As governor of Rivers State, Nyesome Wike blacklisted Arise TV from coming close to the Ruvets State government, and so the station did not benefit from the deep pocket and lavish spending that Wike splurged on selected media houses that include Channels, AIT, and TVC for 8 years. In this country, there was a time when Wike was the individual biggest media spender; no other person comes close. On a monthly basis, Channels TV earned close to 2 billion naira from him alone. The business was good and flourishing. Wike’s grumble with Arise TV was that the TV station offered its platform for his political archrivals and enemies to attack and intimidate him. He is a man of ego who does not forgive easily. The Arise TV problem with him was. 4 people, including a preacher, were stabbed in a church in western Sydney on Monday evening local time. Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel, the preacher at Wakeley church, was delivering his sermon when the assailant approached him and began stabbing at him with a knife. The sermon was being livestreamed at the time of the attack. The four victims were treated by paramedics and said to have non-life threatening injuries. All of the victims were men and said to be of varying ages. Local police said an operation was underway, and the apparent assailant had been arrested and taken for questioning. New South Wales Police urged people to stay out of the area of the church located in Fairfield, a suburb of Sydney. According to Sky News Australia, a riot erupted outside following the attack. The mayor called for calm and also asked that people not go down to the church. The bishop is said to be a popular religious leader in the community, with a large social media following. This is the second stabbing incident to occur in Sydney in the space of a week, after 6 people were stabbed to death at a mall on Saturday.

The All Progressives Congress, APC, state working committee in Kano, has taken drastic measures against some Ward Party Leaders who suspended the National Chairman of the Party, Umar Abdullahi Ganduje. APC Ganduje ward in Dawakin Tofa Local Government was said to have suspended Ganduje but in a quick counter, the party’s local government officials thwarted the suspension and sacked those behind it. The APC Dawakin Tofa Local Government Chairman, Inusa Dawanau, told Newsmen that those behind the suspension of the National Chairman were caught in anti-party activities and their records of meetings with the opposition, exposed. Adopting the suspension of the APC Ward APC leaders, the state working committee of the Party said they have sanctioned the perpetrators for six months and a special investigations panel has been set up to verify several allegations against them. The Kano Chairman of the Party, Abdullahi Abbas, said the decisions of the LG Party Leaders have since been adopted. “We have evidence of meetings between the state government officials and those that suspended the National Chairman. The state working committee has agreed to sanction them for six months and they stand now suspended.” However, one of the accused party men against Ganduje, Halliru Gwanjo said they decided to suspend him from the party due to the allegations levelled against him by the Kano State government on bribery.

Ganduje’s membership suspension by his ward came a few days after the former Governor was slammed with eight count charges bordering on corruption and misappropriation of public funds. Air Peace Flight To London Sparks Price War Among Foreign Airlines The entry of Nigeria’s major carrier, Air Peace into the lucrative London route, has sparked price war among foreign airlines which have severally reduced their airfares to compete effectively with the Nigerian airline. This emerged just as the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, yesterday, thanked Gatwick Airport, London management for welcoming Air Peace, which started flight service to the airport on March 30, 2024. Air Peace started direct flights from Lagos to London on March 30, pegging its price for a round-trip economy ticket at N1.2 million on a route that foreign airlines used to charge as much as N3 million. This prompted the foreign airlines to cut their airfares to an average of N1.4 million for a round-trip economy ticket last week. But checks yesterday showed that some foreign airlines have further slashed their prices to an average of N841,732. Checks by THISDAY showed that prices by most of the flights have dropped significantly. For instance, Egyptair has dropped its Lagos-London economy ticket price further to ($470) N585,620; Air Peace London to Lagos now goes for ($655) N816, 130; British Airways goes for ($787.99) N981, 848; Virgin Atlantic ($927.99) N1.1 million and Royal Air Moroc ($456.99) N569,422. Also, RwandAir has pegged its airfare to London at ($545.35) N679,070; Ethiopian Air ($543.84) -N677, 824; Turkish Airlines ($647.84) – N807, 408; Air France London ($915.99) -N1.1 million, while KLM pegged its price to ($927.84) – N1.1 million. CBN Staff: We Are Living In Fear Of Sack Members of staff of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) have disclosed they are living in constant fear over the ongoing sacking since the appointment of Dr Olayemi Cardoso as the Governor. The CBN workers who spoke with Daily Trust said no department can be spared in the continued sacking ravaging the apex bank. The country's apex bank staff said this in reaction to disengagement of another 50 of their colleagues on Monday. About 117 people have been shown the way out in the last 20 days, cutting across 29 departments. The termination of appointments affects directors, deputy directors, assistant directors, principal managers, senior managers and lower ranking staff. Speaking about the disturbing development, one of the staff said, "We have seen indiscriminate sacking in procurement, development finance and the medical services department. What it means is that other departments will follow soon. "I am worried that they will come for all those that worked closely with the sacked directors. The apprehension is not good for productivity and it is also bad for the system. Another senior staff member said: "A lot of people who received their sack letter just kept quiet and left their various offices. They feel helpless by the way the system is structured." The gang members confessed to multiple armed robberies and other crimes in the FCT, and they are also affiliated with a cult group called Vikings. The police recovered several weapons, including AK47 rifles, pistols, and ammunition. The Commissioner of Police, CP Benneth Igweh, is committed to making the FCT a safer place by cracking down on criminal activities. Police Arrest Four For Hijacking Tricycle In Adamawa The Adamawa State Police Command has arrested four suspects for allegedly hijacking a tricycle belonging to one Nuhu Muhammed, a commercial tricyclist operating in Yola, the Adamawa State capital. According to a press release by the Command’s spokesman, SP Suleiman Nguroje, made available to THE WHISTLER on Monday, the suspects, Abdullahi Yusuf (22 years), Umar Yahaya (20 years), Hassan Ishaka (24 years) and Shuaibu Abubakar (19 years), all residents of Kwabura village, Hawal Local Government Area in Borno State, were arrested on Sunday. According to Nguroje: “On April 7th, 2024, at about 0600hrs, Nuhu Muhammed, a tricyclist, raised alarm along Jimeta-Mubi Bridge after being attacked and robbed of his tricycle.” He explained further that investigations so far revealed that the suspects boarded the tricycle posing as passengers, while telling the tricyclist to take them to a certain location, around Viniklang, Girei Local Government Area. However, “upon reaching the bridge, they (suspect) applied force on the tricyclist, threatening him with dangerous weapons, pushed him out of the tricycle and went away with it. “A swift response from the Jimeta Division patrol team led to the apprehension of these suspects and the recovery of the tricycle. “The Commissioner of Police CP Dankombo Morris, Psc (+), assured that the suspects will be charged to court for criminal conspiracy and armed robbery, upon the conclusion of the investigation,” Nguroje said.
Man In Adamawa Stabs Wife To Death After She Seized His Phone The Adamawa State Police Command has arrested a 33-year-old man identified as Ibrahim Abubakar, for stabbing to death his 25-year-old wife, Hajara Sa’adu. The suspect, who is a butcher and resident of Sabon Gari-Futy in Girei local government area, subdued the deceased, by stabbing her severally with a sharp knife on her back, thereby causing her severe injuries and leaving her in a pool of blood. The State Command Public Relations Officer, SP Suleiman Yahaya Nguroje, noted that the suspect brutally killed the deceased on April 8 at about 4:30 am, after he accused her of taking away his phone, which led to little argument. The suspect was apprehended following the report made to police by the father of the deceased and a preliminary investigation conducted, leading to the recovery of material evidence at the scene of the crime that is linked to him. The suspect voluntarily made a confessional statement, adding that he regretted killing the mother of their only child.

Totalenergies To Exit Nigerian Onshore Oil Business French oil major TotalEnergies has announced plans to sell its minority stake in a major Nigerian oil joint venture. The firm said it wants to divest its share of Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited (SPDC) and is looking to reshape its portfolio since producing oil in the Niger Delta is not in line with its health, security and environmental policies. “We want to divest our share of SPDC, and we are looking to reshape the portfolio. Fundamentally it’s because producing this oil in the Niger Delta is not in line with our (Health, Security and Environmental) policies, it’s a real difficulty,” Patrick Pouyanne, TotalEnergies chief executive officer was quoted by Reuters as saying at the company’s annual results presentation on Wednesday. Mr Pouyanne noted that the company would keep its Nigerian gas resources, which he described as crucial for the company’s planned expansion of liquefied natural gas development in the coming years.

Ifeoluwa Adekunle, AAUA Student Found Dead In Her Room A female student of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba, (AAUA), was found dead in her room this weekend. The deceased identified as Ifeoluwa Adekunle was a 300-level student of the Department of Economics. It was gathered that the undergraduate student, who lived outside the campus, was attacked by her assailants while alone in the room. A source, who preferred to be anonymous, said the killing caused apprehension among other students, stressing that the case had been reported to the police. “We found her in a pool of blood in her room. She was stabbed to death by yet-to-be-identified persons who came visiting. We know this is not a cult-related issue as some people are propagating.” “We have reported the murder case to the police but seems they are slow in responding to our demands in identifying and tracking those behind this dastardly act. “We are imploring the Ondo State Government to please look into the matter and ensure that the deceased gets justice,” he said. Confirming the incident in a chat on Sunday, the Police Public Relations Officer in Ondo State, Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, said investigation was ongoing.
