As Minister of Health, I opened thousands of new continuing care beds, including the Norwood Centre in Edmonton and the expansion of the Wing Kei Care Centre in Calgary. When I become premier, we will expand public seniors’ care: ➡️ Build at least 1500 public continuing care beds. ➡️ Invest in elder community support and home care. ➡️ Create or repurpose space for long-term care for patients requiring a lower level of care. ➡️ Establish staffing ratios, ensure staff are making a living wage and expand the number of full time positions for those working in congregate care settings. When I ran for the NDP the first time, I also ran against an incumbent, a conservative cabinet minister in what was considered a conservative stronghold. We ran on a bold policy platform of increasing corporate taxes to ensure that we protected public health care and public education. Thank you to everyone who came out to hear @nenshi speak last night. It was a full house!! A couple of things really struck me about the event. First, Naheed is a wonderful communicator. I mean, if you didn’t know that by now, you would have seen it first hand last night. Second, there were so many people there with deep, deep concerns about so many different topics. Nurses, teachers, parents, students and retirees all concerned about the lack of investment the current government is putting into our province. Lastly, there were many people talking about the divisiveness that exists in our community right now and the concerns they had around attacks on our vulnerable and the inability to have a conversation with their neighbours. But, the good news is that we heard more than one person say that they ‘needed’ that event last night. Listening to @nenshi speak and the community who showed up to ask questions gave the attendees hope. And, isn’t it nice to see that hope when there are so many concerns about our current government? Lack of housing, both market and non-market, requires smart solutions from all orders of government. I’m appalled that the UCP government is using politics to block funding from reaching municipalities in the middle of a housing crisis. Alberta tabled Bill 18 to ensure federal tax dollars are spent on priorities that matter to Albertans. #ableg #abpoli For too long, Liberal governments in Ottawa with little Alberta representation have imposed their agenda through direct federal funding agreements with provincial entities like cities and post-secondaries. #cdnpoli Albertans want their federal tax share spent on roads, housing, and infrastructure - not political virtue signaling programs. #abroads #abhousing The Provincial Priorities Act will require provincial approval for provincial entities to receive federal funding. Just like in Quebec. #abpriorities It's time federal dollars are spent in partnership with provinces on actual provincial priorities.
