Yamanote Rain [3/3] 🟢 Komagome > Tōkyō 5.1.2024 Tokyo’s JR Yamanote line runs in a circuit with 30 stops, and on a rainy day this week I rode the full loop — boarding at JY30 Yūrakuchō, taking one photo for every stop. It’s so easy as photographers or artists to get hung up on getting the “perfect shot” or otherwise get in our own way with overthinking or perfectionism. I did this shoot because, well, I love trains — but also to free myself to shoot in a new way, not just shooting in color (with an eye for green) but also with a mind to tell a spontaneous story. Some of these shots I’d never post on their own, but all together I find them beautiful. Aside from micro crops, they’re straight out of the camera — shot on a custom Positive Film-based Ricoh GRIII recipe. The last of the full 30-stop loop was Tōkyō Station and I stayed on here to get off where I started at Yūrakuchō. Orange County Scenes Consequences, acrylic on canvas, 24" x 30" A drive through cigarette shop in Garden Grove, CA. I named this Consequences since it seemed to me everything in this view was a consequence of something else. The shop is selling cigarettes as a consequence of film having become obsolete (this was originally a drive-thru photo processing shop). The former Denny's is now a Vietnamese restaurant as a consequence of the influx of Vietnamese. And what consequences led to the young man's dishevelment and bad posture we can only guess. FOA Preview: Garage Sale, acrylic on canvas, 23" x 37". Here's a little preview of a painting for my upcoming show at the Laguna Beach Festival of Arts, opening July 5. Garage Sale is based on a photo I took in San Clemente, CA a few years ago. The ladies on the left and right were in the original shot. I wanted to add a figure of a girl coming back from the beach, who has stopped to check out the display. Eventually I found the appropriate figure, a nice contrast with the pale proprietor and the serious shopper. Painting all the garage sale junk was a challenge, though by chipping away at it I finally got it all down. Never thought I'd be painting Trader Joe bags. Having looked at the collection closely, I can attest there are no treasures here.
