They are having a ball in Bath! My Scottish theme continues when my son Jamie (pictured here in his Ogilvy Tartan trews!) commissioned me to photograph the University of Bath Spring Ball of which he is president. Sadly, my darling Papa died aged 89, just over a week ago on 3rd January, hence I’ve been quiet here for a while. This was the last photograph I took of him with my youngest son, Caspar, before he became ill in the Autumn. He was immense fun with a great , and, sometimes mischievous, sense of humour! The 2nd photo is one of my favourites on my mantelpiece. It took me a little while to decide to open @arummor_vale_farm up to fellow models and photographer’s. As a South Australian model & creative self shooting photographer, I needed to spend a few years here first, seeing how this space worked, in both a photographic & physical sense. In today's post, we will explore the exterior of this remarkable property. It was really quite a challenge to choose only 10 images to showcase the extensive grounds and numerous viewpoints. From a flowing stream and large pond to a rooftop garden and natural pool, this location offers a plethora of remarkable features. Although set on an expansive piece of land nestled in a quiet corner of the Constantia greenbelt, you will still find many intimate areas, all of which add to the overall charm of the property. The building itself stands proudly yet harmoniously blending with its lush surroundings. Do visit this non touristy and beautiful town called Saint Savinien which looks onto the River Charente. We took our visiting friends, Carina & Clare, who loved the boat trip along the peaceful river. My husband & I spent many a Saturday morning having coffee whilst our boys went to music school here. If you learn an instrument in France you have to do music theory. Although they were on their way to being bilingual by then, they have told me, it all went over their heads & they remember nothing but squiggles🤣 I was a little over optimistic then! We enjoyed the coffee & croissants though. If you are in the area, do put it on your list of visits, barely seen a tourist here. The 5 log cabins are constructed using mostly wooden materials, which add a sense of warmth and comfort to the rustic design and complement the natural surroundings. Warm, rich materials and tones are used throughout the cabins enhancing the cozy and inviting atmosphere. Large doors opening onto the decks and wood-burning fires further enhance the overall ambiance. All of the cabins offer open-plan living which seamlessly connect them to the lake and surrounding scenery. In some of the cabins you will find triangular windows in the eaves which allows natural light to flood the space and showcase the stunning views. CABIN BY THE LAKE Available for Stills and Film. A magical location set at the foot of the Mostertshoek Mountains on the outskirts of the small town of Wolseley in the Ceres Valley. On the farm, surrounded by orchards and a working fruit farm, you will find 5 charming individually styled log cabins which sit on the edge of a lake. The cabins are set far enough apart from one another and because the cabins all face the lake, with bush in between them, from certain vantage points you really do feel like you are the only cabin on the lake. Besides spectacular view overlooking the lake and mountain vistas beyond, the cabins each have outdoor showers, fire-pits, expansive decks and wood burning hot tubs, to name but a few features. And although the cabins have a rustic appeal they are in fact luxuriously kitted out! Following on from Monday’s post ‘Less is More’ - fellow architect, designer, writer, and educator Frank Lloyd Wright elaborates on this design/life thinking. Although ‘Less is More where More is no good’ essentially means the same - living a simple considered life devoid of superfluous clutter - it suggest that this idea does not necessarily need to be a hard and fast rule, or should we say ‘sometimes’ this idea cannot be applied in its entirety. The idea 'allows' the interpreter some personal freedom and balance without being excluded from holding the ‘Less is More’ values of simplicity, restraint, and minimalism. Frank Lloyd Wright (1867 – 1959) played an important role in the evolution and development of modern architecture and like Mies van der Rohe was one of the pioneers of modern architecture. DESERT PRINCE is not new to our books yet it remains one of our all-time favorites! It is no wonder that Desert Prince has been seen in many international décor and architecture publications such as Wallpaper. It is an exceptional piece of architecture, envisaged and brought to life by South African born Architect Jenny Benningfield. Set on the edge of the Great Karoo on the outskirts of the historic town of Prince Albert. The house has been designed to work to a passive solar principle. In the heat of the summer months shutters are used to keep it cool and filter the light, in winter the openings become sun-catchers that not only warm the space but allow filtered light to fill the house. Large openings and windows frame the spectacular views of the Karoo plains that surround the house. The upper terrace is quite something – offering views of the wide-open landscapes and the famous Karoo day/night skies. Ingeniously considered architectural details are purposeful and give the home its individual character and aesthetic. CAMPBELL HOUSE architectural details It's hard not to take note of (and share) the architectural detail in the stairwell of CAMPBELL HOUSE. It is the spinal cord of the home leading you upwards - an incredible sculptural detail! The curved edges, neutral uncluttered palette and muted light soften the hardness of the materials used. The space between the wall and the side of the steps not only lets in light from below but gives you a sense that the stairs are floating. The vertical linear wall light not only leads you upwards but acts as both a practical source of light and a graphic piece of art. Day 2 int. living space CAMPBELL HOUSE As mentioned in the last post there is a generosity of space throughout the house. Although the property is narrow and relatively small the architect have capitalised on space (and light) by going upwards. In fact the use of varying levels, open plan living spaces and large windows/doors make the space feel extremely generous. Yet the split level areas cleverly creates a subtle and intimate division in the large open-plan living space. The use of industrial-like materials such as the aggregate concrete floors, shutter concrete ceilings and large black material clad fireplace are beautifully tempered by elements such as warm wooden panel seating, carefully consider modern and mid-century style furniture pieces, an amazing collection of curated modern artworks and exquisitely styled decor details – creating a space that is both considered and personal. In addition the indoor plant life and the green from the outdoors seen through the large doors and windows integrate the indoor and outdoor spaces seamlessly. Although the space seems clean and uncluttered there is an amazing amount of ‘eye candy’ to pore over - giving the space/home an amazing personality.
