With the reveal of the electric G-Class happening tomorrow night, I thought I’d share my photos from the 2018 Detroit Auto Show reveal of the new-generation G-Class. Yes, that is Arnold Schwarzenegger with Dieter Zetsche, and yes, they are wearing cowboy hats that Arnold brought. The reveal was in Detroit’s historic Michigan Theatre, which is now a parking garage that has retained the original Renaissance Revival ceilings. Mercedes constructed a huge stage that the G-wagens drove up, then followed by pyrotechnics. Arnold came out afterwards and surprised Dr. Z with those hats, and he was off script almost immediately. He talked about coming from Graz just like the G-wagen, and how whenever the G got stronger, he got stronger too. Then he was doing shots of Schnapps with people after the presentation was over and the party began. DID YOU KNOW that Audi was planning on releasing a V12 diesel version of the R8 in the late 2000s? Audi had unveiled a groundbreaking concept at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show – the Audi R8 V12 TDI. This sports car boasted the first 12-cylinder diesel engine in a high-performance road vehicle, generating 500 horsepower and an impressive 1,000 Newtonmeters of torque. Derived from the Audi R10 race engine, it propelled the R8 from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.2 seconds with a top speed exceeding 300 km/h. The V12 TDI incorporated advanced features like a 60-degree included angle, a chain drive layout, and a sophisticated common rail injection system. Built on Audi’s success in motorsports, particularly the Le Mans-winning R10 diesel engine, the V12 TDI benefited from ultramodern injection technology and a unique drivetrain layout. The engine, developed in Hungary, emphasized compactness and efficiency. The car’s design included a glass roof, and LED headlights, showcasing Audi’s commitment to both aesthetics and functionality. The concept car’s lighting system offered improved visibility at night, reducing driver fatigue. Overall, the Audi R8 V12 TDI concept represented a significant leap in diesel technology, merging high performance with cutting-edge design. Unfortunately only one of these cars were ever produced as the executives at Audi deemed the project to be infeasible due to the immense costs of re-engineering parts of the R8 to fit the huge V12 along with it still being slower and more expensive than the V10 petrol version. The organizers of the Detroit auto show are preparing to announce that the event is moving back to its traditional January slot from the late September dates it had occupied the past couple of years, according to two sources familiar with the information who were not authorized to speak publicly on the subject. The last North American International Auto Show in January was held in 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic. Organizers had proposed moving the show to the summer to showcase Detroit during its warmer months, allow for outdoor activities and provide a more festival-like approach, as auto shows in general faced challenges. The internet has made it easier for customers to research products.
