Ali didn't work out at the combine due to the injury, but chipped in some big plays across his college career. Averaged 5.4-5.6 yards per carry in his two seasons as a starter, and was very productive in the passing game. He caught 73 balls for 547 yards in those years, and totaled 40 touchdowns. 6 out of the 10 RBs to hit these metrics ranked inside the Top 10 during the 2023 season. The remaining 4 players (Barkley, Pollard, Jacobs & Williams) are all in prime position to see similar volume next season and could be considered "buy" candidates. One of my favorite buy-low candidate for me is Javonte Williams (DEN), who will be two years removed from his season-ending knee injury and I believe is still the most talented back for the Broncos. He will be entering his contract year with a rookie QB, which makes me think Payton will likely lean on the run game and screen passes to the backs. 🔥 I can see why people are split on AD Mitchell, and I myself was split on him at times. It really boils down to whether you are a numbers and metrics person, or a film and game person. His athletic metrics are awesome from the combine. But the numbers as far as production are pretty bad. He hit under the threshold for a lot of important metrics including Yards/RR, an important stat that typical indicate success at the next level. But, the film doesn’t lie. He’s great at getting open, he’s super reliable, and he is absolutely a clutch player. He could be a QB’s best friend. I tend to lean more towards the eye test, only because stats like Yards/RR are based off exactly as it sounds, yards per routes run. But if he’s in an offense where he is underutilized, that number is bound to be lower. So I liked Mitchell. I think especially with his increased involvement in the snap he could play the X/Alpha WR1 role in the NFL. I am also interested to see his reception perception numbers as far as win rates vs man, zone, and press coverage. That will be very telling. 🔥 Brian Thomas will likely have a very specialized role in the NFL. He’s a taller guy, but he isn’t great at contested catches and doesn’t always use his size like he should. He’s fast and good at getting open, but he uses his body too much when catching the ball. Which results in a low catch rate. He’s really just a burner from what I can tell. But that’s ok because at his size, there will be plenty of teams looking to add someone like that. If you pair him with a QB with a good arm, he can be deadly. But I don’t think he would thrive as a team’s WR1. He’d be better suited for a Gabe Davis type role, which is why I would love to see him in Buffalo. 🔥 I was really shocked by @mattharmon_byb and his review on Rome Odunze. If you aren’t aware, Matt Harmon does in depth reviews and charts every single one of the WR routes on his reception perception website. The stuff on that site is gold and I highly recommend checking it out! All that to say, Odunze tested above average in every single one of his routes as far as win rate. He also hit above the 80th percentile in Zone, Man, and press coverage. Which is a great spot to be in. But altogether, Odunze is more dominant than MHJ or Nabers, and he is easily the best deep threat in this class. But if Nabers improves his route running technique, relies more on his hands, and is more aggressive at high pointing the ball, in my eyes he would be a better prospect than MHJ. 🔥 For the last RB we talk about, we have Frank Gore Jr. I will say that he is overall a good back. But that was also in Souther Miss, and the competition is dog shit. It doesn’t mean he isn’t capable in the NFL, but the last Southern Miss RB to be drafted was Ito Smith back in 2017, who was arguably more productive at Southern Miss and he was a 4th Rounder. I just think Gore is tied to Day 3 capitol, and even if he does make an NFL roster, he will have to work his way up the depth chart, which I’m also not sure he will be able to do. The great thing about him is that he is a good pass catcher, he can contribute on special teams, and I’ll even add some desperate QB ability as the cherry on top as far as being able to contribute as more than just a RB.
