This Saturday, May 11th... the annual Wyomissing Trout Fishing Rodeo will kick off with registration at 8:30 AM and lines in the water at 9:00 AM. MaryJo Brown - one of the best nature and wildlife photographers in the area... will be joining us for our EARTH DAY Celebration: A Green Learning Experience on Saturday, April 20th from 10:00 AM to NOON. She’ll be showing her iconic “eagle” shot in the Parklands and will be giving away fifty bookmarks featuring the image- first come, first server. She’ll also have a few framed images of other animals that inhabit the Parklands. She’ll share the story of how scientist, Rachel Carson- in her book Silent Spring, published in1962, saved the American Bald Eagle from extinction due to exposure to DDT and giving rise to the science of ecology and Earth Day... and how efforts of other conservationists and ecologists brought the eagle populations back from near extinction. Wyomissing Creek Macroinvertebrate Inventory & Assessment As part of our EARTH DAY Celebration: A Green Learning Experience, Penn State’s Master Watershed Stewards will be leading this enrichment activity for 12-16 year-olds on Saturday afternoon - April 20th. We have two sessions set up; Session 1: 2:00 to 3:00 pm Session 2: 3:15 to 4:15 pm Limited Space Is Available - Registration is Mandatory Each session is capped at 15 participants - a wait list will be created but participation cannot be guaranteed As long as the creek depth and flow rate are safe, we will be getting in the water to collect macroinvertebrates with strainers. Afterwards we will identify what was collected and discuss how macroinvertebrates help reveal the health of the stream. We will also discuss how we can help keep our waterways clean and healthy for the benefit of wildlife and humans. With our annual Egg Hunt at the Wyomissing Hills Memorial Park and Playground just around the corner - Saturday, March 23rd - we want to ensure everyone has an egg-cellent time! Here are some guidelines to make our event fun and "egg-citing" for all participants: Staggered Start Times: Ages 1 and 2: 11:10 AM Ages 3 and 4: 11:30 AM Ages 5 and 6: 11:50 AM Ages 7 and 8: 12:10 PM Ages 9 and 10: 12:30 PM Ages 11 and 12: 12:50 PM Children under the age of 1 will have an opportunity to meet BRIAR THE BUNNY and get their photo taken with him from 11:00 to 11:30 AM... afterwards, they'll get a small chocolate bunny. EVENT GUIDELINES: Bring Your Own Basket: Each child should come prepared with their own basket. Arrive Early: Please arrive at least ten minutes before your scheduled age group start time. Age Groups: Participate in the appropriate age group as outlined. Play Nicely: Remind your child that pushing or rough-housing won't be tolerated. Hands Off Before Start: Absolutely no touching or picking up eggs before the scheduled start time. Whistle Start: We'll kick off each age group's hunt with the blowing of a whistle. Redeem for Prizes: Trade your plastic eggs at the tables under the pavilion for an additional prize. For the adults... we didn't forget about you, The Perk Up Truck will be on-site for all your coffee needs. "... Spring Has Sprung" - at least it feels like it. The early bloomers are already popping up along the Wyomissing Creek trails in the Parklands. Milky white snowdrops with their heady, honey fragrance and saffron yellow winter aconite are among just a few of the first flowers to emerge from winter soil and will bloom from February through April. Both snowdrops and aconite have an unquestionable beauty about them, but they are not just a pretty face. Both flowers play an essential role for wildlife emerging from winter hibernation and dormancy. A wide variety of pollinators, bumblebees, honeybees, flies and early butterflies emerge to head straight for their favorite spring flower. The nectar from these late winter/early spring flowers provides wildlife their first nourishment. Be sure to get out and enjoy what nature has to offer. Come join us in commemorating the fifty-first annual Wyomissing Trout Fishing Rodeo! Since its inception in 1973, this time-honored tradition has marked the arrival of spring and provided the Wyomissing youth with an opportunity to jump into the world of fishing along the picturesque Wyomissing Creek. Joseph A. Miller played a pivotal role in establishing the 8 to 80 Wyomissing Fishing Club, the driving force behind the start of the annual Trout Fishing Rodeo. There will be drawings for the "Joseph A. Miller Participation Prizes," exclusively for registered anglers. Our friends from TCO Fly Fishing will be giving a free fly fishing clinic for children on Friday evening beginning at 5 PM at the Wall. This event is particularly special for the youth of our community! It's a fantastic opportunity for kids under the age of 15 to embrace the joy of fishing. Mark your calendars for the Trout Fishing Rodeo on Saturday, May 11th. Registration kicks off at 8:30 AM, followed by the commencement of fishing at 9:00 AM. The awards ceremony is set for 11:30 AM.
