🙈 Oh I wish the design development phase was as easy as 1, 2, 3, 4! 💡There's a number of steps in-between but these are 4 core steps that take you from idea to final product and I wanted to show you how that works with a real life brand! This is Hollow Stem, they wanted to create a pyjama set that was inspired by the founders medical background. An undershirt they wore in the hospital under scrubs was actually the inspiration for this set, super soft, stretchy, breathable AND antimicrobial 🙌 ⚡️Step 1 - Fabric Choosing your fabric is crucial, you want it to be fit for purpose (don't choose a wool tweed for pyjamas!) have the benefits you want (breathable) and if you're opting for CMT, you'll need to source it too. ⚡️Step 2 - Inspiration It's great to show your technical designer as well as factory, some inspiration images that reflect fit so we are all on the same page about the way the garment is supposed to fit. ⚡️Step 3 - Sketch Time to create the technical sketches and supplementary sketches that convey construction methods to your factory. 🏷GARMENT LABELS 🏷 Start up brands are often confused on what kind of labelling they need for their products. Some labels are compulsory while others tend to be optional: ⚡️Brand & Size Often these are one and the same or at least attached to each other. These are necessary to tell your customer where they bought their product from and which size they purchased - not forgetting they may need this information years after purchasing and without it, you could be losing out on sales! Of course heat stamps are an alternative but as above, think about the longevity. ⚡️Care Label The care label tells the customer how to care for their product, including wash information. Another (mostly) compulsory one here - exactly what needs to be included will depend on where you're based and who you're selling to and you CAN get in trouble for not having the correct info! ⚡️Branding Tabs Completely optional but can be a lovely way to include discreet branding directly on your product. ⚡️HANGTAGS/SWINGTAGS Optional really however they do tend to be the most cost effective way to communicate anything else you feel your customer needs to know. 🫣Honesty time - Who can see the difference in these two greens? 👍🏻👎🏻 On screen the difference is incredibly subtle but they are exist as different shades for a reason! If you know a little about Pantones, you'll know these references refer to the shade dyed on Cotton (TCX means cotton.) Every screen is a calibrated slightly differently which is why you can never rely solely on what the colour looks like on a screen. Always order the actual shade on a cotton swatch and look at under natural light to assess the shade. In real life, Jasmine Green has a noticeably brighter hue with a yellow undertone while Green Flash is slightly flatter and smoother in tone. Not clear on Pantones and how to use them to your advantage - especially as a start up? ✨START UP TIPS! ✨ As a start up, you are not going to be able to charge high street prices and here's a couple of reasons why:⁣ ⚡️You will have a lower order quantity which increases the cost per product. ⚡️You will not be able to benefit from economies of scale the way a high street brand can - you only have 1 store (online or physical) while high street brands have multiple. One store may operate at a loss for them but that doesn't mean their business is operating at a loss. If your 1 store is operating at a loss, your whole business is operating at a loss. 💡You are not a high street brand, you shouldn't be operating like one and they are not your competitor (yet! 😉) If your customer can get the same quality product from a high street store, pay less for it than you charge and it arrives quicker than you can ship it, you're not giving your customer a reason to buy from you. Fabric sourcing can be a mine field and if you want to do CMT manufacturing you won't have help from factory. Even if you're doing FPP manufacturing, you'll still have to give factory the parameters or "qualities" of the fabrics you want them to source. If watch project Runway, Next in Fashion or even the Great British Sewing Bee, you might think you should be heading to your nearest fabric or haberdashery for all your fabrics and trims - but think again! You need to look higher on the production chain for the raw materials for your collection so you have the selection you need as well as a better price! A restaurant wouldn't buy their stock from Tesco, they go to a wholesaler and it's a similar situation for you. When starting to short list your fabric choices, look at what similar products are made from and don't be afraid to buy and try! You might not know whether you prefer 24% stretch vs 8% stretch in a sports bra, which fiber composition gives you the support you want without feeling too tight. Keep looking at labels and take notes on which fiber content works for you. There's no need to be shy about budget! I get it, you want to get a good price and be sure you're not being ripped off - but let me tell you, if you're concerned a freelancer is going to rip you off and you can't see the worth in their work, you're choosing the wrong freelancer for you! The price per garment is the price. There's no negotiation or extortion involved. The reason a freelancer needs to know your budget is because there's zero point in creating a proposal for complex designs your budget is no where near able to afford. Knowing your budget means a freelancer can help you spend it the best way possible, to maximise it and invest it in the areas that you will see the most reward from. It also makes the proposals realistic and avoids wasting time creating un realistic proposals, only to have a conversation about your actual budget later on. Really to talk budgets?
