National day of the midwife🫶🏼 Today is a special day. I sit here and reminisce on the incredible births that I have been able to attend through my career as a midwife. As your partner supports you physically and emotionally the love hormone (oxytocin) begin to flow through the body. Oxytocin can bring more continuous contractions and can greatly help you in the pushing phase as well as lactation. Sooo cool! A good mindset to have in life and even in birth. Fear is something we all naturally have. Our fears may differ from person to person, but at the end of the day we all have fear of some sort. When it comes to birth.. processing fear before you go into labor is something I encourage my clients to do. If you don’t process your questions and your fears about birth it could negatively impact your birth. Fear can stall your birth. Fear is okay to have going into something that is unknown and as your midwife I am here to offer you support in processing any fears you may have with evidence based information. I am here to do this with you. You are not alone. Fear has no place in birth. So often women surround birth with this idea that it’s something to fear and that is because birth has become a medical intervention rather then a natural physiological process. So feel the fear that’s okay, but remember the facts, the statistics, the evidence. It’s your birth story, not your moms.. not your grandmas… not the mom you met at the park today. Deal with the fear and do it anyways momma. Let’s talk birth team. Birth is intimate, it is real, raw, and primal. I often have clients ask me, who should I have in my birth space ?? My answer; anyone you’d feel comfortable pooping in-front of. It’s important that you only welcome people into your birth space that support you and that you feel truly comfortable with being in your space.
