Perspective is a funny thing, I think. Over the years, opening, carting patio furniture out, became sort of a drudgery. A little bit mind numbing. Something to be avoided. Turning back to it these past days has been a proper delight, Jack and Goose and me racing home when we can so we can be a part of it with the opening crew. I find myself trying very hard, lately, to organize my day so we can be here, on target, for the effort. Beyond the work, there exists a tangible sense of possibility. Who’s going to come in tonight, who are we about to meet we never have before? What familiar smile will present itself, and the lightness that comes with it? Will we skate through service absent misstep, or challenge, or are we about to have to find a sense of humor about ourselves as we stink the place up with god awful service? From that sense of possibility alone, it’s a beautiful hour, and one not to be missed. It’s easy to fall in love, I guess. No one has to make any effort to let gravity take hold. It’s the choice when the falling is over that makes the difference, that makes experience truly rich and meaningful … funny how no matter how many times I learn that lesson in life, life has a way of repackaging it and presenting it to me with a knowing smile on its face, happy to watch me take for granted that which at one time was a singular pleasure. I’m not sure how next I’ll be offered a chance to trip over the notion, though I am positive, given I am human, that I will, but I don’t think these blue chairs will ever get heavy again, and I can’t wait to put them out today, again. Right after we opened, a really nice guy called me and told me his kid had lost a Smurf toy between the big booth and the window. I remember taking the thing apart as far as I could and just couldn’t reach anything. That booth got enthusiastically from apart today, and I found that Smurf toy. We’ve got an upcoming kitchen remodel, and we’re going to likely close a couple of times for a day or two prior to the actual remodel itself … a little time to freshen the lipstick, so to speak, get floors redone, new storage strategies built in, etc, prior to the remodel itself. Mad apologies, being closed isn’t our point, but I intend to keep my staff economically whole as we move through the process, and this is the best way to do it, as well as minimize the down time for the remodel itself. I’m grateful for your patience, and we hope to see you tomorrow, with another couple of boxes checked on our very long To Do list.
