February 8, 2007 was a major milestone in the enduring campaign by workers and their unions for justice for asbestos victims. On that day, the company “James Hardie” agreed to a compensation deal for its former employees who were the victims of asbestos. This agreement was the direct result of the heroic and inspiring campaign by victims of asbestos and the union movement for justice. James Hardie was once one of the biggest companies in Australia. It had a long history with asbestos through mining, producing fibro sheets and pipes, insulation and brake linings. As the ACTU noted in 2007, evidence that was presented at the NSW Special Commission of Inquiry, known as the Jackson Inquiry, suggested that James Hardie had knowledge of some of the dangers of asbestos as early as the 1930s. The fight against asbestos and for justice for asbestos victims is one of deep emotion and commitment for the union movement. It is about our rights as workers to be safe at work, and to enjoy long, decent, healthy lives. Today, campaigning against asbestos continues, with the Australian union movement strongly contributing to global action to end the use of asbestos. Australia’s unions are also leading a campaign against other workplace substances such as the use of silica dust which can cause lung cancer and other adverse effects. “This year our movement acknowledges the efforts of unions to win world leading protections for workers against deadly silica dust including the banning of engineered stone which has been responsible for as many as 1 in 4 stonemasons being diagnosed with this incurable disease,” said ACTU Assistant Secretary Liam O’Brien. Students sit in groups of two, three or four, face to face, around a piece of paper (A3 is best). The paper is divided into sections based on the number of group members. There is an additional section added, usually in the middle. 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽𝘀: 1. Distribute one piece of paper to each group. 2. The group’s scribe can draw the appropriate place mat. This may need to be modelled by the teacher. Alternatively, have the place mats pre-drawn. 3. Teach and review the collaborative skills needed to have them successfully complete the place mat task, including the social skills of equal voice, being polite, using inside voices and the communication skill of active listening. 𝗕𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁𝘀: Students are more accountable to both themselves and each other because of the visibility of the group members while completing the task. They can share more easily and learn from each other while working. The place mat strategy provides a process for the group to come to consensus on a topic or idea. This visibility of each other is also one of its flaws. Students who struggle with the content are more at risk publicly; so, a key consideration that can impact the successful use of place mats is student safety. One idea is to cut up the place mat to allow students to work on their own initially. The teacher can move around the room to assist and support these students before they get together with their group and tape their place mat sections back together and discuss their ideas. This can see students provide more information and think more deeply when allowed to work on their own at first. Students can use the place mat to capture what they think are the key ideas of the topic being explored in the lesson. While Think Pair Share is easy for teachers to use and a simple concept for students to understand and follow, the success of this strategy relies on two key things: 1. The structure of the pairs (friendship, random or teacher selected); and 2. The teacher’s skill level with managing wait time, framing the question/s, accountability, safety and active participation. 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽𝘀: 1. The teacher frames a question and provides the instructional skill of wait time for students to think. Keep in mind the more complex the question, the more wait time students will need. 2. Students are then asked to turn to their partner and share. (Consider how partners will be chosen; odd number of students or EAL/D students can form a group of three or one student can share with the teacher.) Remind them that you will be randomly selecting them to share their thinking so they both need to be prepared to respond. 3. Students are then selected to respond. 𝗕𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁𝘀: Think Pair Share maximises talk time as groups are kept to two. “Neurologists show that talk is critical for intellectual growth. Vygotsky, Freire, Piaget and B.F. Skinner all argued that learning is socially constructed” (𝘐𝘯𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘐𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦, 𝘱𝘨 118). Today is 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝘁 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸 and 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘀' 𝗠𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗮𝘆. The day highlights how to prevent occupational deaths, injuries, diseases and illnesses. It is also a day to remember those who have died from a work-related injury or illness. According to Safe Work Australia there was a total of 172 worker fatalities documented in 2022. Any workplace fatality is tragic and unacceptable. By raising awareness of the importance of health and safety in the workplace, Australian workplaces can implement an effective and preventative approach to work health and safety and ultimately save lives. Happy Earth Day 2024! Earth Day 2024 is a commitment to end plastics for the sake of human and planetary health, demanding a 60 per cent reduction in the production of 𝗮𝗹𝗹 plastics by 2040. The theme for Earth Day 2024 is 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗲𝘁 𝘃𝘀. 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀, calls to advocate for widespread awareness on the health risk of plastics, rapidly phase out all single use plastics, urgently push for a strong UN Treaty on Plastic Pollution, and demand an end to fast fashion. The Howard Government was known to be anti-unionist, famously symbolised by the 1998 Maritime Dispute. The Patrick Corporation, backed by the federal government, sacked its highly-unionised workforce and tried to replace them with workers who were not members of the Maritime Union of Australia (MUA). Security guards wearing balaclavas accompanied by barely-restrained attack dogs appeared on the wharfs of Australia. On the other side of the fence were the maritime workers who just wanted to go to work, earn a decent wage and be able to depend upon their union for protection. Led by the legendary John Coombs, the MUA sprang into action, organising community pickets and launching a legal challenge alongside the ACTU. The response in support of the wharfies was emphatic. Across the country unionists from a variety of trades and industries joined the community picket lines. A motion is a proposal put forward for discussion and decision. At your worksite, your branch may put forward a motion that is a call to action or a proposal. Branch motions may be provided to your school or college administration team, or to the SSTUWA office. Branch motions may also be forwarded to District Council, Executive, or State Council. What happens to a branch motion depends on its purpose. Before sick leave, you turned up to work if you were sick, or you went without pay. In 1907, the Shearers’ Award saw the first entitlement to sick leave. It meant that a worker could be absent from work if they were unwell. Sick leave provisions began to appear in awards in the 1920s and unions have campaigned hard for better sick leave conditions over the years, across all industries. Did you know that the decisions made at the SSTUWA are not just made by a single person, but through a collaborative effort involving members, elected committees, and the elected Executive team? State Council is the governing body of the SSTUWA and its supreme decision-making authority, with policy directives issued by State Council to be adhered to by all members. Meeting twice a year, State Council considers motions put forward by branches and District Councils. These decisions guide the policies and processes of the union, giving members a direct say in the union’s direction and governance. State Council is made up of the senior officers, ordinary Executive members, general secretary and delegates elected from each district. This week for #ThrowbackThursday we remember the Shearers’ Strike of 1891, a defining moment for the labour movement. A Shearer’s strike began in Queensland in 1891 when employers sought to introduce union-busting contracts and a reduction in pay rates. The repression was fierce. Strikers were literally read the Riot Act, and their leaders were arrested at bayonet-point. The workers were defeated, only to be subject to further attacks in the years that followed. This dispute was so bitter that the anti-union premier introduced a law that would have allowed for secret trials and the arrest of trade unionists without a warrant. According to some conservatives, basic rights applied to everyone – except trade unionists! Striking workers were charged with breach of contract and imprisoned, with some facing trial for sedition. Often, hard labour in the prison system would be their punishment. The injustice was felt deeply, and even sung about, for years to come. The SSTUWA is a democratic organisation. What this means in practice is... ◼️ 𝗕𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗵 elections are held annually, and all members of the worksite are entitled to vote to elect their representatives. ◼️ The three senior officers, general secretary and fifteen ordinary members that make up the 𝗘𝘅𝗲𝗰𝘂𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 are elected every three years, and all financial members of the SSTUWA are entitled to vote in this election. ◼️ 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘁 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗹 representatives are elected each year at a branch level. In 2007 the 𝘊𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘎𝘢𝘱 campaign began National Close the Gap Day (NCTGD) to give schools, business and communities around Australia the opportunity to stand with First Australians in demanding health equality for all. From its humble beginnings, the third Thursday of March each year has seen NCTGD grow into a significant national day in support of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and wellbeing. In 2000 the federal government declared 21 March, National Harmony Day. Orange has often been worn to promote Harmony Day since it was first celebrated in Australia in 1999. Harmony Day is an Australian Government program that centres on the message that “Everyone belongs”, reinforcing the importance of inclusiveness to all Australians. The SSTUWA is a democratic organisation that represents public educators all over Western Australia. ◼️ 𝗘𝘅𝗲𝗰𝘂𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 consists of three senior officers and 15 Executive members who, together with the general secretary, are elected every three years. ◼️ Each worksite holds a branch election to form a 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗵, including a rep and potentially also a deputy rep, women’s contact officer, secretary and treasurer. Branches deal locally with school based issues, and have their say in the wider SSTUWA by submitting branch motions to Executive, District Council, and/or State Council. ◼️ Western Australia is divided into districts, with each district entitled to representation at 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘁 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗹 level. These councils then have a range of powers including formulating a district position on local issues and making recommendations to Executive and State Council about union policy. ◼️ 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗹 is the governing body of the SSTUWA and its supreme decision-making authority, with policy directives issued by State Council to be adhered to by all members. Meeting twice a year, State Council considers motions put forward by branches and District Councils. These decisions guide the policies and processes of the union, giving members a direct say in the union’s direction and governance. State Council comprises the senior officers, ordinary executive members, general secretary and delegates elected from each district. Annual elections for district delegates to State Council are conducted by the Australian Electoral Commission. ◼️ The SSTUWA has an active 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗲 system contributing to the governance of the union. The committees generally meet at least once a term. This week’s Teaching Tip comes from Barrie Bennett and Peter Smilanich’s book, Classroom Management: A Thinking and Caring Approach. This book, as well as other great resources from Barry Bennett are available from our website at 𝘀𝘀𝘁𝘂𝘄𝗮.𝗼𝗿𝗴.𝗮𝘂 𝗪𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 refers to what teachers say and do to maintain and enhance their social relationships with students so that students are more inclined to work with teachers rather than against them. The primary method of winning students over is the day-in and day-out demonstration of teacher interest in the personal life of the students. (p 63) 𝗣𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗯𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 refers to the strength of the relationship between students as well as between teachers and students. It’s initiation, maintenance, and enhancement is largely determined by teacher actions. 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 is a numerical term and refers to what a teacher does to insure that all kids belong – it means the teacher and the students inspect and overcome their biases related to all equity issues (racial, gender, socio-economic, special needs, etc.). Students must have the opportunity to work in designed situations that require them to not only work with all students in the class, but so that all students feel accountable and responsible to be involved and to encourage the involvement of others. 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 refers to the extent to which a student and teacher feel that their sense of self is not at risk. It is the net result of teacher and staff actions related to the previous three concepts in conjunction with the teacher’s skills of responding to student behaviours. Although winning over, cohesive bonding, inclusiveness and safe environment are presented as distinct concepts, this has been done for the purpose of clarifying the complexity of teaching. Muriel Heagney was a union activist who was passionate about winning equal pay. She spent six decades campaigning for gender equity. Muriel was born in 1885 in Melbourne and by the early 1910s had become a committed trade unionist. During the First World War she was the only woman clerk at the Defence Department by day and an ardent campaigner against conscription outside working hours. Through the 1920s and 1930s she was a prominent leader of union women and an advocate for workers’ education. This included her work for the Australian union movement in preparing submissions to the royal commissions on the basic wage in 1923 and 1927. Muriel also worked with the Clothing Trades Union on its arbitration court submissions seeking equality in the basic wage for working women. You should aim to create a learning environment that works for all students, whether they have a disability, speak English as an additional language/dialect, are a member of a minority community, come from a low-income family or have a learning difficulty. All students should have equal access to learning and the same opportunities to achieve. Superannuation means something important to unions. At its core, superannuation means that workers can retire with security and dignity. There were union campaigns for retirement schemes as far back as the 1920s. In the 1930s, the Miners’ Federation took action, including a six-week strike in NSW in 1938, to win an industry pension. However by 1984 the Building Workers Industrial Union won award-based super for its members, founding the Building Union Superannuation Scheme. In 1986, the Arbitration Commission endorsed the claim that three per cent super could be included in awards, but refused to arbitrate, so that agreements would need to be negotiated between employers and unions. After the ACTU’s National Wage Case, super entitlements started to be included in some industrial awards, and it became a universal entitlement in 1992, thanks to the hard work of unions. Employers had to pay three per cent of workers’ earnings into superannuation. This gradually increased to nine per cent and on 2 November 2011 the ACTU and its unions’ “Stand Up for Super” campaign celebrated another win for working Australians, when the Labor Government moved to increase the compulsory superannuation guarantee. According to the Australian Taxation Office, the super guarantee rose progressively from nine per cent in 2013 to 11 per cent today, and will continue to increase to 12 per cent by 1 July 2025. 𝗧𝗜𝗣 𝟱: The aesthetic appeal of a classroom is an ever evolving process. Whether you like inspirational posters and quotes, instructional posters related to the topics being explored, promoting regulation strategies or positive behaviour support (PBS) materials teaching your school’s values, the way you decorate your classroom creates a tone for the incoming students. That tone should be welcoming, supportive and safe. Don’t be afraid to change the decorations on a regular basis, linking instructional materials to what you are teaching. An important addition to the look of your classroom is to include student work samples. Publishing work in this way encourages pride in the work being done and the outcomes being achieved. Did you know that only union members get a say in their industrial conditions via the collective bargaining process? Collective bargaining was introduced in 1996, and it allows workers and their unions to negotiate directly with their employer over pay and conditions. Evidence from the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows that collective bargaining delivers better wages than individual agreements for ordinary workers. Collective bargaining is about correcting a power imbalance. By negotiating together, we can work towards greater improvements in our working conditions. #Throwback to 1949 when a number of coal workers went on strike over demands for better working provisions including long service leave (LSL) and other conditions. Coal miners were the first to secure rights to LSL in 1949, and the scheme remains one of the best in the country. Pit working conditions were harsh and change was needed. Unions in other industries followed the lead of the Miners’ Federation and also fought for LSL. 𝗧𝗜𝗣 𝟰: Organisational components can include pigeonholes, bookcases, bulletin boards and any other organisational aspects to your classroom. Locate pigeonholes where they are easily accessible by students. Pigeonholes can be used to store students’ bags, their workbooks and folders, dictionaries and textbooks. Bookshelves, crates and boxes can all be used for storage, establishing a classroom library or for easy access to classroom stationery; because we all know how often students arrive to class without the basic tools. #Throwback to 1978 in Sydney when LGBTIQA+ activists working under the banner of the “Gay Solidarity Group” organised the first Mardi Gras – a political protest. Many union activists were involved in the event. The date was set for 24 June – the anniversary month of the Stonewall Riot which is generally recognised as a key moment in the creation of the LGBTIQA+ rights movement in the United States. The protest was intended to have a serious message – but also to be a celebration. Participants had fun as they marched down Oxford Street. Marchers chanted “Out of the bars and into the streets” to encourage others to join. There was singing, dancing and general expressions of joy at being together and being able to publicly express their identity. But soon the atmosphere changed as police began to harass the marchers. Police attempted to arrest the driver of the sound truck. 𝗧𝗜𝗣 𝟯: Consideration should be given to how students’ desks are arranged in the classroom. Some options include: ◼️ Individual desks in rows. ◼️ Rows of four desks, in two or three columns, depending on the available space. ◼️ U shaped configuration. ◼️ Desks in groups of four or six, spaced around the room. Keep in mind that an effective behaviour management strategy is proximity, so ensure you have enough space to move around the room and that you can get to every desk to speak to every student in your class. Be strategic with this planning. If you have the space and resources, consider flexible seating. These arrangements cater to a wider variety of learning styles and allow students to be more comfortable while engaging in their work.
