We make our soaps with all sorts of interesting ingredients. Cucumber Mint soap uses a whole Long English Cucumber in each batch. Some of our soaps contain coconut milk, or locally sourced goat milk. Ah, the Rose Pink Clay Instant Facial. Finally, we have a restock of this amazing instant facial. The base of this amazing product is a melting cleansing balm, an incredible product on its own (great for dissolving even the most water resistant makeup!). It's combined with a combination of gently scrubbing, cleansing, and skin-loving ingredients like Rice Flour, Colloidal Oats, Kaolin clay, French Pink clay, Zinc Oxide, Aloe Vera, Rosehip extract and Niacinamide. Then, it's lightly scented with a hint of rose fragrance oil. When you first apply it, you can feel the gentle exfoliation along with the creamy moisturizing base. Add a little water and it turns into a beautiful creamy smooth lotion. Leave it on your skin for 10-15 minutes, then start massaging more water into the facial; the resulting lotion is easily rinsed away, leaving your skin feeling refreshed and oh, so smooth and silky. If you've ever tried any of our creams and/or lotions, you know that we already have some great recipes. Me being me, however, I'm always experimenting, trying new things, looking for tweaks and/or ingredients that will take our products to the next level. This time, I've been experimenting with texture and humectants (ingredients that help to draw moisture to the skin). The cream on the right contains a blend of three humectants that include betaine. This skincare active is an amino acid that naturally occurs in our bodies. As a skincare ingredient, it is a humectant derived from sugar cane and beets. In skincare, it plays a huge role in skin moisturizing and soothing. Even the most sensitive skin reacts well to this ingredient. It holds water and moisture so well that it’s a crucial ingredient in many hydrating shampoos. We've added extra emollients to this perennial favourite, making it a softer, silkier cream that glides on and soaks in quickly. It's very quickly become a personal favourite. Attempt #2 - Jelly Soap This stuff is FUN! It's jiggly, it's glittery, it smells almost edible, and it lathers! Bath time just got a whole lot more fun! There's a bit of a learning curve to this soap. My first attempt was a flop - I didn't get it hot enough to gel properly. As well, small 8 oz batches can be more difficult to work with because it cools down more quickly than a larger batch. This little batch, though, turned out perfect. In all the years I've been making soap (about 10 years now), I have never forgotten to add the fragrance. Until today. It seems Arthritis had become a part of my life. I never realized just how painful it can be, especially when my fingers start to swell up. Of course, you know I'm going to do some online reading to see what I can do for myself. There are several ingredients that may, possibly, probably not, provide some relief and I'm willing to give them a try. Anecdotally, ingredients like MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane), Emu oil, and Calendula extract may be helpful and I came a cross a recipe in a forum I hang out in, made by a member who's been making it for many years. Obviously, I'm not making any medical claims; if it helps even a little bit... great! If not, it's a lovely moisturizer. Soap doesn't always do what you expect it to. When I made this soap last week (Oatmeal Milk & Honey), I put it outside in -15C (ish) weather to keep it from overheating. I was looking for something that I could make quickly but that's still an amazing product. While going through a bunch of photos on one of my favourite FB groups, I came across these Bubble Scrub Bars and decided they'd be perfect! If you're a shower person, these are for you! Each little bar is loaded with skin loving ingredients like Cocoa and Shea Butter, with Soothing Oatmeal and Herbs. They explode into a creamy, luscious lather when rubbed over your wet skin, while providing a gentle exfoliation. The thermometer at our back door shows that it's -12C at the moment. I decided that it's the perfect temperature to make our Oatmeal Milk & Honey soap, a soap that is notorious for overheating and cracking, something that drives me absolutely crazy! It's sitting outside right now, literally chilling. After an hour or so, I'll bring in it inside and keep an eye on it but, for now, it can sit out in the cold. I love candles. When I tried to find my favourite candle maker, I found that she's no longer in business. Thankfully, I know the fragrance of my favourite candle and have already used it in a soap and a lotion. I purchased a candle making kit from @villagecraftcandle so I could make my own, with that gorgeous scent, Rose Quartz. The kit came with six containers (with lids) and everything needed to make the candles. It also came with three fragrances, three of their best sellers. I already had fragrances in mind but did use one of the three - Roasted Espresso (the one on the right). The other two, from the left, are Rose Quartz (my fave), and Namaste. All three are really nice and even my husband likes them. Now, I just need the patience while they cure for two weeks. One thing I do know - I won't be getting into making candles for sale; I have enough on my plate without taking on another craft. I came across this beautiful fragrance a few years ago, in a candle and decided I just HAD to use it in a soap and probably a hand cream as well. I'm calling it Tranquility because each time I smell it, I feel a sense of calm tranquility. Delicate rose, lily, and jasmine intertwine with fruity red currant, raspberry, and peach. With soothing rose water, tender lily petals, and grounding patchouli, it evokes tranquility and love. Each bar of the soap has a Rose Quartz embedded in it. Because the fragrance oil has some vanilla in it, over time, the bars will darken to a tan colour, which will beautifully offset the pink. The hand and body lotion soaks in quickly, leaving your skin feeling moisturized but never greasy. The beautiful, feminine fragrance will linger lightly on your skin. Let me say, right off the top, I don't make bath bombs to sell. I love bath bombs but they're too finicky, way too messy, and I have enough on my plate. That said, I love me a good bath bomb! I found an amazing channel on YouTube this week and I came across this recipe for Butter Bath Bombs and knew I HAD to try it. I made them last night and decorated them with some Aztec Gold Mica in alcohol this morning. I'm going to let them dry for another day or two but I'm really looking forward to trying these. One of the ingredients is chopped up cocoa butter. The little bits of the cocoa butter will melt in the warm bath water, infusing into the water and helping to soften the skin. They're also made with the addition of coconut milk powder, another ingredient that's fantastic for skin. These are scented with the comforting scent of Oatmeal, Milk & Honey. I love experimenting with products I think might be something special. It doesn't always work out the way I hope it will but other times, it does. This is one product I think I really like. I've made three different iterations, each a little thicker than the other. The one on the left, in the fancy lip gloss tube, is the most liquid of the three. It's made with Castor, Jojoba, Moringa, and Rosehip seed oils, coloured with a bit of Copper Moon and flavoured with Orange Creamsicle. The second one is the thickest and most luxe of the three. It's made with Squalane, Rosehip seed oil, Vitamin E, and the addition of an oil soluble Vitamin C and Hyaluronic Acid. In this particular case, I coloured it very lightly with a shimmery rose gold colourant and flavoured it with Green Apple. The third lip oil is right in the middle as far as texture goes. Ingredient-wise, it's similar to the first lip oil but with Meadowfoam oil instead of Moringa oil. It's coloured with a colorant called French Silk Stockings and lightly flavoured with Raspberry. The texture of all of these is really nice; it's lighter than a lip gloss but thicker than a straight oil. It glides on and helps to moisturize without being sticky. I'm not sure which is my personal favourite yet but I do know I'll be keeping one of these tubes handy from now on. Have you ever tried lip oil?
