He says, 'I wanted to get into something medical but didn't want to deal with blood or teeth.' Martin ended up choosing a clean profession that lets him interact with clients on a personal level, so he studied optometry. 'I like that we have fun with our clients and lots of variety compared to other medical fields,' Martin shares. 'We get to mix it up with retail and fashion, which makes my life a lot more interesting.' He says his work can make quite a significant impact on people's lives and well-being. With a simple set of glasses, optometrists can create substantial lifestyle changes without a need for invasive surgery. When an exciting job offer came up in 2015, the young man decided to move to South Australia and start a position in Port Augusta. 'It was a great experience for my personal and professional growth,' Martin shares. By doing local and outreach clinic work to places like Coober Pedy, Roxby Downs and Kimba, he interacted with people he would have otherwise never met. Another opportunity came up in 2018 when his employer decided to purchase a practice in Victor Harbor, and Martin was quick to stick his hand up for the job. 'It has been a great sea and lifestyle change for me,' he says, 'I have never lived anywhere like Victor.' 'Victor Harbor just suits me,' says Martin, 'I really enjoy getting out there, and by only travelling 15 minutes, you are pretty much out in the sticks, able to get away and relax and recharge.' One of his Go-to places is Deep Creek Conservation Park, with various incredible hikes going to the ocean and cliff faces. Great campsites without phone reception allow visitors to live in the present, and Martin appreciates that. 'It is my great escape because you can hike there for seven hours without seeing another person.' Being involved in sports such as netball and cricket throughout her life meant Jess always had a strong support network. “After finishing high school, I had the vision of going to the city to do art school,” she shares, “but my friendships and this great community down here drew me back.” Victor has always just felt like home. Jess’ now-husband Cameron has also been a local his entire life, and once the two decided to start a family, they were grateful to have their family and friends around. The couple and their children, Charlie, 10, and Ollie, 6, live a few houses down from the fire station — nice and close for part-time firefighter Cameron who works for the MFS. After working in hospitality and as an SSO in the Yankalilla school for years, Jess Lintern missed a creative outlet. Looking for some change, the young woman got a job at Coastal Habitat Furniture seven years ago, shortly after a girlfriend had suggested her to the owners. “A couple of years in, I started a short course in interior design and styling through TAFE SA, and it ignited a spark within me,” the 32-year-old shares. Jess continued to do a diploma in interior design and is currently working towards it whilst also being a part-owner of the furniture store. Apart from a seven-months-hiatus travelling around England working in a fancy restaurant as a barista, the young woman could never stay away from Victor and has not left since returning home in 2012. Upon her return, De-Ani says she ‘busted her ass working 80 hours a week in hospitality doing morning, lunch and dinner shifts’ but pondered what to do with her life during the quieter winter months. After a friend suggested she should look into beauty school, De-Ani started a certificate 4 at TAFE Noarlunga as she always enjoyed giving massages and doing nails for others. Over three years, she completed her Diploma in beauty therapy and specialised in spa treatments. Through a sequence of fateful coincidences and thanks to her popular skillset, De-Ani scored a job with Fleurieu Health Service as an in-house masseuse and made many great connections locally. When the role was discontinued due funding cuts, the passionate young local talked to her insurance and decided to start offering her services from home. ‘It all began in 2014 with a borrowed massage bed and one wax pot, and look where I am today,’ says De-Ani proudly about SOMA Health and Beauty, even though she never imagined doing anything like it. With a group of 14, some volunteers, casual-, part-time and full-time staff, the 56-year-old local runs the popular tourist attraction seven days a week, taking visitors to beautiful Granite Island via the Causeway. The original 1997 building of the Victor Harbor Tramway is solid brick and was initially designed without a shopfront. By using the actual shell of the original building, redesigning it and adding glass doors and windows, the team was able to add a merchandise store to the front, and an office, kitchen and staff room out back. ‘There is a place for people to come in, ask questions, and learn about the history of the tram now, even when the tram is out,’ says Meg. ‘All the staff came together to paint the outside of the building ready for the official opening, and we can’t wait for everyone to see it.’ There is plenty of change in the air. One hundred sixty metres of rail have been replaced on Granite Island, and 43 million dollars were invested into a brand-new causeway opened in December 2021, with the old causeway. ‘This area is transforming right now,’ shares Meg, ‘it is an exciting journey seeing it all come together.’ The Horse Tram Authority is looking forward to soon adding new stables and a VIP centre to their offerings to show people how to train a horse and get it on the tram.
