What’s the deal with the “Fatty Ati” name? For starters, Ati is our family’s last name. But there’s also a long tradition of all our cousins loving to eat. Any time you looked up, someone was chowing down on something, so we’d lovingly scream “Fatty Ati!” any time someone held a heaping plate of something delicious. And in our house, there was always something delicious on the stove. Listen, could we polish off a bucket of KFC hot wings in under 15 minutes? Naturally. But we always appreciated the art of crafting incredible dishes - the symphony of spices and flavors all playing their part. It’s called range, baby. Meet the team! 🫶🏾 Maya & Manisha are cousins tied at the hip. Maya spent the pandemic learning the South Indian dishes she grew up eating from her mother, turning “a pinch or two of this and that” into recipes to be honed and recreated. Cooking South Indian food always felt so daunting to me, so I never attempted it. Long ingredient lists, too many steps, and the fear that I’d never ace a dish (that my mom could nail on her worst day, with her eyes closed) stopped me from even trying. That is, until the pandemic forced my parents and I into my small apartment for 6 months (a trauma for another time, ha). It was in this shared space that I asked my mom to write down every recipe for the Andhra and Karnataka dishes that I grew up eating. For someone who measures ingredients in “pinches” and “up to the first bone of your pinky finger,” this was initially a challenge. What started for posterity turned into a meaningful cooking journey that we embarked on together. And not only was it not scary anymore, it felt beautiful and solid. I was cooking our family’s dishes next to my mother the same way she had learned - standing next to my grandmother. We hope you feel that love and dedication in all of our dishes. 🐟🇮🇳🍋‍🟩 Hamachi Crudo in cilantro water with fermented lime pickle, lime zest, crushed black pepper & cilantro. The final plating to this dish also included a lemon, Kashmiri chili oil, and we opted for individual plating so everyone could soak up all those delicious flavors. Served at Dinner 001.
