Beyond founding the first and only bomba y plena band in the region, he serves as our co-founder and CEO of Puerto Rico Distillery, the only pitorro distillery in the DMV region Ángel is a mentor to many and works tirelessly to create community and share his tradition and culture with all. It’s National Bootlegger’s Day! A bootlegger back in the Prohibition era was someone who made, transported, or sold illegal alcohol. January 17, 1920, marked the start of national prohibition where all but ONE state refused to enforce the law. During the 1920s, Maryland became the “Free State” by refusing to pass legislation enforcing Prohibition…a bootlegger’s paradise. Although we make pitorro legally here in Maryland…it is Puerto Rican-style moonshine rum, so we have a deep respect and appreciation for the history of illegal spirits and their transporters!
