The plantar fascia, a thick tissue supporting the foot's arch and absorbing shock, can endure forces up to 2-3 times body weight during running, yet this varies based on factors like speed, form, footwear, and surface stiffness. Understanding these elements informs smarter training and injury prevention strategies. When do you consider your self injured? We’ll dive into this in a 3 part series! Part one: The Running Injury Continuum. We’ve all used the term “niggle” or “twinge” but what does that really mean? This study was published last year looking at how runners PERCEIVE their injuries. I think it is important to emphasize that because of some of the language used. Just because you have severe pain, doesn’t mean it’s a career ending injury or that you’ll need surgery - that is how runners in this study perceived that level of pain! Why does this matter? As health care professionals, it may give us more insight as to how runners perceive their current situation and how it’s affecting them. It also highlights how important self management is to runners when things start to feel “off.” This Continuum can also help us with education to help people seek guidance sooner so a “niggle” doesn’t turn into a “short term” or “long term” injury. As a runner - it can be frustrating to not know if what you’re feeling is something that will turn into a bigger issue. Most people don’t seek professional help until they consider themselves “injured” which in this study was at the point of a “persisting” to “non-responding niggle.” I know seeking care is an investment! The internet and friends advice CAN be a great place to start, but investing in professional advice sooner rather than later can help improve outcomes (and save you money in the long run!) Next - we’ll dive into when to seek care and who to go see! Reference: Lacey A, Whyte E, O’Keeffe S, O’Connor S, Burke A, et al.
