Lou was only thirty-six when was forced to retire due to ALS and a mere thirty-eight when it claimed his life. A far cry from the from sixty-five I was told the age that most people are. In fact, the youngest person to be diagnosed with ALS was eight years old. Most of ALS Warriors I know are younger than I am. Familial history was not suspected as the cause of Gehrigβs ALS, only 10% of ALS is caused by familial history. ALS can happen to anyone, anyone. ALS stops your brain from communicating with your muscles, muscles that you need for everything; walking, talking, eating, and most importantly breathing, imagine being trapped in a body that no longer works. If we cure ALS, we cure other similar diseases, like MS. So, please help #EndALS today. If you are unable to donate, talk about it. Thank you! β¨β€β¨ Happy Lunar New Year! Well, it was certainly a year full of challenges, but also a year of great rewards. Some of the challenges include losing my ability to eat real food, losing one of our cats, Bean; being turned down for three clinical trials, having Covid Omicron affect my ability to get the medications that are slowing the disease progression and having the mother of all sinus infections in the last few days of the Ox year. The rewards, letβs start with my sinus infection not being Omicron. More importantly, Iβm still here. Fifty percent of people with ALS pass within the first two years, when I was diagnosed, I honestly did not think I would make six months. What do we say to the god of death? Not today! Thank you, Arya Stark. Act for ALS was passed, I didnβt think it had a snowballβs chance in hell in the Senate. There is real progress on new medications becoming available Shout out to everyone that signed the nurown petition. My fur babies, Yuki watches over me, and is never more than a few feet away. Kuma is the embodiment of silliness and keeps me laughing, I adore that he wags his tail like he is waving a flag. When Iβm having a rough day, I get plenty of nose pokes and puppy kisses. Every night Tuna serenades us with the song of her people, and everyday Padre Froo Froo delivers a bed sermon. Last but, far from least all yβall. Iβve rekindled a friendship with someone I was very close to, and Iβve become friends with an Instagram acquaintance, who is a beautiful soul and has offered me a great kindness. It is truly my family and friends that are getting me through this. I could not fight this fight without you, Iβm so grateful for that, and I have so much love for each and every one of you. β¨β€β¨ We spent the beginning of the week in Houston, where I got to see world renowned ALS specialist Dr. Appel, the good news is I learned some very important things from him and his amazing team, the bad news is my FSR (Functional Scale Rating) is too low for him to risk putting me on trial meds, in case they adversely affect me. So what does this mean? Not much. I am still me, I am still fighting, I will continue to advocate and raise awareness. Every day I wake up is a victory for me, and brings me one day closer to this being a livable illness or a cure. I am grateful for the opportunity to travel and see him, and for the many blessings I have received, but most of all for all of you. I love you and wish you peace during this holiday season. On this last day of #HispanicHeritiageMonth, I want to send a huge thank you to @Mic for everything she does, she is a huge ALS advocate, she gathers a phenomenal amount of data, to make it easy to know where your Reps and Senators stand, she also makes it easy to contact them. She asks questions, I was appalled no one had asked, trying to find causes and clusters. From the bottom of my heart thank you, Michelle. β¨β€β¨ Attitude of Gratitude This is something I came to understand studying yoga. Having ALS has made me so much more aware of the things I am grateful for. I am beyond grateful to experience no shortness of breath. I am grateful to still be eating, even with a broken tooth, regardless of how limited my diet might be. I am grateful for my family, friends, and support system. Let me begin by thanking Brian Wallach and Sandra Abrevaya from @iamalsorg for their testimony at the congressional hearing. They pled our case perfectly. β¨πΊβ¨ Everybody has to go to the dentist. I clench my teeth at night, I have for a long time. So guess what?!? I broke a tooth. Ouch! To get it fixed I was referred to the Advance School of general Dentistry at the University of Texas. I have always been blessed with the good fortune of finding awesome doctors. Dr. Barrera and Dr. Aguilera had me laughing the whole time. I even got to ride Dr. Aguilera's rollercoaster! π They are going to fix my tooth on the fifteenth and I feel safe in their capable hands. I thought about the name for my team, and Laura's O'hana just have the proper ring to it. I am thinking Laura's Lifesavers because your love and support has done exactly that. On Wednesday, I will be seven months old. My current pass times include terrorizing my grandparents, staring out the front window and walks with my Dad. Even though I'm a Daddy's Girl, I love making my Mom laugh. I play peek-a-boo with her from the bottom of the bed when I hear a strange sound, she says my ears are like big pink dorsal fins when I circle the bed and hears the theme from some old movie called, "Jaws". She forgot that dogs bust themselves and when I go running for the bedroom or hide under her chair, she's laughing too hard to tell my Dad what I did.
