Synopsis for “Pushback Book 4” In Star City, Prometheus is in a firefight with the police, when Green Arrow shoots him, forcing him to drop his weapons. Prometheus pulls the arrows out, but collapses. Green Arrow fires what seems to be a killing shot, but Prometheus is pulled out of the way in the nick of time by Hush. A policeman tries to stop him, but Hush throws the cop off the building. Green Arrow fails to catch him with a parachute arrow, and the cop lands on a car far below, dying on impact. Safely away, Prometheus threatens to shoot Hush unless he explains his actions. Hush diagnoses the extent of Prometheus’ injuries and invites him to help his efforts to kill Batman. Prometheus agrees, then collapses. Green Arrow finds Hush as he carries the unconscious Prometheus away and swears he will not leave this city alive. He fires an arrow, causing an explosion. Batman arrives and sees the carnage left by Hush and Prometheus. Green Arrow calls out Batman for not contacting him when he knew what was going on and blames his refusal to communicate for the cop’s death. Batman says this doesn’t concern him. Green Arrow gets angry, and shoots at Batman as he’s leaving. The two fight. Green Arrow ends the fight by walking away and saying he is going to talk to the cop’s family. Batman follows him to the cop’s house where he admits Green Arrow was right. He returns to Gotham, and Green Arrow tells the cop’s wife and son what happened. Batgirl uses a mirror to locate the shooter and heads up to the rooftop to confront him. He manages to get the jump on her, though, and Catwoman has to rescue her. The shooter flees with Gordon’s notebook, but Batgirl placed a tracer on it and they follow him to a warehouse. Catwoman tells Batgirl she needs the notebook to rescue her friend Elena, who is an illegal immigrant being used as a slave by Vassily Davidovitch. Catwoman wanted to use James Gordon’s notes to start a gang war and free her. Catwoman walks into the warehouse and pretends to make a deal with Vassily. When he orders Elena brought out, she signals Batgirl to cut the lights. In the dark, she takes out his men, while outside Anatoly attacks Batgirl. The fight goes badly for Batgirl and Catwoman. Vassily leaves with Elena and gives the order to blow up the warehouse. They barely escape in time. Batman and Batgirl spy on Vassily Davidovitch as he makes a deal with Riddler to decode Gordon’s notebook in exchange for something in a suitcase. Vassily offers Elena to the Riddler, at which point Catwoman bursts through the window to save her friend. Batman tells Batgirl to stay back as Catwoman fights Anatoly, but Batgirl dives in to save her when Anatoly has her at his mercy. Synopsis for “A New Dawn, Part One” Inside the Gotham Museum of Antiquities, the director is going over the museum’s finances at sunrise when a man dressed as an Egyptian pharaoh gouges his eyes, while telling a riddle related to light. Later, at sunset, a wealthy businessman returns home, only to be suffocated to death by the same assailant, with another riddle, this time related to darkness. Batman and Commissioner Gordon visit Arkham Asylum to see the Riddler, who they suspect is the perpetrator. However, the Riddler denies any involvement, instead offering to help catch the killer in exchange for freedom. Batman turns him down, but the Riddler predicts when and where the next victim will be murdered. Still, Batman refuses. In the Batcave, Alfred assists Batman in finding the connection between the two victims. At GCPD Headquarters, Batman hands Gordon a list of the museum’s board of trustees, forecasting that the most senior member will be the next to die. Batman rushes to the house, but is too late, as the Riddler’s prognostication has come true. However, the intruder is still there and attacks Batman, giving him a riddle about cleanliness and vowing to vanquish the Dark Knight so that “the one true god” can bring daylight to the city. As soon as the GCPD arrives, the costumed criminal vanishes, like mist in the sunlight. Synopsis for “Rocket Scientist” Dieter Ganz was an unlucky thief who spent most of his early years in Blackgate Penitentiary for little robberies that leave him no profit at all. After ten years in Blackgate he decides that when he goes out, he starts anew. Honest work for honest money. Unlucky as he is, two criminals approach him and lure him into a jewelry robbery. When Ganz realizes what was it all about, it was too late and he find himself driving the thug’s car with the police chasing them. Batman knew that one of the thieves was a man named Cameron Nash and that he was also a ruthless killer. He and Robin listened to the police radio and knew where the thieves were going. They started to chase them but the thieves escaped using a water conduit. Batman knew were that conduit will take them and he and robin went to the place. The thieves find themselves facing Batman at the place that Batman has told Robin. The three thieves started to run and entered an industrial laundry. There Batman managed to capture Nash. The second thief tried to hide inside a dryer but was caught inside it and spinning helpless. Batman tried to catch Ganz but he accidentally fell into a pile of clothes and was able to escape from Batman and Robin. When it was over, Batman told Robin not to worry about the thug that escaped because that kind of men always appears in another hit and so they might catch him the next time he appears. Superman, in his civilian guise of Clark Kent, is going to interview actor Ronald Jason, however Jason suddenly splashes him with a chemical that burns off his clothes revealing that Kent is really Superman. Jason however, reveals that he is an alien named Dur from a planet in the Sirius system. He explains that on his world the Tontor-1 (equivalent of a president on Earth) was assassinated, and in order to protect himself he teleported himself to Earth, however he believes that he is being pursued by an enemy agent from his home world and sought out Superman for protection. Superman then flies Dur to his Fortress of Solitude where he’d be safe. Meanwhile, in the Batcave, Batman is visited by another alien named Tiron, who tells Batman that Dur is a criminal who escaped to Earth. The two hop in the Batplane, but when Batman suggests that they seek out Superman, Tiron tells him that he is aware that Dur has tricked Superman into helping him. While Batman and Supergirl are otherwise preoccupied, Superman flies to Gotham City and recruits the help of Batgirl to help him protect Dur. Synopsis for “Electric City, Part Three: Systemic Shock” Despite Batman and Robin’s best efforts, Galvan successfully kills Driscoll with a long-range electric bolt, and flees to pursue his next target: Commissioner Gordon. This information is quickly relayed to the rest of the police department, who - along with the Electrocutioner - quickly rush to police headquarters. In spite of the looming danger and Detective Essen’s warnings, Commissioner Gordon refuses to vacate police headquarters. Resigned to the Commissioner’s pride and courage, Detective Essen chooses to stay in the building as well. Soon after, Galvan arrives, with Batman, Robin, and the Electrocutioner not far behind. Detective Essen attempts to protect the Commissioner from Galvan, but her revolver proves useless against the electric field produced by Galvan’s equipment. At that moment, Batman intervenes. While he keeps Galvan occupied, Robin rushes to a nearby firehose, intending to short out Galvan’s equipment. The Electrocutioner attempts to stop him, determined to kill Galvan instead of leaving matters to “the bleeding-heart courts”, but a disgusted Robin quickly beats the so-called crimefighter unconscious. Robin then aims the firehose at Galvan, but discovers to his horror that it has been disconnected. Nevertheless, Robin distracts Galvan long enough for Batman to remove Galvan’s battery pack, leaving Galvan completely helpless. Batman is initially furious at Robin for taking an unnecessary risk, but quickly apologizes and congratulates his quick thinking. Synopsis for “Mimsy Were the Borogoves” When Doctor Kirk Langstrom, the scientist sometimes known as “Man-Bat,” is kidnapped, and a mysterious clue is left behind at his house, The Batman already knows he will not have an easy night ahead of him. The clue is a cryptic Lewis Carroll quote, and Batman visits Arkham Asylum to locate Jervis Tetch, “The Mad Hatter,” who has apparently escaped, and kidnapped his most recent social worker as well, “Jeffrey Yorkes.” When Batman does find him, the Hatter has already injected his social worker with a cocktail version of one of Langstrom’s serums. Instead of only Man-Bat DNA, it also contains the DNA of both Killer Croc, and Solomon Grundy; transforming Yorkes into a terrible dragon-like hybrid, perfectly fitting the bill to play Lewis Carroll’s “The Jabberwock,” and wreak havoc upon Gotham City for the Hatter’s amusement. After rescuing Langstrom and returning to the cave for the Man-Bat antidote, Batman is able to revert Yorkes to his original form and save him before he plummets to his death. As the Hatter is being dragged away, Yorkes insists that he not be dealt with harshly this time, no matter how bad his actions seemed; he believes that the Hatter had actually been trying to help him. Prior to his experience, he had been unable to even comprehend Tetch, let alone understand how he got that way, despite his best efforts. Synopsis for “No Law and a New Order, Part Two: Strategy” Following No Man’s Land #1, one of Oracle’s informants has told her about finding a spray painted bat on a wall. Although this informant is usually reliable, she just doesn’t believe that Batman would resort to using spray paint to tag his territory. She also wonders if he will try to contact her if he actually is back. In Blue Boy territory Commissioner Gordon is surviving with his cops. He is informed that they have liberated another neighborhood, and he himself uses spray paint to tag the area as under their protection. Despite some objections, he declares that they will next liberate Old Gotham and their old police headquarters. Instead of mounting a frontal assault against the Loboys, he says that they will start a war between the gang and the Street Demonz. When their ranks have been thinned, the Blue Boys will attack and take back the area. Gordon has an ulterior motive, in that his daughter, Barbara, still lives in the area, however no one objects to his plan. Later, Gordon is planting seeds in his garden while talking about the stresses of No Man’s Land with his wife, Sarah. Batman wants to make an impression in presence of all the low-lifes of Gotham City and that is the perfect occasion. Batman punches Penguin and breaks his nose. Then, Batman tells Penguin that he will be the one to take down his champion in exchange for the innocent people that Penguin is holding as prisoners. Penguin agrees but with the condition that Batman must take down not only Dozer but all of the Penguin’s henchmen. Without many options left, Batman agrees. He manages to take Dozer down easily but that is just the first of many more fighters ready to fight him. Meanwhile, the Gotham City Police Department receives news of something happening at the Xhosa and Wreckers territory and when they arrive at the scene they find most of the gangs beaten and killed. Synopsis for “Home Sweet Home” In a neighborhood of Gotham City, the Zsasz gang is fighting the Croc gang and Batgirl tries to put an end to the endless violence but she is outnumbered and must flee from the scene to save herself. The gang war is taking place outside one of the few standing houses in all of Gotham and inside the house lives William Riley; also called “Sarge” due to his time in the United States Army. Riley is an old man who didn’t move out of Gotham when the city was evacuated because he couldn’t leave the place he built years ago and loves dearly, even in the deteriorated state it is now. When the Zsasz gang beat the Croc gang, one of the Zsasz men tries to tag Riley’s house but Sarge comes out and stops the crook. Mr. Zsasz learns of Riley’s act of defiance and tells his gang to take Riley out of the house and outside into the street. Mr. Zsasz demands that Riley pay a tribute to him by giving him all his food supplies and without much choice, Riley lets them take everything they find in the kitchen. When it is all done, Riley goes to the hidden shelter built in the basement of his house, where he kept all sort of supplies, happy to know that Zsasz didn’t know about it. As days pass, Riley remembers the good times when he and his wife lived happily in their home and how with time it went from bad to worse. Riley also remembered the times during World War II where he witnessed a lot of death and misery and he compared some of that events with the situation in No Man’s Land. Synopsis for “Assembly Redux” At his hideout, Joker is watching the news and learns that there has been negotiations in Washington, D.C. about the reopening of Gotham City. Lucius Fox is interviewed by the press and tells the media that there isn’t a resolution yet. Elsewhere, Catwoman delivers the discs she had stolen from Hardcases Inc. to Batman, who notices that there is something wrong with Catwoman and asks her to take care of herself. Catwoman does her best to show him that she is doing fine, even when she isn’t. Batman goes to Oracle’s Watchtower to give Oracle the discs and finally finds out who was the people behind the scenes in Gotham. Oracle discovered that there has been at least 300 tons of construction material moved into Gotham. It is clear that someone is preparing to rebuild the city. Synopsis for “Personal Effects” Bruce Wayne is at the Gotham Gentlemen’s Club where Councilman Waldemar is boasting that during the last plague (Contagion) he made a lot of money by stealing an antidote on its way to a hospital and then selling it to the highest bidder. The Councilman placed the only evidence of the planned antidote shipment in a safety deposit box. But the bank building got destroyed during the earthquake. Batman’s interest is piqued and with the help of Oracle he is able to find the bank vault, but it has been completely looted. Oracle gets nervous and Batman is aware that this is because she had a deposit box in that vault as well. A first lead brings Batman to the Penguin. But according to him, none other than Stuart Bentley (who also was present at the Gentlemen’s Club when Councliman Waldemar told his story) might have gotten his hands on the papers stored in the bank vault. Now Batman has to rush out quickly because Cobblepot already sent out killers to take care of Bentley. In the end, Batman is able to stop the assassins and recover the papers he looked for. That also included Oracle’s documents and Batman returned them to her without taking a look at them. Oracle is thankful for that, but she still tells Batman what this is about. The document actually is a letter from Barbara’s mother explaining that James Gordon could indeed be Barbara’s birth father. Barbara just took the letter from her mother before it ever got to James. Batman is surprised that she never told James about that. Oracle feels pushed and argues about how Batman is not acknowledging Nightwing as family although he raised him, but Batman does not react. Synopsis for “Justice League: Part Two” At the crime lab of the Central City Police Department, Barry Allen is arguing with Director Singh because the latter ordered him to leave a case. The reason is because their chief wants them all working on the “Flash case”: They must find out everything about the vigilante named “the Flash”, including his secret identity. Of course, the CCPD is unaware that Barry Allen is the Flash. Back at the fight between Superman and Batman, the Man of Steel points out that Batman’s utility belt is empty, leaving him without any means of defense against him, as nothing Batman used so far on him has worked. Superman charges against Batman and crushes him against a wall. He then starts interrogating the Dark Knight, demanding to know where the mysterious boxes that have been appearing over the last few days come from and what are they for. He is told that she was watching the TV news; and when she spotted a report about a winged monster terrorizing people in downtown D.C., she took off. Synopsis for “Justice League: Part Six” In the middle of the Parademon assault, a writer named David is trying to save his family, wishing for some help. His prayer is seemingly answered by a set of green fireworks on the horizon. The fireworks are part of the Justice League’s plan to fight Darkseid. On Apokolips, Bruce Wayne sneaks through the building he is in, finding a pair of superbeings discussing the invasion of the Multiverse in search of Darkseid’s daughter, who was apparently kidnapped. The superbeings have Superman tied down before them, and they plan to clone him as part of the next generation of Parademons. On Earth, Cyborg uses his new machinery to tap into the Mother Box network. By saying the word, he is able to suddenly overload the system, causing teleport holes to appear all over the area - and on Apokolips. This shocks the two beings torturing Superman, and Batman uses the moment to free Superman, before the two escape back to Earth through the Boom Tubes. They try to trap Darkseid on the other side of a Boom Tube, but he grabs Superman. With seconds to spare, Cyborg works out how to shut down the network, seemingly killing Darkseid. Wonder Woman returns to the new Paradise City where she learns that her daughter Lara has once again visited the Fortress of Solitude to meet with her father, Superman. Lara talks with her father who has frozen himself in ice. Upon closer inspection, Lara notices the bottle city of Kandor has given a distress signal. Once again back in Gotham, Ellen Yindel is alone on the roof of GCPD, pondering Batman’s returns while viewing the neglected bat-signal. An officer reports that Batman is about to arrested, and she smiles. At the chase, Batman has veered off into an alley and ditched the motorcycle he was using. Cops quickly surround him and beat him with nightsticks. A cop notices unusual features of the Batman, but before he can say what, he’s knocked unconscious. Yindel gets on the scene and unmasks the beaten Batman, who turns out to be Carrie Kelly. Synopsis for “The Hand from Nowhere” This story is reprinted from Batman #130. Batman and Robin, called in on an apparent crank call, discover that a giant green hand controlled by two green-faced figures who appear to be aliens is actually ripping the roof off the Gotham Zinc Works so they may loot it. The aliens, who let drop the information that they are wearing translators that can interpret correctly any language used to them, easily fend off Batman and Robin with the giant hand and appear to return with it to another dimension. The hand and the aliens commit two more robberies, ostensibly for materials they need to open an even large inter-dimensional portal. When Batman shouts a warning to them in Eskimo language and they fail to respond, he deduces the whole thing to be a hoax. He and Robin, following a huge truck which bears the hand, trace it back to the hideout of Superman’s foe Luthor, who has set up the robberies of relatively cheap material in order to cover for his real objective, the theft of a fortune in platinum. Penguin takes King Pebble to his hideout in a remote castle, where he has found a maid, who tries to protect the king from Penguin’s foul plays. Meanwhile, Batman and Robin investigate and locate the Penguin’s hideout. The Duo break into the castle and they try to rescue the King, but they are tricked by one of Penguin’s pets and they fall for a trap. The maid tries to protect Batman, but she is also overwhelmed by the Penguin and his henchmen. The Penguin then places the three of them in a deadly trap and Batman realizes that the maid is none other than Talia. Batman and Robin manage to break free from the trap and they finally confront the Penguin, stopping his evil scheme. Unfortunately, Batman also learns that Talia was involved in the scheme because she wanted to steal any treasure from the King and use it to free her father and rebuild his empire. However, at that moment, Bruce is out as Batman, tracking down a street gang that has kidnapped an innocent woman and after a brief encounter, Batman saves the young lady. Synopsis for “Ecstasy” Four drug addicts on the street attack a driving vehicle and the driver turns the vehicle around, in an attempt to run them over. Batman shows up in time and stops the driver from killing the junkies. However, the man behind the wheel is clearly unstable as he keeps hearing voices in his head. The man steps out of the car and, thinking that he needs no trouble with Batman or the authorities, decides to give away his vehicle to the junkies as a gift. Batman can’t do much after this shocking turn of events and he stands in the middle of the street as the junkies take the vehicle and the former owner walks away. Just a few seconds afterwards, another man appears and stops the junkies from driving away in the car, pointing a gun at them. Batman confronts the man and the junkies are forced to stop the car. At that moment, the previous owner of the vehicle, who is still nearby, decides to pull the plug and a bomb that he has placed inside the car, blows with the unsuspecting junkies inside, killing them instantly. Batman has to stop fighting the man as the explosion distracts them long enough to realize they have made a mistake. Batman learns that the man who tried to stop the car is Joe Potato, a private detective who was hired to stop a man called Ed Hallen from blowing up the drug trade in Gotham. Synopsis for “Vanishing Angels & Sudden Death” The story starts with Jean-Paul Ludovic Valley, acting as Azrael, confronting Carleton LeHah. Lehah draws a modified firearm, which he uses to shoot Azrael multiple times, tearing through his bullet-proof vest. Azrael manages to escape, but not before injuring Lehah. Azrael falls into the street, landing in the middle of the Gotham City Founder’s Day Parade. He lands on a horse, which he rides to safety, though he accidentally injures several people, killing four, and causes a riot in his escape. Ignoring offers of help, Azrael abandons his equipment and stumbles, bloody and bleeding, to the apartment of his son, Jean-Paul Valley. Ludovic manages to detail to his son the previous events, and give some parting instructions, before dying. Jean-Paul is distraught. Meanwhile, Bruce Wayne is discussing the nature of the riot and its cause with his loyal butler, Alfred Pennyworth. They examine a bullet riddled bullet-proof vest found near the scene of the incident, and Bruce notes that weapons dealer Carleton Lehah owns a penthouse near the scene of the incident. Batman Shadow of the Bat - issue 31 (1994) Zero Hour Newsstand Edition . Synopsis for “The Battling Butler!” In the middle of Zero Hour, Batman and Robin arrest a man who doesn’t understand why he’s robbing himself. When they return to the Batcave, they meet Alfred Beagle, an alternate version of Alfred the butler. The new Alfred begins acting as their new butler. Meanwhile, Batman and Robin track down a group of hypnotists who are hypnotizing criminals into giving them their loot. Although the Dynamic Duo defeat all of the hypnotized thugs, they are injected with the hypnotic serum themselves. Although the criminals intend to force Batman and Robin to jump off the top of the building, they are interrupted by Alfred, who had followed them, and inadvertently distracts them with his clumsiness long enough for Batman to shake the effects of the serum. Batman defeats the criminals and shakes Robin out of the effects of the serum. Catwoman got away with his cape and cowl, the source of his power, as well his car and the year’s worth of loot he had stashed in the trunk. He punches his prisoner, a member of the Council of Three, across the face and damns the Council for hiring her. Cat-Man calls his panthers Khan and Hun to his side, and they run off in pursuit of Catwoman. Ratcatcher currently has Catwoman and Batman surrounded by the army of super-intelligent rats he’s bred. He tells them that Gotham City is going to die tonight, and there’s nothing they can do to stop it. He sends his rat at them, and Batman orders Catwoman to shield her eyes as he throws a flash grenade. Batman runs towards Ratcatcher, tackling him. He has to take out Ratcatcher to disperse his rat army and prevent him from using the poison he’s stolen to wipe out the city. Catwoman tries to leave, but rats gnaw the rope of her grappling gun, breaking it. She falls back to the ground as Batman breaks Ratcatcher’s device and believes he has freed the rats from his control. Batman - issue 217 (1969) . Synopsis for “One Bullet Too Many!” Dick Grayson has finally graduated high school and is bound to leave for college. Bruce Wayne and Alfred bid him farewell as he leaves for Hudson University, both knowing that Batman and Robin will have to go their separate ways for awhile. After Dick is gone, Bruce reveals to Alfred that they must begin a new way of life for themselves. He proposes that they move out of Wayne Manor, leaving the Batcave behind, and station themselves in a penthouse above the Wayne Foundation building. He also plans to reestablish the fearful trademark of the “old Batman”, to strike terror into the hearts of the new breed of gangsters hiding behind the curtains of respectable citizens and big “legitimate” corporations. As part of the new trend, Bruce creates the “Victims, Inc. Program” (VIP), dedicated to helping victims of the underworld. The name is taken from a series of newspaper articles written by Marla Manning, a reporter and feature writer. Her latest article tips Bruce off to his first “victim”, Dr. Susan Fielding, a pediatrician whose partner and husband, Jonah, was shot dead recently by a gangster. With Susan’s help, Batman manages to deduce the identity of the killer, who took Jonah’s life because he was tending to an ex-partner whom “Stub” Martel, the murderer, shot earlier. Batman catches a slug from Martel in the process, and Susan Fielding removes it from his arm.
