opportunity to not only provide medical care but also immerse herself in a new culture. I recently attended the 8th Annual International American College of Foot and Ankle Pediatrics (ACFAP) Conference in Moab, UT. It was a life-changing experience, and I'm thrilled to encourage other students to explore the world of conferences and travel! This conference was a game-changer, offering endless opportunities to learn from some of the most brilliant minds in podiatric medicine and pediatrics. I had the privilege of gaining insights from experts like Dr. Louis DeCaro, Dr. Patrick DeHeer, Dr. Patrick Agnew, Dr. John Grady, Dr. Ed Harris, Dr. Mitzi Williams, Dr. Matt Dobbs, and Dr. Hannah Park. We delved into fascinating and crucial topics, from pediatric limb length discrepancy to pediatric biomechanics, vertical talus, pediatric trauma, surgical correction of the pediatric clubfoot, connective tissue disorders, and special needs patient considerations. And that's just the tip of the iceberg! But the learning didn't stop there. I participated in various hands-on workshops, covering everything from dermatology and practice management to vertical talus and clubfoot casting. I even had the unique opportunity to attend a pediatric surgical workshop with cadavers, which was an incredible experience. I want to encourage fellow students to consider the APMSA Travel Grant opportunity – it's a fantastic way to embrace new learning experiences. The future of Podiatric Medicine at @kentstate just got brighter! The Kent State University Board of Trustees approved a game-changing tuition revision for the College of Podiatric Medicine, making quality education more accessible than ever. Starting from the 2024 Spring Semester, tuition for both in-state and out-of-state students will be reduced by $13,866 and $3,139, respectively. Thanks to the recent signing of the biennium budget bill by Gov. Mike DeWine, which included a provision for State Share of Instruction funding (SSI), approximately $3.4 million dollars in annual state subsidy will be allocated to reduce tuition costs for KSUCPM students. KSUCPM students now benefit from: 1. One of the most affordable podiatric medical educations (the most affordable for Ohio residents). 2. One of the most affordable costs of living, in a city that offers both city life and natural tranquility. 3. Educational excellence as this funding expands clinical and research opportunities for KSUCPM students. Annyeonghaseyo! 🇰🇷🌏 Meet Student Doctor Marco Rovira, a 4th-year student at KSUCPM who recently embarked on an incredible journey as a Medical International Service Team member at the 25th World Scout Jamboree in Saemangeum, South Korea. Jamborees are international scout summer camps held every 4 years, uniting scouts from all corners of the globe for two weeks of cultural immersion and outdoor adventures. This time, over 40,000 Scouts from 139 countries came together for an unforgettable experience. As an Eagle Scout and a leader with the Boy Scouts of America, Student Doctor Rovira was assigned to Clinic E, one of six clinics across the massive 3.4-square-mile campsite. To the DPM mentors (like Dr. Kevin Davis) who are catalysts for dreams, we thank you. When Dr. Natalie Spicer attended our residency fair, we asked about her journey to podiatric medicine. As a 3rd year podiatric medical resident at @mercy_health, she highlighted the importance of finding a mentor. ‘As a college senior uncertain about what medical specialty to pursue, I stumbled upon the field of Podiatric Medicine while researching options. Being from a small town in Tennessee, I discovered we only had one DPM practicing locally, and decided to reach out to Dr. Kevin Davis, DPM to better understand what this specialty entailed. With limited expectations, I could not have predicted how my life would change. Upon meeting Dr. Davis, I instantly knew that he’d be an influence in my professional journey. One day of shadowing turned into a year-long immersion in Podiatric Medicine, though it is worth mentioning that I was sold on day one! I balanced my senior classes and collegiate golf commitments, with shadowing Dr. Davis in the clinic, the operation room, and even the wound care center. Dr. Davis, a class of 2000 of the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine, became my mentor, and encouraged me to venture 500 miles away from home to chase my dream of becoming a doctor! I have encountered too many diabetic patients that do not know or understand the full details of their condition and the consequences when not managing the condition. As a podiatric physician, we work with different healthcare specialists and are fully integrated into the healthcare team. Residency has been a rewarding experience!
