His only goal is to inspire and empower! Meet DJ Lee, the 15-year-old founder and CEO of Socially Conscious Apparel, the fastest-growing Black-owned line of hoodies and t-shirts that pay homage to Black Panther, Kyrie Irving, and more. Based in San Diego, California, his apparel collection also features messages that address various social injustice issues that affect people of color. For example, to address police brutality he has shirts with hard-hitting, cold-chilling messages such as “Stop Killing Us” and “Don’t Shoot”. His fashion items are for both men and women and are made from a very high-quality blend of polyester and cotton. Lee, who is a 10th-grader in high school, says that he launched the business to provide a powerful platform in the world of fashion for today’s social climate. He comments, “The idea is to be able to express yourself without having to say anything. Everyone who sees you in my clothes will immediately know how woke you are. I want my supporters to be able to wear their awareness.” Lee’s collection touches on controversial subjects such as the recent breakup of Kanye West and Adidas as well as the recent NBA suspension of Kyrie Irving. It also includes shirts that celebrate HBCU graduates. Representation matters! Shaneisha Dodson, founder and CEO of a popular Black-owned retail platform for kids called Brilliant Girl, has launched the Sugamama doll, the world's first 18-inch Black superhero doll. She says that her company's goal with all of its designs is to create more representation for black girls in the toy industry. According to Shaneisha, when she was growing up, she was not able to find many dolls that represented her or carried the cultural characteristics of her people. In a mission to change that narrative, Brilliant Girl has now launched a line of dolls that carry exciting backstories and come with various clothing options to make playtime interactive and fun. She comments, “All superheroes don't wear capes, sometimes they wear aprons and eat cookies.” With our dolls, we hope to give young girls the power to love themselves, to believe that can achieve the unimaginable, and to see themselves as the superheroes they are. Girls idolize their dolls and finding dolls that represent their true essence and the beauty of their culture is amazing.

Winning 🙌🏾 Kathy Davis, an entrepreneur who is now in her 50s, is the owner of a Brentwood, Tennessee-based Mayweather Boxing + Fitness franchise, a high-intensity fitness center experience developed by Floyd Mayweather himself. She launched in 2019 right before the pandemic began, but she was still able to dodge her way to success. Growing up, Davis has always been active in multiple sports and physical activities. She worked as a group fitness instructor before running a personal training business for nearly 20 years. Over the years, Davis has tried bodybuilding, spin classes, marathons, and triathlons, but she loved boxing above all. That's why when she and some friends saw an advertisement for the Mayweather Boxing + Fitness franchise on social media, they thought it was a great opportunity to open one especially since the brand name already speaks for itself.

This is a big win! Rod Johnson and Parnell Cezar, the founders of Blk & Bold, the first Black-owned nationally distributed coffee brand in the U.S., have collaborated with Marvel Studios' Black Panther: Wakanda Forever to create a coffee collection featuring the film characters in its packaging. They say that they are proud of the historic licensing deal that they were able to secure with what is expected to be the biggest movie release of the year. Blk & Bold is now available in more than 7,000 retail locations. With their licensing deal with Marvel, they have released two new coffee flavors, "Rise & Grnd" and "Smoove Operator". Both are being sold with Wakanda Forever-themed packaging. It features the film's characters including Shuri, Okoye, Nakia, and M'Baku. Johnson, who is a co-founder of Blk & Bold, said that he has been a fan of Black Panther since its first film. Their collaboration has been exciting for them as they believe there is a natural connection between the values of their company and the Black Panther films.

This is a huge win for the community! Mel Carter and Kevin "Coach K" Lee, who are top music executives and entrepreneurs, are also venturing into the food industry as they become owners of 32 different Bojangles restaurants. The two are part owners of Melanbo, a franchise development company that has signed a deal with the popular restaurant, making them the largest Black-controlled franchisee in Bojangles' history. Carter and Coach K along with their ownership group Melanbo will partner with Bojangles, the popular restaurant known for its chicken, biscuits, and tea. The agreement involves developing 14 new franchises in Atlanta in addition to their 18 existing franchises in Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. Now with a total of 32 restaurants, the acquisition and size of the multi-unit development agreement makes Melanbo the largest Black-controlled franchisee in Bojangles' system. Both parties are looking forward to the partnership.

When small businesses succeed, so does the economy! After nearly a year of negotiations and renegotiations, entrepreneur Tony A. Reimonenq Jr, his wife, and his three sons have purchased a 20-unit strip mall in the Oak Grove community of Hattiesburg, Mississippi that they will transform into a local version of Tulsa, Oklahoma’s Historic Greenwood District also known as the original Black Wall Street. With this purchase, the family has become one of the state’s arguably three percent of African Americans to have ever independently brokered a million-dollar deal. The establishment will be named Greenwood Plaza, and it is the second major commercial expansion of their family-owned firm, Reimonenq & Co LLC. The purchase is another step closer to the Reimonenq family's mission of recasting the historic Black Wall Street of Tulsa, Oklahoma’s Greenwood District as well as the unsung Black Wall Street of Mound Bayou, Mississippi. The family wants to follow suit in empowering and equipping individuals to become entrepreneurs. “I’ve always had a heart to help others succeed, but to do that I first had to succeed,” says Tony, who is CEO of the family business. “I’ve dreamed of having a location from which others like myself can work and draw inspiration from Tulsa’s Greenwood District.”
