Obviously, we always want to win. A pair of mechanical failures took that possibility away from us at The 25. However, I can't think of many races I've been a part of that had a finish as memorable as this one. The #24 car was supposed to be our primary contender for the race, but a transmission/clutch problem took it out of contention within the first few hours, putting it over 40 laps down. That meant #25 had to go for gold. We powered through the night and the rain in 2nd, catching the leader little by little. We got as close as 27 seconds behind, when a fog delay stopped the race for 4 hours. When the race restarted later in the morning, it became immediately clear that #25 had an engine problem. Little by little the power and revs were disappearing until the car could barely push itself down the straights, almost 30 seconds down on normal pace. It was still in 2nd place, but the gap back to 3rd was vanishing quickly. I was in #24 for the last few hours (setting the fastest lap of the race for E2...and E1...and E0!) just having a good time and bringing the car to the finish, when I received the call that @mattmillionracing needed a boost. So, for the final 40 minutes of the race, I literally pushed #25 down every straight - worth between 7 and 9 seconds per lap! ...and it almost worked. With just 15 minutes left, @moorewoodcreative's #73 car passed us, putting us in 3rd. Had we started pushing a little sooner, who knows? We might have kept 2nd. Still, to get a podium with a car whose engine spent the last SIX HOURS trying to die was a huge accomplishment, and very emotional for all of us. Kevin, David, and Blair all thrashed on this thing last night and this morning to dress the new used engine, repair the oil pan, and stuff it in the car...and take a few pounds out too. We're still underpowered, but this engine feels much smoother...somehow, it allows the transmission to shift faster. Massive thank you to @edge_motorworks for being instrumental in getting #25 back on track. I started the race from the back of a 17 car field, and made it up to 6th. Not a terrible starting place for tomorrow's main. Herculean effort by all of @palomar_racing. We're not giving up yet. Meanwhile, Matt led his qual race flag to flag. Friday/Saturday NASA Championship update. Hectic and crazy, but well controlled so far. 1. #25 engine oil pump failure Friday practice, engine broken. Engine swap complete Saturday morning. @nikromanoracing comes back from last (P18) to P6 in quali race. Still everything to play for, especially with rain in the forecast. 2. #24 @mattmillionracing earns pole position Friday and wins Saturday quali race by over 20 seconds. It's been a ridiculous week. @ustcc at @weathertechraceway Fri/Sat/Sun was successful and informative for Team Palomar. Matt won both of his races in SP. I got a 4th and a 3rd in ST - normally I'd not be thrilled with those finishes, but considering I was 200+hp down on the rest of the field, and we were all doing the same lap times...I think it went quite well 😁. Mon/Tues/Wed I was back in SoCal working he SEMA measuring session on the new GR Corolla. I started in E1, starting in 3rd and moving up to 2nd on the first lap. Edge Motorworks led, and did a bit of a vanishing act. I was trying to conserve fuel and tires for a while, and made a big mistake - I let the Rearden 370Z go by, for some reason assuming it was an E0 car. I was sadly mistaken. Shortly after, I got the call to “push a little harder,” which I nearly did…until a full course yellow came out. During this yellow I realized my mistake, and knew I’d have to push to make that position back. It went green, and push I did…and so did Rearden. It turned into an all-out dogfight between us, as we weaved our way through (and nearly into, in the Z’s case) the slower traffic. The Z turned up the aggression higher than I think I’ve ever seen in an endurance race. Even though I could catch in every turn, passing the more powerful car was tough. Eventually I filled the Z’s mirror hard enough that the driver began making mistakes, and I pounced when they mis-shifted in traffic. I set my pace to very gently creep away until my fuel ran out. My stint flew by. Bittner drove next, and despite a few radio comm issues drove a clean, fast race, holding our position in 2nd. Keely took over on lap 67 for his stint, and with some excellent conservation-at-speed and phenomenal pit stops, crept us into the lead of E1! Matt hopped in for the final stint, and our perfect run of pit stops came to a gut-wrenching end. As soon as the fuel jug locked into the dry-break, a splash of gas coughed out of the breather and onto the ground. Not a lot…but enough for the officials to penalize us 5 whole laps. Of course, this took us out of contention. We told Matt to keep pushing regardless, and to get back to physical 1st. Looking at the photo of the small spill, 5 laps seemed excessive. Andy went to work appealing, a process that he would take right up until there were only 15 minutes remaining. In a last-ditch effort, he walked into the tower with his photo to show the race director himself - who rolled his eyes, told Andy to get lost, and immediately revoked the penalty! We crossed the line with ~45 seconds over Edge. Talk about an emotional rollercoaster

THE ENDURO (The E2 Story) We knew going in that this would be a big challenge for us, being our first time running two cars and this many drivers. We were very confident in the whole team, especially after sending all drivers out for practice on Friday, and spending Saturday evening doing driver change/pitstop exercises - but when it comes down to it, you never really know how an endurance race will go until you are in the thick of it…and even then, you never REALLY know how it will go until it’s over, and in our case, not until a week after. Matt started in E2 and almost immediately noticed that the car lost a big chunk of HP. Even so, if we could keep pace we’d still be in good shape for the race. He passed the car off to Lucas, who managed the damaged engine great…until he noticed the shifter started to feel funny. Lucas passed the car to Sonny, and Sonny made it only a few laps before the shifter came COMPLETELY DISCONNECTED. He somehow managed to force the trans into 4th, and came in. And now, the car was in Kevin’s hands. Armed with tow straps, an angle grinder, and a wheeled dolly that gave its life for the greater good, Kevin hacked together a ghetto fix that allowed Sonny the use of 3rd and 4th, and sent him back on his way. We were way down on time and position now, but we’re in it for the points, and any points are better than none. Sonny cruised along doing 2:17s and 2:18s with only two gears for THE REST OF THE RACE. Originally I was to take the final stint, but there wasn’t a chance we were taking Sonny out. It was his car. We crossed the line in 4th, after spending an hour in the pits. Kevin and Sonny were the heroes of the Palomar pit, salvaging a seriously respectable finish from the brink. And then, we got word that 1st place had been DQ’d, putting us onto the podium. And then a week later, we got word that that had been a mistake. Oh well, 4th is still pretty rad, and helped us to stay 1st in points!
The @palomar_racing team is killing it this season in the NASA SoCal ST5 and E2 endurance class. Congrats to the whole team on a multi class win at the NASA Utah event last weekend. Half way through the season, they’ve got a strong lead on the ST5 regional points and have taken the podium on three out of four NASA WERC endurance events running in E2. Now with a second car in the mix, Palomar will be competing in both ST4 & ST5 as well as E1 and E2 endurance classes. With a shiny new race hauler and a nice selection of APEX wheels the team is poised for a strong finish to the 2022 season. Best of luck to the team in the coming events!
Saturday Sprints! On Saturday, I drove #25 in its pseudo-ST4 trim. That is to say, we took out the restrictor and the ballast and slapped on some R7s, and called it “good enough.” We’re still almost 30hp down from where we COULD be, but the hope was that what we lacked in oomph we’d make up for in zippyness. And yes, these are technical terms. Quali was frustrating; every time I’d get close to a clean lap (with 2:06s on predictive!) I’d get blocked by another car. The best I could manage was a 2:08, putting me in 3rd. But, the car felt phenomenal, and seeing that P1’s time was a 2:07, I knew I’d have something for them in the race…as long as I could find a way around the more powerful cars. The race was fantastic. It was a 4-way battle for the lead between me, another E36 with a similar makeup (all corner speed, not much “go”), a “medium spec” E46 with good corner speed and good power, and a brute-force muscle car of an E46 with all-power-all-the-time (Toyo RR build in ST4!). It was no easy task getting by the more powerful cars, even with my higher corner speed. Eventually there was a breakaway between me and the green Bavarian Muscle Wagon, and filled his mirror as much as I possibly could, wearing him down until he started making mistakes. Eventually it paid off, and I got my nose far enough along side to clear him - finally in a part of the track with enough turns that I could make a gap too long for him to make up on the front straight. Best believe I’ll be posting this one on YT. Matt had a much simpler race in ST5 in #24 - there was only one other car in class, and Matt was about 5 seconds quicker per lap. I got to have the fun Saturday, and Sunday we’d swap cars. Latepost and Longpost warning! @palomarracing went to @utahmotorsportscampus the other weekend for a spot of Sprint racing, and an enormous Enduro…ok, 6 hours, but the longest enduro we’ve done yet! This story is best told with a bit of detail, so here’s part 1. Getting to the track was a challenge in and of itself, between losing the drive belts on the rig before even leaving the shop, and losing a trailer tire many hours into the trip. Problems are made to be solved, and solved they were. We arrived in Utah on Thursday, and were set up and ready to go for Friday practice early the next morning. Being that this was a much longer race, we brought more drivers with us. @mattmillionracing and I were now joined by @itsalwayssonnyonthepodium, @rkmotorsport, @bittnerracing, and @lucas.racing1, all to take stints in the enduro between the two cars. #24 is now the ST5/E2 car, and #25 has been upgraded to compete in ST4/E1. Every driver would take stints throughout the day to learn the cars, and in my and Lucas’ case, drive the track for the first time ever. We finished off the night with some driver change practice, and tweaked some of the in-car accoutrements to speed things up.
