Scott was so well respected in this field that he was asked by the Long Island Federation of Labor’s Consortium of Worker Education in October of 2001, to run a re-employment program for over 1,000 Long Islanders displaced by the tragic events of 9/11. Scott is a published feature writer on the subject of navigating the job market and was a career columnist for Newsday, Long Island Business News and the Wall Street Journal’s National Business Employment Weekly. Scott was also an Adjunct Professor at Hofstra University and instructed students in job hunting technique and interviewing. On the most recent episode of The Lebenthal Report, we welcome Perry Zurn, PhD and Dani S. Bassett, PhD. Zurn is Associate Professor of Philosophy at American University and affiliate faculty in the Department of Critical Race, Gender, and Culture Studies. He researches broadly in the fields of political philosophy, gender theory, and applied ethics. His work specifically contributes to critical prison studies and curiosity studies. Bassett is J. Peter Skirkanich Professor, Department of Bioengineering, at the University of Pennsylvania. Bassett studies biological, physical, and social systems by using developing tools from network science and complex systems theory. They’ve written 20+ papers together on neuroscience, curiosity, and collaborating between the sciences and the humanities, and co-wrote Curious Minds: The Power of Connection (MIT Press, September 2022) which is an exhilarating, genre-bending exploration of curiosity’s powerful capacity to connect ideas and people. Identical twins, they wrote that their book “represents the thought of one mind and two bodies”—harnessing their respective expertise in the humanities and the sciences to get irrepressibly curious about curiosity. They identify three styles of curiosity—the busybody, who collects stories, creating loose knowledge networks; the hunter, who hunts down secrets or discoveries, creating tight networks; and the dancer, who takes leaps of creative imagination, creating loopy ones. This week on The Lebenthal Report we welcome author and social activist, Beverly Gooden (@bevtgooden). Beverly is known for her groundbreaking work in domestic violence, victimology, and women's health. She created the Why I Stayed hashtag ( #WhyIStayed) and movement in 2014. Also in 2014, Beverly founded the Ella Mae Foundation, which supports "protection and superior upbringing for children as well as self-actualization and equitable rights for women". She created the Bolt Bag Project, a program that provides basic necessities to anonymous survivors of relationship violence. Beverly was given the "Digital Champion" Heart of Courage award by the Mary Kay Foundation in October 2017. She was chosen by Investigation Discovery and Glamour magazine as the 2015 Inspire A Difference "Everyday Hero" award winner. Her book, Surviving: Why We Stay and How We Leave Abusive Relationships, is a memoir about relationship violence. But at its core, it is about reinvention. On this week's episode of The Lebenthal Report we continue the conversation with Coach Ray Scott. Ray Scott was part of the early wave of Black NBA players who changed how the game of professional basketball is played, leading to the tremendously popular financial blockbuster the NBA is today. Scott was a successful forward/center chosen as the #4 pick by the Detroit Pistons in the 1961 NBA draft. After he was named head coach of the Pistons in 1972, he won Coach of the Year in the spring of 1974—the first Black man ever to capture that honor. Coach Scott’s story is not only captivating but educational and we are privileged to have such a trailblazer on our podcast.
