Your toddler doesn’t need an iPad. 📱⁠ ⁠ Hate to be that guy (actually I don’t), but did you know early screen exposure has been associated with lower cognitive abilities, language development and academic performance… shit, is it really worth it?⁠ ⁠ And no, iPad’s aren’t needed for educational content. Sorry to burst that bubble.⁠ ⁠ Not to mention the problems with social-emotional development and significant behaviours too…especially around the transition away from the iPad.⁠ ⁠ Might be an unpopular opinion but I believe kids need to be outside kicking around, making friends and getting creative with their imagination. iPads are a barrier to this. ❌⁠ ⁠ And don’t get me started on the fact that they’re used as a babysitter to keep kids quiet… mind boggling. 🤪⁠ ⁠ Now, I’m all for the TV in small doses e.g. following current recommendations of no more than 1 hour for 2 - 5 year olds. ⁠ ⁠ The thing about the TV 📺 is that it’s not easily controlled by your child. Top tips to overcome picky eating:⁠ ⁠ 🍈 Set a mealtime routine, set fairly specific times for food throughout the day and stick to it where you can. If your child is constantly grazing, mealtimes are going to be a shit show because they’re just not hungry! ⁠ ⁠ 🍇 Stop offering shitty food (whoop said it..) of course they’re going to prefer salty and sweet foods… it’s manufactured to give humans a dopamine hit when consumed but if it’s not on offer, then there’s no fight. ⁠ ⁠ 🍉 Put less on your child’s plate at mealtimes, you can always add more if they’re really hungry!⁠ ⁠ 🍊 Make mealtimes a family affair, children always eat better when they eat with their family - so says A LOT of research. Turn off the TV or tablet and put phones away!⁠ ⁠ 🍌 Stop talking about the food, talk about the day and about fun things to come! Stop bribing, begging, reasoning for “one more bite”.⁠ ⁠ 🍍 Research “Division of Responsibility” - or wait for a post on this coming soon!⁠ Keep mealtimes short and sweet, seriously 10 - 15 minutes MAX for our littles. Long, painful mealtimes will definitely set your kiddo off.⁠ ⁠ 🍑 Keep offering, even if your child doesn’t love avocado right now, in time they might.. But if you stop offering, they’ll never get a chance!⁠ ⁠ 🍒 Let them eat what they want from what is on offer. Forcing eating will always backfire - let your child listen to their body! UGH, can we just not. There are SO many more effective and supportive ways to minimise misbehaviour and increase the calm in your home. 🤍⁠ ⁠ Sending our kids to their rooms is NOT one of them, in fact this is one of those things I never recommend to anyone, ever…⁠ ⁠ The reason? We want the bedroom to be a safe and calm place, a place that oozes warm fuzzies. Not a place to dread being (also avoids a lot of sleep issues too). 💤⁠ ⁠ Sending our kids to their rooms when they’ve made a mistake only teaches them to suppress their feelings, rather than express them safely and then learn how to problem solve. 😭⁠ ⁠ Go to your room sends a big old message ‘you and your feelings aren’t valid, go and think about what you’ve done and only come out when you’re ready to be good’⁠ ⁠ The main thing your child needs from you, is to know that they’re understood. No the behaviour isn’t always acceptable, but the feelings are. When you child feels understood, they calm - a hell of a lot faster than when you rush in with verbal carry on! 😅⁠ ⁠ Again team, it’s our job to TEACH. To model appropriate behaviours when we ourselves have big feelings. To talk about what we could do differently next time. To problem solve. Brace yourself, this is going to get heavy 😅⁠ ⁠ If you’re giving your kids (or even your partner) the silent treatment...Take this as your sign to CUT THAT SHIT OUT RIGHT NOW.⁠ ⁠ Silent treatment is an appalling way to manipulate change in your home or dish out as punishment ❌⁠ ⁠ Here’s what silent treatment does to your kid:⁠ ⁠ ❌ That their one (or two) most safest place and people in the world can cut them off easily when they make a mistake⁠ ⁠ ❌ Feel alone, rejected and abandoned therefore screwing up their self-esteem and self-confidence⁠ ⁠ ❌ Your child will make untrue stories up about themselves to fill in the gaps that you’re leaving by ignoring them⁠ ⁠ ❌ A recipe for insecurity and anxiety⁠ ⁠ ❌ Makes your child feel utterly powerless, teaching them to shutdown⁠ ⁠ ❌ Severs the parent-child bond OR creates a child who becomes extremely co-dependent and attached. A child who is constantly trying to please their parents and striving for perfection. ⁠ ⁠ ❌ Teaches your child how to treat others when they’re unhappy, hello issues with further relationships…⁠ ⁠ Phoar, heavy right… and certainly something to avoid at all costs!⁠ ⁠ So, what do we do instead?⁠ ⁠ COMMUNICATE! It's just 10 minutes so all those hectic expectations of spending hours of play together can go in the bin! (Of course, if you can make it longer then absolutely GO FOR IT). 🙌🏼⁠ ⁠ Filling our child's cup with positive attention will deepen the connection and reduce unwanted behaviours. This is an opportunity for closeness. This can also be a real game changer for toddlers who are struggling at bedtime.⁠ ⁠ Often we carry a lot of guilt around never having enough time, always being on the go, and pressure to get all the things done but we can let this go now! Just 10 minutes a day (or even a few times a day) can be all our kids need to feel connected, seen, heard, valued and be an ABSOLUTE GAME-CHANGER for behaviour. ⁠ ⁠ What should this time look like?⁠ ✨ It is 1:1, intentional parent/child time⁠ ✨ This time is uninterrupted - set boundaries around this with other siblings⁠ ✨ Undivided attention - put your phone on silent and away!⁠ ✨ No screens - duh⁠ ✨You may choose to use a timer or just end in a natural way, however, if you have more than one child a timer will be necessary to keep things fair ⁠ ✨ Let your child guide the play, it's not about what you want to do during this time!⁠ ✨ Ask them what they want to do.⁠ ✨ Ask them what they want to talk about!⁠ ✨ Always end with an "I love you always" type statement and a kiss and cuddle⁠ ⁠ How do you spend 10 minutes with your little one?
