If my face looks like I'm the one that started the fire...well I can assure you I didn't. 😅 This is part of farming. You fight unsolicited veld fires. How this fire started was beyond me or any farmer in the surrounding area. This fire started about 5km away on one farm and did what it does, spread like wild fire 🔥. It moved so fast it jumped a 4 metre tarred road and right into our farm. Every farmer in the surrounding area for about 10 km was on high alert ⚠️. The first thing we did was herd all animals to safety. It was hot, it kept jumping and reigniting in different places. I'm no firefighter but I did everything I could like every other farmer would to protect their crops, animals and structures. The last time this happened many years ago, apparently it burned large fields for about 30km and more. It consumed everything in its path, and sadly even a few cattle. When a veld fire starts and it's constantly fed by wind, it grows. Needless to say that it was one hell of a windy day. We loaded our water tank at the back of the van, connected a high pressure sprayer and got to work. Everyone was on board, firefighters, community members, farmers, even a few construction guys that happened to be close by. We had to breakdown a few fences separating farms just to get to any fire that could possibly get out of hand. At some point the firefighters told us to just let the rest of the veld burn, thankfully it was just a small portion left. The fire got way too big too quick. "Safety first" they said... It was dangerous, it was scary but what an experience it was. This happened a year ago, all is well. I often romanticize this life. Farming. The beauty.. Lambs are adorable.. I love my sheep… The reels and pictures you see, are real life, but there’s more to it. ….and it isn’t always rainbows and snuggles over here. Today, we had to dock, vaccinate, and ear tag the lambs. —We also had to move the sheep around to new pens and many went out into the yard. We do it in a step by step process. Avoiding bottle lambs is 100% the tasks so the more one on one time the ewe has with her lambs, the better. —> communication and smells is how they interact. These days are highly volcanic. Livestock isn’t easy to move, especially several times a day. Thankful for Mak the #bordercollie. At the end of the day, all is well. 6+ hours spent in the barn, sheep and lambs testing your patience. You have to be ON it while working the sheep. They are fast and run in a herd. It’s growth. It’s just one more day. It’s hard work. It’s so rewarding. We are still married and can laugh at the day. I’m exhausted and am ready for bed. Thankful for my #curleekidsshitshow. They help out so much. Prince Letsita’s journey commenced at the age of 15 under the guidance of his father and grandfather, both seasoned farmers who became his mentors. Hailing from Welkom Free State, at 16, he planted his initial vegetables across 5 hectares of his father’s land. It was during this time that his passion for farming blossomed, sparked by a bountiful harvest. By the age of 21, Prince leased a 60-hectare farm in Hennenman, where he relentlessly pursues his aspiration of becoming a commercial farmer. His current endeavour involves a diverse array of livestock including Brahman and Bonsmara cattle, Merino sheep, Boerbok goats, and layer chickens. Cultivation-wise, he dedicates 60 hectares to maize with rotations of sunflowers and soybeans. To augment his skills, Prince attended short courses in farm finance and management facilitated by Dunamus Agri Advisory. Operating under his registered company, PriGra Trading (Pty) Ltd, established in 2022, he manages his farming pursuits alongside a construction facet within the company. German farmers in Lower Saxony will receive funding to transition away from hog farming as Germany seeks to diversify its agricultural sector and become more sustainable. As a part of its diversification program, the Agricultural Investment Promotion Program (AFP), administered through the Lower Saxony Chamber of Agriculture, will give preferential access to funding to farmers who seek to transition away from pig farming. Those who reduce the number of animals by at least half will be awarded five application points, and those who wish to exit pig farming completely will receive 10 application points. Meat consumption in Germany is at an all-time low since records began in 1989. Lower Saxony, which provides Germany with a third of its pork, had its lowest numbers in a decade in 2022. The AFP, which also focuses on environmental and climate protection, has introduced new regulations that make it easier than ever for fruit and vegetable farmers to secure funding.
