Some of you have been asking about the Kersey I’ve been layering under my 33-T all year. Here it is in all its glory. It’s been protected by 12oz selvedge all year, so it doesn’t have as many scars as its companion, but the collar and cuffs really show what this shirt can do when pushed. For the first time, we’re allowing leather into the Redline Rally. We want to give the folks who bring leather pieces into the Rally the best possible shot at producing a beautifully patinated piece inside of a year, so we’re keeping things light: leather pieces have to be natural leather, and they must be unlined. This opens the door to some stellar pieces. Our favourite is Iron Heart x Simmons Bilt’s Pale Rider, which can, with some gritting and gnashing of teeth, be worn year round in temperate climates. If you’re looking for a jacket, there are two eligible pieces we can recommend wholeheartedly. Mister Freedom’s Natural Campus Jacket leads the pack, but Shangri-La’s Natural Cossack jacket is nipping at its heels. For this first experiment, we’re going to be firm on the natural and unlined restrictions. If we get enough interest, we may look at adding lined leather jackets as their own category, but we see these pieces as a decade-long project. What really draws the eye here is not just the incredible work that our man Ruds has done on the sleeves. It’s the repeating semi-circular patterns on the bottom half of the jacket that show how the jacket sits on his frame, folding up when he’s seated. It’s the kind of subtle and eye-catching fade pattern that simply can’t be replicated. Our judges were drawn to this one for many reasons. Chief among them was the fact that we rarely see Type 1s given this heavy a treatment. Thiticha’s stellar result makes a strong case for those considering pieces that we don’t see regularly in the competition. Brent was one of our wildcard picks, and our judges saw the sane things that we saw in this truly remarkable Secret Denim Coverall. It might be the finest piece of Secret Denim we’ve ever seen in any of our competitions, and we were thrilled to see that Brent elbowed his way into the Top Five. This one (our bronze medalist) was like a rocket-ship from day one of the Redline Rally. James erects houses, working insanely long days and proving that even the wildest contrast fades are within reach for faders far from the equator. We knew this one would place highly. It might be the best 526 we’ve ever seen—and we see a lot of them in the Rally. This is the perfect marriage of worker and workwear maker. James took a great prize off the board. Our gold medalist absolutely cruised through every round, but it was when our judges put his fades under the microscope that he shot to the very top. I am finally coming to accept that this is real. It’s really just nuts. I honestly really love my jacket. I knew I put every drop of effort I had in this jacket and this year of fading. While we’re waiting for our judges to give us our results, we want to pause for a moment to look at some of our fallen heroes. We’ve only got a couple of spot prizes to give away this year, and all of those who didn’t make the Top 10 will be eligible. These folks will definitely be in the running. 1) the first two come courtesy of our Y3 II champion and our man Hein, who both produced incredible results with very hard-to-fade fabrics. Wabash and black denim are no joke. 2) the next two are all about the cuffs. Eduardo’s cuffs very nearly pulled him into the Top 20 (seriously, check them out), and Jon’s shredded cuffs have earned him a tip of the hat and then some. 3) Kat and Zachary both earned their top 50 slots with their fades, but they’ve earned a special place in our hearts for wearing their own hand-made creations into the comp. They’ve set a new standard for homemade fades. 4) Finally, we want to recognize two of the bluest blue collar fades we’ve ever seen in the Rally. Dane and Bryan both worked the hell out of their pieces. This shirt may not be eligible for the Top 50, and it’s miles back from the leading pack, but, based on what I’ve seen, it’d be sniffing around that 45-50 range. It’s been an absolute pleasure fading along with all of you. We started this competition to help us all up our fade game, and it’s done that and more for me. I hope it’s done the same for you.
