Utilizing a centuries old Japanese technique known as 手捺染 ("te nassen", or Hand Printing), the discharge dyed Aloha shirt motif is achieved by a slow and meticulous process of hand printing each block of the fabric by hand. The effect of "te nassen" printing versus a standard screen print is it gives the fabric an added layer of texture, similar to a subtle jacquard. The aloha pattern featured through the shirt pays homage to Japan's oldest recorded cartoon in history, known as 鳥獣戯画 ("Choju Giga" or the "Bird of the Beast").
