Ardor watches was founded in 1902 as part of the Venus group of watch brands in La-Chaux-de-Fonds. The factory was known under the name “Paul Schwarz-Etienne”. Later the brand was known as “Les Fils de Paul Schwarz-Etienne”. No watch was ever sold under this name though. Paul Arthur Schwarz and his wife Olga Etienne founded Schwarz Etienne and was conceived as a manufacturer of mechanical movements with production centred on several different marques under its umbrella. The following “brand names” have been registered at the “Eidgenssisches Amtfr Geistiges Eigentum” for Schwarz-Etienne amongst others; Ardor, Astin, Astro, Certus, Denis, Le Phare, Gerwa, Haga, Innig, Orfeus, Synthetic & notably Venus. Always a dynamic, innovative company, Schwarz Etienne was taken over by the sons of its founders in 1940, gradually expanding its activities into Europe, as well as in Asia and the Middle East. Diversifying its production during the 1970s and ‘1980s, partly as a response to the general crisis engulfing the watch industry, the company made the decision to return to its ethos and core savoir-faire in 1985: primarily the creation of movements and timepieces. During this period, Schwarz Etienne developed its own marque and distinct collections, gradually becoming recognised as a fully-fledged manufacturer.
