Hard to believe she's a quarter of a century old this month, back home to us again . . My wife's college car, which went to her younger brother, then younger sister, then her dad, and now back home to us . . She was almost donated to the state many years back for not passing CA smog . . I brought her home one day, spent a full day, pulled the intake, and throttle body, cleaned them all. Then pulled the EGR, cleaned the EGR ports and installed new port plugs . . She passed with flying colors, and back on the road . . She's idling a bit bumpy now, so I'm sure a full carbon clean is in order again. . . Was sitting for 3 months . . Hoping to get her dialed in and reliably road-worthy . . A few tech tips . . 1. I've always placed car batteries on wooden blocks to prevent battery discharging through ground and prevent moisture exposure. However, newer batteries come with more durable polycarbonate casings that make it ok, but...old habits are hard to shake, so wooden blocks it is . . 2. I've always hand-started spark plugs at installation. Just a silicone hose at the tip and then spin until it catches and stops. Then tighten to specs with plug socket and wrench. This was my first time doing it horizontally, and I had to cut a shorter hose due to the tight working area. It worked like a charm like it always does, and (knock on wood) no stripped plug threads. . . 3. I always carry extra 5/8 spark plug sockets. One with a rubber sleeve and one without. Whats your time worth? . . Decided to replace the 20yr old radiator just for preventative maintenance before taking a long trip . . It wasn't leaking, just a little sugar around the filler neck, but once I pulled it, the neck looked like it could give any minute . .
