Just finished Ninninger! And...its not as bad as I was expecting, but its still not all that great. Its a Sentai that has its moments, but is overall extremely lackluster. I'll give this Sentai credit that the family dynamic is strong...at least by the middle. Early episodes really don't use the family aspect as much as they should, which makes for some really bad episodes. However, by the middle I really do buy all these people as a loving family of Ninjas who even accept someone on the outside as family. That alone at least makes this Sentai watchable! The Youkai are pretty boring villains. Kyuuemon admittedly has an interesting backstory and there is potential for him to stand out, but ultimately he falls short of it. Maybe if he had a human form or if we got more flashbacks of him as a kid training as a ninja he could have been great, but they don't give us enough of his backstory to really make him sympathetic. And everyone else is just your typical evil-for-evil's-sake villain. The Ninningers are all hit-and-miss. Takaharu is really, REALLY annoying as this hotheaded and reckless Red who steals the spotlight way too much (at least early on and in the middle); Yakumo has his moments as a solid blue, and Nagi gets some great focus near the end. Fuuka is pretty cute and has her moments...at least once the show decided to stop making her the butt-monkey of jokes. Kasumi is a great pink as the brains of the team and I really liked her and Kinji's story from aspiring Ninja to a member of the family was a highlight of the series! Overall, Ninninger isn't the worst Sentai out there and is perfectly serviceable. The way the Last Ninja plot resolves isn't as red-centric as I was expecting, and at the very least everyone gets their moments to shine. Still...nothing really stands out about it and it really feels like a paint-by-numbers Sentai in the end.
