This is the first of my Body Positivity posts series BODY SHAMING (Part 1) I don't think we fully understand how deep this body shaming issue is and how it has eaten deep into society. Body shaming is everywhere. It happens everyday. At work places, in public transportation, among strangers, among friends. We all do it sometimes consciously and sometimes unconsciously both offline and online. You have body shamed someone, you have been body shamed. I have body shamed someone and I have been body shamed myself. We have even body shamed ourselves at one time or another. I remember an incident back in school when I was still very naive. There was this particular rude and aggressive girl that was always teasing me and humiliating me in public. It was really bad. It was just like whenever she set her eyes on me, something was always pushing her to insult or put me down. I felt bad most of the time because her harsh words really got to me. I even cried a few times and wondered what I ever did to her. Then, one particular semester, I had just returned from the holidays and as soon as she saw me, she wanted to start her nonsense again. If I can remember clearly, her exact words were " See your big stomach. My stomach is flatter than yours" then she laughed wickedly. I didn't reply her or act hurt. I just scrutinized her confidently from head to toe and at that moment I realized something important. I had been a fool all this while. This girl was obviously very insecure and lacked true confidence in herself so she made up for it by being loud and mean to people. I realized that my confidence and my size intimidated her. The look on her face when I stayed strong and didn't react gave her away. At that moment, I discovered my power and resolved that I had control over what people did to me and how it affected me. That incident was a defining point for me and I never again allowed other people's derogatory words and attempts to body shame me affect me again. When you know your worth as a person, nobody's nasty opinion about you can damage your self worth except you allow it. It would only make you stronger.
