The beach at La Dogana in Chiarone is just five minutes drive down the coast from Capalbio. It's right next to our favorite Ultima Spiaggia, and they're both lovely. The water is clear and fresh, the sand fine and golden, and they're both flanked by miles of free beach in eaither direction if you've got all your own stuff and want a bit more quiet and privacy. They're both charming because Dogana's wide, shady patios and Ultima's buildings have been built with wood which is now weathered and aged by the sea breezes and weather, so it's all very rustic and authentic feeling. The deepest dive you can do into the ancient history of the Maremma is at the archeological park of Vulci, east of Capalbio. Vulci was the largest city and the wealthiest and most influencial of the twelve tribes of Etruscan civilization. They traded extensively with the Sardinians, co-founded ancient Rome, and ruled a large part of the Maremma until finally defeated by the now Roman Empire in 280BC. The archeological park here features numerous tombs, residences, arches, and temples, the oldest dating back even further to the Bronze age, and many precious and important artifacts are housed in the nearby archeological museum housed in the medieval castle next to the park overlooking the Fiori river, built next to the ancient Devil's bridge crossing the gorge. The gorgeous Cala del Gesso cove on the western coast of Argentario is one of the prettiest little rocky beaches on the promotory, along with Cacciarella further north, Cannelle further south, and Isoletto, Acqua Dolce, and Lunga in the south, closer to Porto Ercole. The Maremma is a unique region with a remarkably diverse ecosystems; from the rocky coastlines and sandy beaches, and inland across the rich famlands in the valleys and hillsides, and on and up to the thick wooded forests and mountains. The road inland and to the north of Capalbio, for instance, crosses a beautiful valley on the road up to Sgrillozzo, and is a terrific introduction to the hinterland before crossing over to beautiful Manciano and then down to the beautiful winding Fiora river to the east. Orbetello is the Big City; the largest town in the region, 15 minutes drive up the highway, and the place to go if you want a night out after a day at the beach. It's still tiny, you can easily walk from one end of it to the other in 10 minutes, but it's bustling with shops, cafes, bars, a big cheap supermarket, restaurants, fancy boutiques, banks, pharmacies, book shops, newsagents, and gelaterias! The island of Giglio is to the west of Argentario, a short boat ride from the ferry service at Porto Santo Stefano on Argentario, and a perfect day trip. The island is gorgeous, with a small population nestled in three small port towns surrounded by lush vegetation, large pine forest, vineyards and olive groves, and rocky granite coastlines. The beaches are gorgeous, the air pristine, and the local food unique and distinctive. Giglio has been inhabited since the stone age, was an important Etruscan military base, and under the Romans it thrived as hub of commercial activity connecting maritime trade between various provinces and territories. In the middle ages it was ruled by Pisa, then Florence, and was attacked constantly by Saracen pirates, including a raid in 1544 when more than half the population were deported as slaves. The beaches along the coast south of Orbetello are dotted with lovely establishments with cafes, bars, showers, bathrooms, and umbrella and deckchair hires with parking nearby. But if you really want to get away from that, and everybody else, head for either the long beach across the isthmus at Feneglia, the rocky little coves of Argentario, or the beaches of the Maremma National Park. The main entrance to the national park is at Alberese, which is sometimes regulated to not let too many cars through at one time, and from where there is a beautiful drive through the park to the wild and untouched beach at Torre di Collelungo, one of the medieval watchtowers along the coast. The beach is dotted with driftwood, offers a beautiful view along the National Park coast back to Argentario, and is untroubled by any facilities or amenities at all, so take everything you need with you. The hill that Capalbio stands on, surrounded by the woods of the nature reserve and olive groves, was once bare white alabaster rock which glittered in the sunlight and from which it is though the latin name for Capalbio - Campus album - comes from. The hill was inhabited during the iron age, and was an Etruscan settlement in the eighth and seventh centuries BC before the Romans took it. After the fall of the Roman Empire in 476 AD it was invaded by Ostrogoths and Lombard barbarians, and first mentioned in historical records in 805, when Charlemagne, the Holy Roman Emperor, donated it to the Abbey of the Tre Fontane in Rome, before being sold to the powerful Aldobrandeschi nobles in the 11th century, who fortified it and then spent centuries battling the forces of Orvieto and Siena, pillaging by Saracen pirates along the coast, and the ravages of malaria. Beautiful little Talamone was a thriving city and port during the Etruscan period, and site of a fierce battle in 225 BC when Roman troops fought back an alliance of Celtic tribes that had overun northern and central Italy and were marching on Rome. The Aldobrandeschi built the imposing fortifications that tower over the bay in the 13th century before ceding the coast to the Republic of Siena, and the Spanish took the region in 1559 and made it part of the State of the Presidi. The famous rocky little beach in the foreground is the Bagno delle Donne. Until the 1950's single men and women could not share the same beaches, but this "secret" little place, with the Women's Baths separated only by the rocks from the men's bath on the other side, still allowed eyes to meet... 😉. It's small so very busy in the summer, but the water is crystal clear, fabulous for snorkelling, and there are numerous little places to set up a towel and umbrella a bit further away along the rocky shore. This handsome guy, ladies and gentlemen, is the Maremmano Sheepdog, indigenous to the Maremma region of Tuscany and the mountains of Abruzzo. They're livestock guard dogs, distinctively white, and they're big, strong, smart, and fearless. They're still used widely by farmers and shepherds in Abruzzo where sheep herding is still a vital industry, and wolves are active and protected by law. So these dogs battle wolves 😲. There is very little sheep farming in modern Maremma, but these brave dogs were used by the ancient Romans, written about in literature as far back as the 2nd century BC. There are two large statues of them in Rome (one owned by the Vatican), and numerous depictions of them throughout history, including medieval frescos, religious artworks, literature, and illustrations. Famously, they were used in France in 1764-6 by Louis XV during the hunt for the Beast of Gévaudan, possibly a huge wolf, which was responsible for an estimated 200 brutal attacks on men, women, and children resulting in more than 100 deaths and many injuries. Monte Amiata is a strikingly beautiful mountain region north east of Capalbio, with large, wild, rocky forests of beech, spruce, and chestnut trees, and with miles of hiking trails, nature walks, and bike paths. Amiata itself is an extinct volcano, one of the largest in Europe, and was considered a sacred site by the Etruscans and the home of their most important god, Tinia. Five villages ring the region, poor but proud, with their own customs, distinct cuisine, and fascinating history. Abbadia San Salvatore was founded by the Lombards, and its fortified Benedictine monastery was an important regional power controlling much of the region for centuries. Arcidosso was founded in the 9th century and ruled by the Aldobrandeschi who built an imposing fort from where they battled the meddlesome armies of Siena, and Radicofani and its castle was the site of numerous battles for centuries, including a famous slaughter in July 1300, when hundreds died and the commanders of both the Siena and Orvieto regiments were killed. South of Capalbio on the road to Rome in the rocky mountains overlooking Civitavecchia is the fabulous medieval village of Tolfa. It has remarkably old Neolothic origins, with a wealth of archeological history, and became suddenly important in 1461 with the discovery of large deposits of precious and essential alum, a sulphate used to make dyes for textiles. Alum had always been imported from the East, from the Ottoman turks, but this new wealth established a monopoly for the controlling Papal States, who granted the mining deeds to various noble families, in turn, and used the wealth to finance their wars against the Ottomans. Towering over the village are the ruins of the Frangipani castle, destroyed by French troops in 1799 when the town rebelled against Rome, and the local food here - mountain meats and cheeses - is fantastic. Capalbio is ten minutes from the long sandy beaches that stretch all the way from Argentario down to Montalto. It's a simple drive down the hill then a left or right turn on the highway to go north towards Orbetello or south, or across the highway to the small provincial road that runs along the coast passing the various access points to the beaches. The main forest pathway that runs for 6km through the Feniglia nature reserve all the way from Ansedonia on the coast across the tombola to Argentario. It's a gorgeous woodland area of pine, ash, and oak trees with guided marshland pathways on the Orbetello lagoon side, and secluded paths to the Feniglia beach on the seaside at kilometer intervals. Cars aren't allowed, but there's an inexpensive bicycle rental kiosk near the carpark at the entrance. It's been a national park since 1971, restored and reforested, and is a haven for many species of birds and animals including deer, foxes, badgers, woodpeckers, blackbirds, herons, and cuckoos. The beach is one of the loveliest in the region. The first part of it at the entrance to the park has cafes and bars and managed beach areas, sure, but beyond that is miles of untouched free beach dotted with driftwood which has all the privacy and space you could want. Beautiful Marta on the shore of Lago di Bolsena east of of Capalbio, which is Italy's largest volcanic lake. With a long lovely sandy beach to the south and a couple of terrific seafood restaurants, it's as pretty as Capodimonte just around the corner, which has a lovely esplanade and regular artisan market along the water's edge dotted with cafes and terrific gelaterias. Above Capodimonte, looking over the lake, is the imposing Farnese fortress, built by the Aldobrandeschi and used as a papal court in the 16th century by Alessandro Farnese, who was Pope Paul III. The beautiful restored Collelungo tower overlooking the long Alberese beach in the Maremma National park. It was built but the Sienese in the early Renaissance, destroyed and rebuilt in the 16th century, destroyed again in 1847 by lightning and fire, and extensively rebuilt by archeologists and historians in the 20th century as one of the best examples of coastal defense fortifications in Italy. The Republic of Siena had expanded west to the sea to secure it's hinterland and encourage trade in the 12th and 13 centuries, and built an extensive chain of forts along the coastline to fend off regular pirate raids from the sea. This system of towers, newly built or inherited from the Aldobrandeschi, were used for communication between troops, early warning lookout towers, defensive battlements, and forts housing soldiers. They fought Saracens, pirates, Papal forces, the Spanish, and the French. Just north of Capalbio is the hamlet of Marsiliana d'Albegna, and overlooking that on a steep hill, is the Fattoria di Marsiliana castle and farm. It was built in the middle ages by the Aldobrandeschi, then under the control of Siena, then the Presidi, and finally the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. At the beginning of the 18th century it became the property of the Corsini princes of Florence, who still own it. The Corsini were particularly cultured and enlighted. In 1730 the family patriach became Pope Clement XII at the age of 80, and set about founding museums and commissioning monumental works, including the Trevi fountain. In the 20th century, Tommaso Corsini saved numerous galleries and artworks from looting and bombing during the second world war, helped draft the country's new constitutional charter after the war, and was a passionate advocate of modern agricultural techniques that transformed farming in Tuscany and Umbria. He also discovered, in 1908, by chance, the important Etruscan Necropolis of Banditella near his property, and then paid for and directed the archeological excavations. Pretty little Scansano is perched on a spur in the forest hills north of Capalbio, and is the home of the reknown Morellino red wine. Founded by the Etruscans and settled by the Romans, numerous castles of military importance were build in the middle ages to protect the area, while Scansano itself was argued over by the local Aldobrandeschi and the Tolomei family from Siena in the 13th century. Happily, though, strategic marriages or profitable sales in the following centuries meant Scansano passed peacefully between various rulers, all while growing in prosperity and importance until 1780, when it became vice-capital of the Province of Grosetto. Scansano was also the home of Luigi Canzanelli, known to all as Lieutenant Gino, the resistance commander whose troops battled the Germans and fascists constantly during the second world war and who died heroically, protecting his men when they were ambushed. The rare and prestigious Maremmana cows of the Maremma region, with their distinctive long horns white skin and broad torsos, were bred by the Etruscans, written about by the Romans, and form the basis of the distinctive rustic recipes of the region. There are only 3000 of these lovely animals, protected by special status and economic incentives, and they roam in the wild herded by the famous cowboys of the region, the butteri. Modern farming practices, the hard work, and the challenges of econonic realities means that the way of life of authentic working butteri is also under threat, but in 1890 Buffalo Bill brought his Wild West show on a European tour, and in a competition on the outskirts of Rome - according to Italian lore - the butteri easily defeated the American cowboys due to the superior riding and herding skills of one humble and shy horseman from the Maremma, Augusto Imperiali. Siena has its famous horse race, Il Palio, but Manciano has, well, this: rooted in Tuscan tradition but a relatively modern creation, the Palio delle Botti, the barrel race, now involves the whole town at the end of August, where teams from each of the six districts race around the village rolling heavy barrels. This lovely town, inhabited since prehistoric times, was an Aldobrandeschi stronghold in the 12th century, but the Mancianese picked a fight with them so the town was ceded to Sovana, who they didn't like any better. In the 15th century they fought with Siena, who conquered them, and then picked a fight in 1557 with the Medici, who tried "hey, how about farming?" which sort of worked. But what the people of Manciano REALLY hated was Nazis. Nazis and fascists, who they fought constantly. Manciano was the heart of partisan resistance in Italy, the first town in Tuscany liberated by the Allies, and the first place in the country to hold free elections after the war. In the valley at the bottom of the hill below Capalbio is the excavated ruins of Villa Settefinestre, a large Roman villa built by the rich and powerful Volusii family in the 1st century BC. The Volusii were influential senators and slave owners, and the villa was a large agricultural farm and vineyard, expanded in the 1st century AD, then fortified during the civil wars and crisis that enveloped the nearby colony of Cosa. In the 15th century the villa and its fortress were converted into a more modern farming complex, but then fell into ruin. In the 1970's a luxury holiday residence was built neaby, and the ruins themselves were excavated and documented by archeologists, who learned much about argricultural farming in Roman countrysides, and how the farming techniques of Roman agronomists were put into practice. The winding northern coastal road leading to Port Santo Stefano on the Argentario peninsula was where many rich Roman nobles built magnificent villas and baths, the most famous of which were the ruins of Villa Domiziana on strada Liberata, and Villa Dentiliana in nearby Pozzarello. Domiziana was the seat of the powerful Enobarbi family, who were bankers, or "Argentarii" which gives the peninsula it's name! After Roman rule the area faded into obscurity and was fought over in the middle ages by at various times the French, the Austrians, the Spanish, the Kingdom of Naples, Siena, and the Bourbons, until eventually ending up with the Grand Duchy of Tuscany and joining the Kingdom of Italy in 1860. During the second world war it was an important logistical base for the German armed forces, and was bombed heavily by the Allies throughout the war with many civilian casualties. There is some dispute and confusion about the exact location of the ancient Etruscan city of Volsinii. Noone knows where it was, but we do know is that it was an important city and the site of the shrine of Voltumna where the priests and leaders of the twelve city-states of Etruria met every year. And we know that the Romans utterly destroyed it in 264 BC following a slave revolt and shipped the surviving population off to Bolsena. Or did they? Some Byzantine historians believed that Volsinii WAS Bolsena. Others disputed that because Volsinii was said to be on a steep height, and Bolsena is on the plain on the shore of Lake Bolsena. Some scholars looked for it in Montefiasconi on the southern shore of the lake, or even Orvieto. But the esteemed 19th century British explorer George Dennis was convinced it was Bolsena given the wealth or archeological evidence he found there. Dominico Tiburzi was a famous outlaw of the Maremma, loved by the poor and hunted by the authorities for decades in the second half of the 19th century. He and his gang stole from rich nobles, charged wealthy landowners a protection tax, and gave money to peasants, poor artisans, and the families of associates who had been arrested or killed by the police. He escaped from jail twice, but was finally caught and killed by soldiers in 1896 after 24 years in hiding in the hills and forests near Capalbio. The local priest refused an honorable burial but the townspeople rioted, and as a compromise he was buried half in and half out of the Capalbio cemetery by the old gate, with his legs and hips inside, but his head and torso (and therefore his soul) outside. Canino was a thriving Etruscan agricultural town, allied with Vulci, and increased it's regional influence during the middle ages with a number of smart alliegances with first Viterbo, then Tuscania. The beautiful Fiora valley stretches across the vast inland territory of the Maremma, from Manciano up to Santa Fiora at the foot of Mount Amiata, east to Pitigliano, and west to Scansano. It was first settled half a million years ago when rhinos and elephants roamed the area (there's a prehistoric elephant skull in the museum in Manciano), and it was the heart of Etruria, the Etruscan empire. Marsiliana and Saturnia were two great cities of Etruria, and the tuff towns of Pitigliano and Sorano were important quarries. In the 15th century Porto Ercole was bought by the powerful Republic of Siena, who fortified and enriched the town. But Siena was allied with the French, and when the equally powerful Duchy of Florence formed an alliance with Spain and they all started fighting over Italy, an important battle took place in Porto Ercole, the Spanish won, built a bunch of forts and enlarged the port, and the town entered it's most prosperous period. Caravaggio died here in 1610, exiled by the pope from Naples, landing on the beach at Feneglia in a small fishing vessel, already deathly sick, hiding from the authorities in the woodland there, and eventually given refuge in the Church of Saint Erasmus in town. And Porto Ercole was also a summer vacation home of the Dutch royal family for more than fifty years in the 20th century, so much so that Queen Juliana retired here after she abdicated the throne in 1980. A terrific photo of Orbetello in the middle of the lagoon which is bordered by the tombola of Giannella to the the north and Feneglia to the south, and connected the the peninsula of Argentario by the Ponte della Diga bridge, which was built in 1842 by Grand Duke Leopold II of Lorraine. The last surviving Spanish mill is in the the foreground, one of originally nine build by the Sienese and renovated by the Spanish, and which used wind power and water to grind the wheat brought to the mill by boat. The Spanish conqured the region in 1557 and established the State of the Presidio with Orbetello as it's capital; they fortified the city walls with huge battlements and earthworks, built a large gunpowder magazine that is now used as the archeological museum, and the Governor-General ruled from the palace on Piazza Eroe dei due Mondi, with it's very Spanish style windows, balcony, and clock tower. One of the prettiest views in Argentario is still the walk down through the lush vegetation to the free beach at L'Isolotto from the easy parking on the road just around the corner from Porto Ercole. It's one of many gorgeous little beaches along that stretch of the coast. The water is lovely, and yes, it's easy enough to swim over to the island. The cafe overlooking the water is fabulous, and now under the management of the paid Le Viste beach club that's beside the free beach. The beautiful coast of the Argentario between Porto Santo Stefano and Porto Ercole on the western Strada panoramica is dotted with beautiful villas overlooking the rocky coastline and out towards the islands of Giglio and Giannutri. The medieval Church of San Nicola in the old center of Capalbio, built in the 12th century, renovated in the 14th to introduce Gothic elements to its Romanesque base, and decorated the following century to include Renaissance flourishes. The ancient town of Saturnia on the road north of Manciano is famous for its remarkable spa and extensive free baths, and takes its name from the Roman god Saturn, who legend says grew tired of the wars of humans and sent a thunderbolt to earth, fracturing the ground and creating the thermal springs, which would pacify mankind. Should work. Saturnia itself was an Etruscan settlement, then a Roman colony after 183BC. There are extensive ruins of walls, gates, numerous tombs, and the fortress. In 1300 Saturnia became the hideout of outlaws and bandits, so the Sienese killed or dispersed the population and razed it to the ground. It remained abandoned and forgotten for centuries until being rediscovered in the late 19th century, when the spa was rebuilt. The devil's bridge across the river Fiora in Canino was built by the Etruscans and Romans in the third century BC, and the Medieval castle, originally a Benedictine abbey, was built to protect it. The bridge was an important artery across the river between the Papal States and the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, and was fought over bitterly by everyone. From the 12th century onwards it was controlled at various times by the ruling Aldobrandeschi family, Orvieto, and the Prefects of Vico, each adding to the castle and fortifications and imposing lookout tower. The future Pope Paul III lived here from 1513 onwards, as did Luciano Bonaparte, Napoleon's brother, when he was Prince of Canino, and in the 19th century it was a Papal customs point. Since 1975 the castle has been used as the National Archaeological Museum of Vulci, where artifacts from the archaeological excavations of Vulci are exhibited. The Rocca di Montauto is an imposing ruin of a castle and fortifications partially hidden by the lush vegetation of the Montauto nature reserve along the Fiora river a short drive east of Capalbio. Orginally an ancient Etruscan settlement, settled by the Romans, and disputed by Saracens, Popes, and Frankish kings in the middle ages, the castle was built by the Aldobrandeschi family in the 12th century. The most interesting thing about it, though, was that at the end of the 15th century the last ruler of the Eastern Roman Empire in Constantinople, Anna Paleologa, was going to move her entire court and retinue of 100 families to the castle complex following their defeat by the Ottomans. The project was shelved only because the ruling Republic of Siena was beaten by the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, who nixed the idea, after which the castle fell into ruin. The Strada Panoramica that runs around the western coast of Argentario from Porto Santo Stefano in the north to Porto Ercole around, down and to the east is a fabulous road with spectacular views of the coastline. It has a stretch of dirt road in the south and requires attentive driving, but it's still easily doable in a standard family car. There are numerous gorgeous coves and beaches to stop at along the way. They require various lengths of walk from the road down to the beaches, but it's more than worth it because the water is gorgeous and the surroundings magnificent. One of the beautiful forest pathways in the Fenglia nature reserve tombola leading down through the pines to the beach. It's a gorgeous protected woodland area of coastal pine, oak, and ash trees, rich in widlife including deer, foxes, badgers, woodpeckers, blackbirds, herons, and cuckoos, and with a long, straight path running the 6km length of it with beach access exits every kilometer. Caravaggio died here in 1610, among the pines and marshes, of malaria and starvation while hiding from the authorities and archeological excavations here have found evidence of an iron age Villanovan settlement, which was the oldest precurser to the Etruscans. The tombola suffered heavy deforestation in the 19th century, became state property in the early 20th, was reforested, and decalred a nature reserve in 1971. It covers a large 100sq km area from Talamone in the south up to Principina in the north, and inland over the Uccellina mountains to the Aurelia road. In the heart of the Maremma National Park, high on the wooded ridge of the Monti dell'Uccellina hills overlooking the sea, are the stunning ruins of the Abbey of San Rabano and its imposing bell tower. The abbey was founded as a Benedictine monastery in the 11th or 12th century, was fortified by the Hospitallers of Saint John of Jerusalem, who also built the nearby Uccellina watchtower and hermitage. The monks struggled to make the rugged surrounding land productive, and the complex was abandoned in the 16th century. Reaching it is a five hour round trip hike following the route 1 trail from the Alberese Visitor Center, up through the thick vegetation and oak forest to the highest point of the national park at Poggio Lecci, from where you can see the coast, the mountains of Corsica, and the whole of the Tuscan archipelago. The short and winding drive along the northern coast of Argentario towards Porto Santo Stefano is particularly pretty, with houses, hotels, and villas dotting the shoreline and a number of lovely little beaches nestled among the trees and vegetation with parking next to the road. Unlike a lot of the peninsula, it's flat here because the road is right on the water's edge, so there's no hiking to get to the beach! A short drive north of Capalbio is the beautiful small town of Magliano in Toscana. It looks out over flat hinterland of that area of the Maremma, from behind large a striking fortified walls. Magliano was an important Etruscan settlement, and the archeological disovery of the 5th century Disco di Magliano was fundamental to the codification of the Etruscan language. After the Etruscans, the Romans settled and fortified the town, and during the middle ages it was controlled by the powerful Aldobrandeschi family, who held it until it was incorporated into the Republic of Siena in the 14th century. The Sienese extended and renovated the remarkable walls, but they too, lost it to the Grand Duchy of Tuscany in the mid-sixteenth century. We had to ask because we didn't know ourselves and even Google doesn't identify it, but you'll be too curious and eventually want to explore it, as we did. There are numerous dirt pathways, some that take a fairly steep, almost vertical direct route to the top, others that wind their way more leisurely upwards. The highest point itself is hard to find, and heavily wooded so there's not much to see, but there are a number of great vantage points near the top looking out towards the coast and Argentario, and such a rich and beautiful diversity of plants and trees and and bushes, that it's a lovely few hours trek on a morning or afternoon. There's also a wild boar enclosure that the local hunting association maintains up there too that we stumbled upon. See if you can find it.
