Six down, six more to go. I enjoy working in series as it allows me the time to test an idea. Twelve iterations of a core theme is a good number. So far, I’ve completed six paintings in what is an extension of the SILENCE collection of abstract oil pastel drawings I began earlier this year. I have maintained a visual consistency in the figure-ground balance I want from panel to panel, with each feeling pretty resolved compositionally. The variety of organic shapes and implied armature have a “family” appearance and no repetition. The impactful colors contrast the “custom” black I mix for each painting. I love the “flakeboard” surface because it retains its complex rawness even under multiple layers of translucent acrylic glaze. I know there is much more to explore as I paint the next six panels in this series. For my recent painting, "Of or Pertaining to Thunder," I especially like the way the flakeboard surface adds an embedded dimension. The rough composite of the wooden scraps makes the flakeboard feel like brushstrokes. This surface allows me to work the image and color in thin veils of acrylic paint; the net result, in my opinion, is both simple and complex. This combination of strong forms and an articulated background can be traced back to my work in drawing and painting for years. 99% finished. While using a similar collage approach for a “quartet” of drawings, I explored more compositional possibilities, using all nine drawings from this recent monochrome series. I further rotated images and shifted them from left to right, looking for the best visual connections. The outcome? The three-by-three array feels pretty good and, at times, excellent. Arranging the drawings adjacent to each other expressed the open gray, negative shape. Two black shadow shapes talk to each other, and in turn, the gray joins the conversation. If I’m correct, there are 162 mathematical variations on this composition. However, there are far fewer that work visually. Here, I’ve narrowed it down to three. Do you have a preference? 1,2 or 3? As a further step in my latest series, I wanted to see if these shadow shapes started speaking to each other organically when in close proximity. Not originally planned as a quartet of drawings, I noticed I could shuffle them, even flip them vertically, so they are upside down in some cases.
