The secret has been out about Eagle Springs Golf Resort in Eagle, Wisconsin seemingly for a while now, but between today's post by @dailylogoball and some chatter about it from @fried_egg_golf, one of the Midwest's finest is especially top of mind this week. Delightful quirk and charm appear around every corner of the Badger State's oldest golf course thanks to interesting glacial terrain and a set of fantastic green complexes; some of those are almost too daring to be built by any architect today, most notably the volcano green complex of the par three second - one ubiquitous enough visually to inspire a very cool secondary logo for the course. Eagle Springs has deservedly gained stature in recent years with all this attention, but the old girl still harbors her fair share of secrets; one of them, tucked away in the woods between the first green and the eighth fairway, is shown here: the rarely used (and even more rarely photographed) alternate par three second. This straightforward 127-yard drop shot actually plays a significant role in the preservation of its unique volcano counterpart; built roughly a decade ago as an alternative to skipping the second entirely for players with mobility issues who struggle to scale steep slopes, it allows the course to maintain its revenue streams from locals playing further into their golden years while also precluding any need to modify the spectacular volcano green complex, a golden goose that brings in visitors from far and wide. Sound Artist Susie Kozawa’s maternal grandfather, Masao Sakai, was born in Japan to a well-established family. He trained as a medical doctor to work in their hospital. In 1906, at 21 years old, he immigrated to the US via Seattle, Washington, to avoid an arranged marriage. Unable to practice as a doctor, Masao learned English, adopted the nickname Fred, and worked as a houseboy for some of the most influential families in California – AG Spalding – the famous baseball player and co-founder of Spalding sporting goods company, the Scripps publishing family; and LC Brand, the founder of Glendale, CA. Masao married Yuki Kawakami in 1914. Susie’s mom, Sumiko, was born two years later. Masao moved between jobs to support his rapidly growing family. At times, he farmed flowers and raised chickens. Alien Land Laws in California forbid Japanese-born people from owning farmland or holding agricultural leases for more than three years. In 1926, Masao, Yuki, and their five kids lived in San Diego. According to family histories, Masao intermittently worked for the Scripps family, sending him to local Indian communities to help villagers. Walking home one night, he was struck by a car and killed. Masao was 42. In 1929, Yuki Sakai, then 35, started Tokio Florist to support herself and her young children.
