I am pleasantly surprised by how hard this Dollar Tree mousse is working. Spa Luxury Professional Styling Mousse Extra Hold for Style and Control - could the name be any longer? This black can with the classic white mousse inside packs a punch. I thought for sure it was going to dry my hair out from how it felt when I applied it, but nope. I plopped in a t-shirt towel for a bit, and then I diffuse-dried. I wanted to treat the grays like special VIPs, so I reached for Luseta Color Brightening shampoo and hair mask. I threw in Curls BIG BLUE Leave-in Conditioner because it will take a lifetime to go through if I don’t dab a little here and there. Plus it adds moisture. I couldn’t get my background how I like it in the first pic or my face in the last pic, hence the edits. Or I guess the shape is more like her sisters’. *insert smoker’s cough* I found the Curlsmith Shine Recipe Mini shampoo and conditioner in the clearance section of TJ Maxx, and since I have loved the gels from that line, I decided to try them. The whole line is Fragrance-Free, which is hard to come by with haircare. Practically unheard of! I also found a hair oil to try, and I love the beautiful bottle it is in. A new cocktail for my mini me: Camille Rose Naturals Coconut Water Leave-in Detangling Hair Treatment (purchased at a discount which is the only upside to Face Values closing. 🥲) and Rusk Wired Flexible Styling crème with the fancy accent over the “e” and everything. My stylist used this Rusk product on me, and even though I am a gel devotee, when I saw it on clearance for $6 at TJ Maxx I decided to bring the salon to my house. It contains dimethicone which I usually steer clear of, but with a good clarifying shampoo I don’t mind cones. Giving the ol’ Dollar Tree hair aisle a try. I have seen these PS Clean Beauty products for a while. They have multiple types (I am trying the Gentle shampoo and Ultra Hydrating Conditioner), but they all share something in common: no sulfates, and the same scent. I’m not wowed by the fragrance. It is generic and “clean” — not really fruity, floral, or woodsy, not sweet or dessert-like, and not herbal or like any classic essential oils. It doesn’t linger in the hair either way. • To style, I went with one line from one brand: Twist by Ouidad. I found the Gimme it All 4-in-1 at my local salvage store for $3. I have seen a co-wash you can also use as a conditioner, but I have never seen a co-wash also branded as a leave-in or a styler. I used it as a leave-in, and then I followed with a never-fail product that always gives me definition and hold: Ready, Set, Bounce. I swear, I can’t have a bad hair day when I use this. HOWEVER, the texture - once you apply it to hair - almost becomes waxy. If you do the prayer hands method, sliding it down your strands from crown to end, your hands actually start to skip. There is that much friction. It’s crazy. Gummy Bears scent!) because from OUTSIDE of the bottle it smelled like cotton candy. The actual product smells more fruity than sweet and not like any candy I have actually smelled. So I am a little sad I didn’t get cotton candy, but it’s so colorful and fun, and it provides nice slip, so I can use it up. Not Your Mother’s Smooth Moves shampoo feels so nourishing. It rinses away without feeling like it has stripped my hair. I forget what stylers I used. The styler I used for #ccnacocktail no. 97 is Jozi Curls Curl Hydrating Pudding, which I scored for $2 at my local salvage store. I also tried it on my daughter’s 2c curls, so you can swipe to the end for that. The texture is gelatinous curds that you have to massage in your hand to make a more consistent gel application. Both the texture and the translucent color of the pudding is identical to Curlsmith Curl Defining Souffle. I would call them dupes, but their scent is different. It is also similar to Kinky-Curly Curling Custard (which is a little runnier) and TGIN Honey Curls Custard (which is more viscous). Sometimes you can tell right after styling that you will love the end look a few hours later once it air-dries (I diffuse-dry at the very end if I have somewhere to be, and don’t want a wet head). Trying out the Softee Silken Shea line (shampoo and conditioner), since they are only $1.25 each. I was NOT disappointed. The scent in store had me hooked (smells like coconut sun tan oil). The shampoo is clear and thin, and suds up well despite being sulfate-free. Leaves your hair feeling parched, which is not my fave. The conditioner is white and runny but adds tons of slip and softness. The ingredients are mindful of curly needs. • Here is my hair directly out of the shower, so you can see what the shampoo and conditioner do. Idk what I thought you’d notice. It’s just wet hair. 😆 • The jar of shampoo is called Cleansing Mask with Lemon (it does not suds up), and the bottle of conditioner is called Detangling Gelée (it looks and feels like regular conditioner). • I used a single styler called Anti-Frizz Rescue Milk. It is a light lotion. Sometimes it’s hard to know which product is doing what, but in this case I will give credit to AG Hair Care Curl Fresh Definer (a stoop find) because I am already familiar with what the other products do in my hair. It is really thin so it comes out fast. For that reason I store it upside-down. Despite its thin consistency, it provides good hold and definition. I would call it a gel-cream because it looks like a runny cream, but it holds like a gel. It may have had some help from Jane Carter Untangle Me. I think it is marketed as a detangler, but to me it feels like a light hold gel. And it has a slick feeling like flaxseed gel (not sure if that is an ingredient). Shampoo and deep-conditioned with the Fresh Mango & Passionfruit Mask. I put on a plastic shower cap and used my heating cap for 20 minutes. • Styled with the 3-in-1 (almost out, and I WILL buy again) as a leave-in, Recovery Cream as a cream styler, and Crystal Orchid Biotin-Infused Styling Gel for hold. • Here are my tools: wide-tooth comb in the shower, Thermal Vibes washable (!) cordless heating cap, mist sprayer of water to style, a little clip to keep my bangs out of my face while it air dried, and then the Centrix Q-Zone quiet blow dryer + diffuser to finish. • Second to last pic shows my hair fully dry. • I still can’t get over all this gray! Giving Curlsmith another try! This time I am prepping for my heat styling (I diffuse-dry) with Advanced Clinicals 10-in-1 Frizz Control. It works as a detangler and does not have any silicones (which is what I look for in a primer). With just the jelly as a styler I am surprised about the hold I got. I think the two Curlsmith products that haven’t agreed with me are the Weightless Air-Dry Cream and the Curl Defining Styling Soufflé. I am so glad to have enough Design Essentials products to play with together! I can do a whole ‘do now! • I found an orchid outside a local flower shop who got separated from his stem. It was fate. • The original pull of these products was the scent since I had never heard of it. It is Black-owned and typically found at Ulta, JC Penney, and Target. I showed you all the products available at TJ Maxx and Marshalls, but not all of them smell as fresh and fruity as the conditioner. The leave-in smells really off-putting so I didn’t get it. The other gel in a tub smells nice but is goopy, so I went for the tall bottle. Playing with two products from the Twist line by Ouidad today. They are popping up at TJ Maxx this week (which means you could check Marshalls too). I found these two in the clearance section for $6 each. They retail for $8-9 at Target (swipe to see promo pics from the Target app, including a close-up of the texture of Ready, Set, Bounce soft-hold curl-defining gelée. Does gelée mean gel-cream? That is how I would describe the texture.) I sprayed the Curl Goals moisture-locking leave-in conditioner into my hands and applied to wet hair (it’s like a thin lotion, so I never feel comfortable spraying a thick consistency directly onto my hair). I finger-combed it through, and then I added Bounce in sections. I didn’t use a brush, so there isn’t too much uniformity to my curls. This is the natural pattern that forms when applying these products. Three days of great hair from Dollar Tree products! Don’t sleep on Shea Solutions! Only on Wash Day would I ever combine a shampoo AND a co-wash conditioner. Usually to clean my hair I would just use the co-wash, but for an extra clean (I suppose), I tried the shampoo. It is the color and consistency of Softsoap creamy hand soap, and it feels very moisturizing. The front says paraben-free, but it is NOT sulfate-free, fyi. • The Deep Conditioner and Co-Wash I just used as a regular conditioner (I put it in, detangled with my fingers, and I rinsed it out). • I use the leave-in daily when I want a creamy kind. It works on my daughter’s fine, 2c curls as a styler since it is heavy enough to smooth the cuticle but not so heavy that it looks greasy on her. • For the first time I finally tried this Curl Stretch Cream (it was buried under other products). I usually don’t want elongation because I worry it counteracts volume, but luckily this was not the case. It is lightweight. Works great on its own. I would call it more of a gel-cream in consistency and performance. I never had to refresh my hair! These curls come to you courtesy of two recent Marshalls finds: Twisted Sista Foaming Curl Mousse that I followed with Curls Hair Gelle (Caviar and Cashmere line). I hope no actual caviar went into the making of this product, because that would not be animal-friendly. I should have researched it. This stuff right here? Fascinating! DIY Made Easy Hair Conditioner by @tropicgyalnaturals is a brown powder you mix with water, and you immediately notice how yummy it smells. • It looks like cake batter. The ingredients are all natural (banana, cocoa, sweet potato) so I tried it. Tastes like stale bread (no sweetness), but it’s not for consumption anyway, it’s for conditioning! • I added this to my regular routine of Herbal Hair Wash (a gray powder that you shake with water into a squeeze bottle. Consistency is thinner). • Before styling I spray with the Herbal Hair Tea (leaves you brew with hot water, let cool, and strain) in a Flairisol mist sprayer. I also combined the leaves with apple cider vinegar and let that sit for a week. Then I add a few tablespoons of that infusion to water in a different spray bottle and apply for added benefits. Style as usual. • I threw in some satin scrunchies for my mini me. • Her 2c curly hair loves these products. • Here is my hair before styling • I used NYM All Eyes on Me 10-in-1 Hair Perfector + Kinky-Curly Spiral Spritz (my latest winning combo to prime hair) and follow with The Mane Choice Crystal Orchid Biotin-Infused Styling Gel. • Here is my hair after styling. I did my detangling with a wide-tooth comb in the shower. I removed the spray pump and poured the products into my hands. I applied with the prayer hands method (smoothing from root to tip). My 80th cocktail! I like that I could give myself bangs with the Garnier gel and the @behairfulbrush brush. The goal with this cocktail was for it to smell heavenly. I knew I wanted to use Maui Moisture Vanilla Bean conditioner as a co-wash so I had to reach for Camille Rose Honey Leave-in (looks like honey but smells like caramel), and finish with their Curl Love Moisture Milk (vanilla butter cream goodness). One styler only! @themanechoice Peach Black Tea & Vitamin Infusion Mousse, (aka Peach Black Tea Anti-Shedding & Intense Volume Therapy Mousse, as it is listed on Sally Beauty Supply’s website). I tried it on a whim from TJ Maxx and have not been disappointed. The biggest adjustment was seeing it foam and bubble (and crackle as the bubbles pop) once you apply it. It even has a white cast. And it takes a long time to air dry, so I give it a boost at the end with my blow dryer and diffuser attachment. But products behave differently, so it won’t do what a gel does. It is POURING rain outside, and my curls have no idea. 🌧 Here is what I did differently than usual: I followed a co-wash with a conditioner I squished to condish (S2C) - using a HANDFUL of conditioner I applied conditioner to the roots I rinsed with cool water I didn’t completely rinse out the conditioner I used a leave-in conditioner I didn’t comb or brush out of the shower - only detangled with my hands I used the prayer-hands method to apply cream and gel. I air-dried for two hours, and then I put it up in a t-shirt turban. Before bed I diffuse-dried, and I wore a satin bonnet. My curly journey has been trial and error and reading social media posts. It turns out there a HANDFUL of things I tried tonight that I have never done before! I WOULD let this air-dry, but I have started too late in the day. Two hours after styling I threw it in a t-shirt turban. Trying a combo I saw by @mixxedcutiecurls where I apply Miss Jessie’s Pillow Soft Curls and then The Mane Choice Crystal Orchid styling gel. I got beautiful definition, and some tightened spirals aka shrinkage. I love the results, but I couldn’t get it to do much on Day 2 (see last pic). There was so much frizz around the crown and halfway down it was hardly worth the effort to wet it and refresh it. C’est fini! Here are my results with Miss Jessie’s Quick Curls styling cream! If you’re just tuning in, I am comparing four Miss Jessie’s stylers that all come in similar bottles. This is the final one. This one has a light citrus note followed by a floor cleaner scent. Not very natural, but pronounced. The scent doesn’t linger in the hair. It weighed my daughter’s porous 2c curls down. You’re looking at her hair fully dry, and her curls didn’t bounce up. They stayed in sporadic, non-uniform spirals, with an oiled look. As for my 3c curls, the shape is nice, the curls are tight, and right out of the shower you can see them start to coil and dry. Pretty cool effect and an apt name! Part 2 of my #ccnaexperiment of comparing four Miss Jessie’s styling products is Jelly Soft Curls. This is a clear gel that smells like baby powder to me and feels a little heavier than the Pillow Soft lotion I previously tried. On my daughter’s 2c curls it provides more hold and shine than Pillow Soft. For me, I happened to try it on a humid day with non-stop mist rain, so any hold I may have had was gone. My results are surprisingly similar to Pillow Soft considering the difference in consistency of the formulas, but again this is Day 2 hair and in the rain no less. This look was called on account of rain! My hair while wet, however, looks nice and defined. First time trying Miss Jessie’s Pillow Soft Curls! Nice and soft 3c curls. Shape and volume! But quite a bit of frizz which is to be expected with a light hold lotion. My daughter’s 2c curls had less frizz. Third pic shows my hair right out of the shower and then once Pillow has been applied (see how moisturizing?). I used the Cantu brush to detangle and add definition, and then the Cala brush to try to reduce frizz. I applied it at night so technically the first pic is Day 2 Hair. I slept with a satin bonnet. I’m trying @olaplex for the first time! 🎉 This is the Olaplex No. 0 Intensive Bond Building Hair Treatment. It comes with a sample size No. 3 Hair Perfector. I am trying to combat some hair loss at the crown I have noticed lately. Could be my imagination, hormonal, or breakage from heavy products in the name of moisture. Either way, I want to go longer without washing. Healthier hair looks better for longer stretches at a time, and this comes recommended for restoring hair to its healthiest state. This is a #ccnafirsts post AND ALSO a #ccnahairdays post because I am showing you the results as I apply it, just out of the shower at 2pm, what it looked like for my streaming comedy show at 10pm, then on day 2, and finally on day 3. 3rd pic is how much of the No. 0 I used to “saturate” my dry hair. Its consistency is as thin as water. The 5th pic is what I look like after following with the No. 3 Hair Perfector. The 6th pic is after showering and before styling. I washed with @thevidabars Balance shampoo and conditioner bars. Hair feels clean and soft. Looks a little frizzy, but by show time it is on point. I styled with @ouidad Humidity Control gel. Their Black Jamaican Castor Oil Line is already fabulous, and now it has a LAVENDER version! I tried the shampoo, conditioner and leave-in conditioner. This line is for Moisture & Growth, and it delivered. My hair felt moisturized, and I feel I have grown as a person. 😂 I styled with the Hair Sorbet for hold. My curls feel soft, defined, and I love the overall shape. They don’t have as much movement because the Hair Sorbet has a buttery texture as opposed to Curl Custard from their Shea line (which also comes in a tub but is more like a creamy gel). Lavender is definitely present in the scent, but also a hint of citrus. I keep the Lavender and Shea Hand and Body lotion on my bathroom sink and love it right out of the shower or just to re-moisturize after frequent hand-washing. I like its shiny, purple, textured packaging! It is heavenly - creamy with a light, pleasant, lavender scent. I am giving my new Curlsmith products a second chance to work their magic because the first time I tried them I put a helmet on my wet head and went biking in the sweltering heat. As a result, they were flattened and frizzy from the sweat. This time I let them air dry 80% (and diffuse-dry 20%) indoors. I even rocked these curls for an online comedy show! Wow almost a head-on shot of my face, driver’s license style, when you KNOW I favor a 3/4 view. Just trying to give you a new angle for the curls. All @cantubeauty products went into this #ccnacocktail no. 56 (with a hint of Dippity-Do Girls with Curls Gelée at the end for extra hold). I started with the Complete Conditioning Co-Wash, and then out of the shower I applied the Leave-In Conditioner from the Care for Kids line. I used the Moisturizing Curl Activator Cream as a styling cream (usually I just use it to refresh damp hair), and I finished with the Curl Refresher spray from the kids line again. Two products went into this cocktail! It’s #ccnacocktail no. 55 starring @sheamoisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen & Restore Styling Lotion and the Conditioning Shine Gel from the same line. I still plan on covering my gray streak sometime soon, but for now let’s pose! Pose! Yes hunty! The styling lotion smells like vanilla buttercream - yum! 😋 The gel smells like peppermint. I reviewed it a couple cocktails back. Texture is like aloe vera, and the color is a dark, molasses brown. THIS time since I was able to combine it with a cream I am head over heels in love with the results. This is not the most accurate portrayal of my results from trying Curlsmith for the first time. Not only is this Day 2 hair, but I also squashed it under a bike helmet on Day 1 (while it was still wet - shame shame) to run errands in the hot sun. So with sweat-induced frizz and a helmet ruining the shape, you’re not seeing the initial shine or definition I had. I still couldn’t wait to talk about the products. I used the Hydro Crème Soothing Mask (deep conditioner), the Weightless Air Cream (love that name!), and the Hydro Style Flexi Jelly. Price range is up there, so I used Ulta coupons. I was inspired by a post by @hif3licia who recommended this Weightless Air Dry Cream. She also said to add the Jelly as a styler. A hair cream and gel combo that didn’t require a blow dryer? Sign me up! I didn’t wait for it to finish drying before I ran my errands, but I didn’t notice it stayed wet very long. So...it works? I was so excited to try #ccnacocktail no. 53! I ventured into Marshalls (it’s open in Brooklyn again! 🎉) and found new items from a line that I already like. I had @okaypurenaturals Shampoo and Curling Custard from the Black Jamaican Castor Oil line, and this week I found the Conditioner and Hair Sorbet. This is Day 2 hair, and I slept on it without a bonnet and didn’t refresh, so you are NOT seeing the most impressive volume or frizz control. But the smell of each product is amazing (Shampoo is pineapple-coconut scent, Conditioner and Hair Sorbet are grapefruit scent, and Curling Custard is Fruit Stripe gum scent - I’m really crazy for it.) I also love the feel of each product. Swipe to see the first scoop of the Sorbet. Like buttercream! And the Curling Custard is cloudy white and with the consistency of a gel but provides great hold on its own. I will try these again on a less humid day (they’re super moisturizing). The price is right too.
