Vicki Pemberton is an Army Veteran. She served in the Reserves for eight years with one deployment as a nurse. She has always been crafty, but she didn’t start painting until she attended an art class as a college elective back in the '80s. She was very excited about her first painting, as primitive as she thought it was, so she decided to pursue it further. She spent a few years experimenting in oils, mostly landscapes and ocean scenes, but became very busy raising her three boys and working, so painting was put on hold until about five years ago. While she was searching online for a picture to hang in her house, she stumbled across an artist that used alcohol ink in her paintings. She absolutely fell in love with the flowing, vibrant colors and decided she needed to try it herself. Soon after, she discovered fluid art with acrylics. With this style, she feels no pressure, only freedom to allow the paint to come alive, hopefully creating a unique piece of art that will spark positive emotions for the viewer. She is constantly experimenting with new techniques. Her latest creations are semi-abstract ocean scenes using resin. Vicki feels that there is something soothing about an ocean wave and the contrast of the whites and blues. If ever she is feeling down or bored, especially during COVID, she steps into her garage, which has been converted into her studio, and immerses herself in her next project. Taft is an active first grader at Felida Elementary who is the youngest of five kids and seems to go non-stop. Taft’s love of sports began young, and he has been playing baseball with his older brothers since he could walk. This spring finds Taft playing in the SCLL AA Little League division. Taft’s favorite positions on the baseball diamond are pitcher and first base. Taft is a dedicated Yankee fan who records games so he can “watch game film” later and wants to be just like Aaron Judge, his favorite Yankee, when he grows up. Although Taft prefers to play baseball year-round, when he is not playing baseball, you would most likely find him hitting wiffle balls into the neighbor’s yard; riding his bike around the neighborhood; trying to talk the family dog, Roosevelt (Rosie), into the swimming pool; snowboarding with his big brothers; or digging for worms in the backyard with mom’s good spoons. Taft’s “management team” consists of his mother, Esther Jording Hawkins, Yankee Team Assistant Coach; his step-dad, Jeremy Hawkins, Yankee Team Coach; his dad, Lance Jording; and his godparent, Bill Barlow. Taft's siblings describe him as a nonstop bundle of energy that wears them out on a daily basis. The family attributes Taft’s success on the field and in the classroom to a combination of his own personal drive coupled with his ability to listen and his desire to improve his performance. Taft Jording is definitely one of the developing Felida athletes to keep an eye on. #StrollFelida #FelidaFineLiving #AthleteofTheMonth #TaftJording #WrittenByContentManagerMichelleZabell #SponsoredBy Lake Shore Athletic Club

Evelyn Reed is a current freshman at Skyview High School and has achieved many impressive feats in cross country. In school, one of her favorite “projects” that she does regularly in Honors/Pre AP English is Socratic seminars. Evelyn explains, “The day before the seminar, students put ideas into a hat with the topics we want to debate on so it’s always current, and the matters are actually of interest to us. I find it fun to try to prove a point!” Outside of the classroom, she loves cross country and track — she was voted captain for next year’s cross country season! One of her favorite things about school is the social aspect of it, and when school was remote in the past, it was hard to have all of the communication cut off with her friends so quickly. Fortunately, now that school is back in-person, she says it’s easier for her to focus on her homework and sports because she is not missing out on social time with her friends. Before she began her high school sports career, she had the record for the 400 (1:01) and the 800 (2:38) at Thomas Jefferson Middle School. She was voted by teachers and staff to earn the Ambassador award in her eighth-grade year, and she won! In 2021, Evelyn got second place in the 4A districts for cross country, and she achieved the record for the second-fastest freshman in the 25-year history of Skyview for cross country (5K with a time of 18:55). She also raised the most money out of all the girls on the cross country team last year for the fundraiser to be able to travel to meets overnight for a team trip. Evelyn has raced in the cross country Junior Olympics in 2020 and 2019. This last winter, she was then seeded to run in the championship race for Nike XC in Idaho. Evelyn's parents volunteer at her school sporting events, donate to local causes, and love to support the small non-chain businesses around town. In the future, Evelyn considers careers as a family law attorney, some kind of doctor, a therapist or psychiatrist, or an interior designer. #FelidaFineLiving #June2022 #AthleteOfTheMonth #EvelynReed #WrittenByAnnaliseSelby #SponsoredBy Lake Shore Athletic Club

Cheyenne Leonard is a teacher at Messiah Lutheran Preschool, and she currently teaches beginner three-day morning and afternoon classes for the 3- and 4-year-olds. She has been working in education since 2014, and she began working as an assistant at Messiah in the Pre-K classes as well as working with the beginner classes. The following year she was offered a lead teacher role and has worked with both age groups throughout her career. During the summer months, she volunteers her time to teach vacation bible school to preschool-aged children (aged 3 to 5) that Messiah Lutheran Church and Preschool offers the community to participate in. At school, Cheyenne’s goal is to focus on the needs and the potential of each student as well as their emotional, social, cognitive, physical, and spiritual development. She guides creativity, encourages innovative thinking, acknowledges perseverance, turns frustration into learning opportunities, and models fairness. Cheyenne encourages the children to embrace who they are, so they can achieve their fullest potential in interpersonal relationships, work, and play. She explained, “This leads me to be able to maintain an atmosphere that is positive, peaceful, and productive.” At home, Cheyenne has two children — London, age 13, and Hunter, age 11 — both of whom are Messiah Lutheran alumni. They also have a pet fish, Luke Suckwater (in honor of their love of Star Wars), and a cat they rescued named Bella. Cheyenne loves going out and trying new things, whether it may be new places to eat or something more adventurous such as doing canopy tours or climbing from treetop to treetop. She is a lover of Star Wars, coffee, hiking, and kayaking. Over the summer, Cheyenne hopes to see her students play. She describes, "There are so many benefits for little learners within play. Be brave, take risks, and always be curious.” #FelidaFineLiving #June2022 #EducationMatters #CheyenneLeonard #WrittenBySophieZabell

Are you familiar with the Captain Underpants series? A series that has delighted children (even if not so much their parents) for quite some time. Did you know that the author, Dav Pilkey has other graphic novel comic series? One of his most recent ones is Dog Man. From that series, Dav has created a spin-off called Cat Kid Comic Club. Cat Kid Comic Club follows Li’l Petey and his best friend, Molly, as they start a club to teach their members to draw comics. The members of this new club are 21 funny, creative, and energetic baby frogs who are eager to be a part of this new club. These strong-minded characters learn how to take what they know and add a little bit of imagination and humor to create laugh-out-loud comics that will delight children ages 7–9. The story begins with the initial meeting introducing the President, L’il Petey, and Vice President, Molly. Li’l Petey and Molly hilariously try to have their writers generate a list of ideas. When the frogs push back for lack of ideas and an overwhelming sense of fear to begin, Molly and Li’l Petey encourage them to get over their fears. In fact, the homework is to fail! They want their members to write a terrible comic that will embarrass them. All the members leave the meeting pumped up and ready to go out and create the biggest disastrous comic they can. The next day, all the baby frogs return feeling accomplished that they have indeed met the goal of creating a dismal comic. After listening to each other’s comics, the baby frogs realize they have failed at failing — their writing is quite good. However, the comics are filled with potty humor, which the children find hilarious, but their dad does not. Embedded in all the potty jokes are great lessons for young readers. This entire comic book serves as a reminder to all adults who work with children that children need silly avenues to learn about failure, trying new things, and making sense of growing up. Happy reading! Sheila #FelidaFineLiving #June2022 #KidsBookReview #CatKidComicClub #WrittenbyDavPilkey #ReviewedBySheilaSwiderek

It was only after becoming a mother myself that I began to understand what it means to “mother.” Mothering is a verb – daily actions that we take to care for, love, and support the children in our lives. The Best Mother introduces us to a little girl named Maxine. Maxine wakes up one morning extremely disgruntled over having to wash her face, brush her teeth, and comb her hair. Maxine’s mother asks her what she is going to do today. Maxine announces, “I’m going to get a new mother!” Maxine’s mother validates her plan but gently reminds her to take her sun hat because it is going to be a hot day. This gentle reminder kicks off Maxine’s list of what she does not want in her new mother. Maxine sets off for the park, toy store, and zoo. However, her “old mother” must take her because she does not know how to get there. As Maxine sets out on her search for a new mother, she bounces ahead of her old one. While Maxine boldly goes up to various mothers asking “If you were my mother” questions, her own mother watches from a distance, allowing her girl the freedom to make discoveries on her own. At the zoo, Maxine observes the animal mothers and all the wonderful ways in which they care for their babies. The illustrations in this beautiful book show Maxine’s thoughts as she compares the ways in which the animal mothers care for their babies and the ways in which her very own mother does the same. Maxine recognizes how her mother cares for her by taking care of her hair, bandaging up her scratches, creating fun ways to clean up, and playing with her. #FelidaFineLiving #May2022 #WrittenByCMSurrisi #IllustratedByDianeGoode #ReviewedBySheilaSwirderek

Meet Kona! She is a 19-month-old canine member of the Beston family. Kona was born on September 19th, 2020, and is a purebred Akita. They were originally used for guarding royalty and nobility in feudal Japan. She is brindle color with white socks, and a white patch on her chest shaped like a heart. The brindle pattern typically appears as black stripes on a red base, but there can be variations of it. Samantha Beston said, "Kona came to our family from Tablerock Akitas in Southern Oregon. We brought Kona home at 10 weeks old." Kona was a surprise for her all-boy family after the loss of their Akita named Kahlua. Kona is a sweet and gentle girl with the kiddos and is loving to all who come to the Beston home. She is described as protective and loyal as most Akitas are. Independent and sometimes aloof with strangers, Akitas are affectionate with their families and form strong bonds. She is unique in that she adores retrieving/fetching balls and other toys. That is not typically common for an Akita. Kona loves to snuggle and has claimed an ottoman in the Beston home as her chair. She is most comfortable sprawled out on her belly with legs stretched out like a frog. Kona self grooms like a cat licking her paws and washing her face. Akitas are known to groom themselves like a cat, are clean, and housebreaking is usually not a problem. Kona loves to greet her family standing on her hind legs with her front paws up on her human's shoulders. She can often be found sitting in the window watching her human brothers as they play outside with friends. #FelidaFineLiving #April2022 #PreciousPets #Kona #BestonFamily #WrittenByJuliaZabell #SponsoredBy Paulson's Floor Coverings Vancouver

Love your Zuppa but don’t want the potatoes (aka carbs)? Here ya go, cauliflower chunks instead of potatoes! Oh, the things we can do with cauliflower. Of course, this recipe is most excellent with potatoes too, either way you will love the flavors. INGREDIENTS 1 Tbs olive oil 1 pound ground Italian sausage, mild or spicy, your choice 5 cups organic chicken broth 4 cups cauliflower florets, about half a head of cauliflower, cut into bite-size pieces 5 oz of fresh baby kale (Bagged kale comes in 10 oz bag so plan half of that) 1 can coconut milk (substitute for heavy cream) 1 Tbs each basil and oregano OR 2 Tbs Italian seasoning 1 tsp garlic powder 1/2 tsp salt 1 tsp fresh ground pepper Pinch of red pepper flakes In a large Dutch oven heat the olive oil to medium-high heat. Add the Italian sausage, stir and cook until browned. Add the chicken broth, cauliflower, basil, oregano, garlic powder, salt, pepper and red pepper flakes. Mix well. Bring the soup to a boil, then reduce heat, cover, and allow to simmer for about 20 minutes. Add the kale and coconut milk and simmer an additional 10 minutes until the kale is tender. Test your flavors and add salt and pepper if desired. Enjoy this healthier version of Zuppa. Catherine Miller-Smith started gardening at the tender age of 13 when she planted an herb garden. She first realized that she had a blank slate when she purchased her first home in 1993 and from there, her gardening interest really deepened when she discovered naturescaping, which is the practice of using simple techniques that mimic local biodiversity rather than introducing non-native species or synthetic landscaping. She first became involved with the Wildlife Botanical Gardens when they were looking for a permanent location to install their demonstration gardens. Catherine not only became the secretary of the organization; she volunteered hundreds of hours at the final designated site – installing gravel for the roads, working the soil, laying down compost, planting, and weeding. She is an integral member of their plant sale team for their annual fundraiser and you can find her manning the NatureScaping booth at many local events. When Catherine first moved on to a 2.5-acre property in Felida 15 years ago, she decided it was time to undertake her master gardener training. Over time she has taken many other classes to build up her gardening skills. As part of her gardening journey, she found several Facebook groups devoted to gardening and these provided her with a community that shared her interest in gardening and satisfied her thirst for more gardening knowledge. After one group changed drastically, she decided to start her own Facebook group: SW Washington Area Gardeners (SWAG). At the beginning of the pandemic, the group had about 1,000 members with one to two membership requests a week. With everyone at home, interest in gardening spread and membership increased to over 5,000 today. The group recently received a gift of a large number of gardening books that she is turning into a lending library for the SWAG group. Catherine happily shares her gardening knowledge and best practices with anyone willing to listen so that we can all become better gardeners! #FelidaFineLiving #January2022 #MakingADifference #CatherineMillerSmith #WrittenBySonyaSigler #SponsoredBy Modāo Resale

John and Linda Clausen are long-time residents of Felida. So much so that when they moved here in 1993, their neighborhood was surrounded by open fields and farmland. They have seen so much change in that time – from open fields and Erickson Farms to becoming housing developments to more traffic on the sleepy little road called Lakeshore to the welcome addition of restaurants, stores, Thomas Jefferson Junior High School, and other amenities. They have three sons – Geoff, Kevin, and Pete – who are all adults and live nearby in Vancouver. They also have two MalShi dogs (a mix of Maltese and Shih Tzu), Hunter and Hudson. The Clausens have lived in Felida long enough to experience the addition of Skyview High School. Their two oldest sons attended Columbia River High School and the youngest attended Skyview as they were just on the South end of the new school border. Pete is married to his high school sweetheart, Alicia, who also attended Columbia River. Pete graduated cum laude from Washington State University Vancouver. Alicia has been a part of this loving family for 20 years now. Linda worked at Fort Vancouver Regional Library, taking care of inner-library loans on a domestic and international basis for 25 years. She now cultivates a Facebook group for those interested in MalShi dogs, which has grown to over a thousand people. Linda helps answer questions from dog owners and other MalShi enthusiasts. John was the Director of the Medical Office Administrative Procedures Department at Clark College for 25 years after a career in managing hospital medical records and a stint in the army. He said when he finished basic training, he was one of only three men not sent to combat in Vietnam; instead, he was stationed in Darmstadt, Germany, from 1967-69. An invitation to the Vancouver Symphony (VSO) Gala made all the difference in the world. David Bloom and Michael Liu went to medical school together in Minnesota and during that time, when Michael married Nien-Wei Hsiao, David suggested they honeymoon in the Pacific Northwest and stay in his parents' garage apartment in Vancouver to save money. After medical school, they lost touch with Michael as David and his wife Tammy both spent 20 years as surgeons in the Navy. When Tammy and David exited the Navy and moved back to Vancouver in 2015, they discovered Michael was a family practitioner as well as the VSO pianist. Michael welcomed them back to the area with an invitation to the VSO Gala, and shortly thereafter Tammy and Michael joined the VSO Board and have been stewards of our community orchestra ever since. One of the reasons that keep them engaged in their board roles is the orchestra’s effort to make classical music accessible to everyone in our area, no matter what their background or socio-economic situation is. The focus on music education and bringing music to our schools is important to both David and Tammy, especially in light of funding cuts to the arts. They are impressed by the dedication of people to the arts in Vancouver and how approachable they are. Even though they both have busy and unpredictable schedules, Tammy and David wanted to be able to give back to the community, so they graciously host events in their homes for the musicians and other VSO supporters. After being away from the Vancouver area, these events have been a great way to build connections with the musicians and others. Now that concerts and other events are coming back in person, Tammy and David look forward to connecting with others through the shared experience of live music from our local, world-class orchestra. #FelidaFineLiving #December2021 #MakingADifference #DavidAndTammyBloom #WrittenBySonyaSigler #SponsoredBy Modāo Resale

David Hugo Cantu, who goes by Hugo, attends Valor Global online school and his favorite subjects include math, science, and culinary arts. Hugo enjoys going to school retreats because he gets the opportunity to meet up with his classmates and teachers in person. He explains, “I love my teachers because they are always nice to me and they help me learn.” Hugo began baking when he received a message from his school about registering for a school retreat at the Great Wolf Lodge in Texas. Hugo’s mom saw this as an opportunity to help him learn about life and working hard for things. Hugo and his mom agreed that she would cover the costs of the hotel if he earned the money for his plane ticket to Dallas. Together, Hugo and his mom came up with a plan to use the skills and recipes he learned in Culinary Arts from the last two years to make and sell treats in his neighborhood. Hugo described the treats he sold: “I decided that my menu would have homemade chocolate chip cookies, homemade crepes filled with Nutella or strawberry jelly, homemade bread, and homemade Clafoutis.” Hugo’s dad supervised him to make sure all of the treats turned out well and his mom helped him package the food and deliver them to his neighbors. His mom also taught him to show his customers appreciation by writing personal “Thank You” cards. Hugo was able to reach his goal by earning more than he needed in two weeks; he earned $295 while he only needed $246.96. Hugo said, “Some people were very kind to me and donated money to help me reach my goal because they believed I could do it.” At home, Hugo lives with his dad, mom, sister Viviana, his brother Solomon, and their cute Yorkie named Rollie. He also likes to make clay sculptures, cardboard projects, paper projects, read chapter books and graphic novels, play Mario and Sonic video games, cook and bake, make videos with his brother for his YouTube channel called "The Cantu Artist,” and play with his friends. Hugo thinks about someday working in a bakery and maybe having his own baking business when he’s older. #FelidaFineLiving #December2021 #YoungAchievers #HugoCantu #WrittenBySophiaZabell #SponsoredBySouthwestWashingtonLearningCenter

If December’s precious pet looks familiar to you, it is because her family was featured on the Felida Fine Living’s July cover. We thought she was such a beauty, we decided to give her a special spotlight. Nala, part of the Gallassero-Imperatore family, is a sweet, playful puppy who simply melts anyone's heart who meets her, even though her name might seem a bit regal. Nala is a 2-year-old Purebred Yellow Labrador who came from a breeder in Oregon. Her full name is “Nala of Howard’s Royal” from Buckland Labrador’s. She’s bred from Howard’s Royal Polished Turbo and Howard’s Royal Vanilla ice cream. Laura explained, "We got the name because she’s like a prowling lion (and jumping goat) but the Nala name fit." The Lionesses Nala, Simba's dear friend and betrothed, is bestowed with the name “gift” or “beloved” which is what Nala means in Swahili. Laura said, “My parents’ neighbors had a Labrador puppy back in 2019 with such a good temperament, we reached out to the same breeder and reserved a female for a litter a year later.” They have had Nala for just over 1-and-a-half years. She was a birthday present for Stefan. The family loves her extreme loyalty and her sweet temperament. Stefan specifically said that he loves her soft fur. Laura said, “If she ever escapes the backyard, she can almost always be found sitting on the front porch or curled up in her dog pen in the garage.” She absolutely loves to jump on top of things. When asked what Nala has taught the family, Laura jokingly said, “I have learned that if there is reincarnation, everyone wants to come back as my dog.” Finally, Nala loves to play soccer with anyone. She has destroyed five of Stefan’s soccer balls already! She loves a good belly rub like any puppy and is more than happy to sit right up against you so you don't forget she is there! Laura said, “We are truly lucky to have such an obedient dog who is always willing to please.” We hope that Nala is extra spoiled this holiday! #FelidaFineLiving #December2021 #PreciousPets #Nala #YellowLab #WrittenByJuliaZabell #ProfessionalPhotoBy Kara Santa Ana Photography #SponsoredBy Paulson's Floor Coverings Vancouver

Introducing Maree Seibel! Maree is a 16-year-old junior at Columbia River High School. She has been playing soccer since she was 6 years old, where she plays the position of forward. When it’s soccer season at Columbia River, she plays on their varsity team. During the rest of the year, she plays for the Olympic Development Program, which is based out of Salem, Oregon. Maree just began playing for the Olympic Development Program, or ODP, in 2021, where she is coached by Kat Tarr. Maree says how Kat is “an amazing role model” due to her high-level accomplishments in soccer, most notably playing on the Portland Thorns of the National Woman’s Soccer League, as well as several other national and international leagues. Throughout her time playing soccer, Maree has participated in several tournaments and traveled all over the Pacific Northwest. Some examples of tournaments she’s competed in with her team include the Mt. Hood Challenge, Nike Cup, and Clash at the Border. With now being a part of the ODP, she is going to be traveling a lot more (and far) in the upcoming months. After graduating high school in 2023, hopefully with her associate degree from Clark College through their running start program, Maree plans on attending a 4-year college with a good business program. There, she hopes to pursue a master’s degree in business administration. She also wants to play soccer in college, so her top two schools right now are University of San Diego and Grand Canyon University. When asked what her favorite thing is about soccer, she answered, “I love the competition and the teamwork. Soccer is my happy place. I love being able to leave everything out on the field every day and work hard. It’s rewarding to be on a team that does everything for each other.” I think that she speaks for everyone else who has also found passion in their sport. #FelidaFineLIving #December2021 #AthleteOfTheMonth #MareeSeibel #WrittenByAnnaliseSelby #SponsoredBy Lake Shore Athletic Club

Diane Springer was the oldest of five children in a family where quality time was spent crafting. Over the years Diane has worked with glass, cloth, clay, paper, ink and wood, but her focus is working with gourds. Diane first started gourd art after her husband purchased a decorated gourd for her at an art fair. She then took a two-hour gourd class from a county extension agency and was hooked. Before the art happens, the gourds are dried, sometimes for a year, and then cleaned. The moldy outside is scrubbed off and the fibrous tissue and seeds, from the inside are removed – a very tedious task. The gourds that she purchases from the southwest have much thicker shells due to the longer growing time, which is needed for her carving. Each gourd is a creative fun journey for her. Working in the round on imperfect surfaces, with a huge variety of gourd shapes, is always a welcome challenge. Diane may just paint the gourd, use a wax resist technique, stain, wood burn or carve it. She may add embellishments such as beads, rocks, or driftwood. Sometimes she weaves the top edge with pine needles. Finally, several coats of varnish are applied. It is this creative process that guides and excites her. Diane loves art, math puzzles, and problem solving. Her fabulous gourds are featured in Galleries in Vancouver, Longview, Camas, Washington and Canby, Oregon. She may be reached at [email protected] #FelidaFineLiving #December2021 #ArtfullyLiving #DianeSpringer #WrittenByJewellStraight

Helen Margaret Brock comes from a family of very creative women. Not only did they embroidery, sew, knit, design leaded glass creations, but they also showed a special creativity in everything they did and an amazing sense of color and design. So, you could say, Helen’s sense of design and appreciation of beauty came naturally. She, and her husband Wayne, lived in Shanghai China for over 3 years, beginning in early 1997. There she worked part time in a local pearl jewelry shop that catered to expatriate residents. She was inspired by the beauty of a pearl, so she learned how to design and create both classic and custom style pearl jewelry as well as shop and purchase components at the pearl markets in Suzhou, Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong. The variety of size, shape and color of pearls caught her attention. Virtually all of Helen’s designs incorporate pearls, semi-precious gemstones, and sterling silver findings to create custom necklace, bracelet and earring designs that you won’t find in any retail stores. Helen has displayed her designs for several years at shows in Vancouver WA, the “Art & Elegance” in Beads shows in Portland, Oregon, at the “Artists in Vineyard “shows in Ridgefield, WA, the “Inaugural Washougal Art Festival”, and the” La Center Arts and Culture tour.” To top it off, Helen's middle name “Margaret” means pearl! If you would like to be notified of upcoming events or have something designed especially for you, you may contact Helen through the website at www.PearlsbyHelen.com #FelidaFineLiving #November2021 #ArtfullyLiving #HelenMargaretBrock #writtenbyjewellstraight

The 3rd annual Felida Open Charity Golf Tournament took place on Saturday, September 11, 2021 at Pine Crest Golf Course. The event was created by Joe and Brenda Bjorklund who wanted to create an annual community event and at the same time raise funds for a great charity. This year, fundraising will support the Clark County Food Bank. There were 84 golfers and the event began at 10:00 am and went through 3:15 pm. The "After Party" was at Farrar's Bistro and the meet up began at 5:00 pm. Besides the golf tournament there was also an amazing raffle that included gift baskets from local businesses. It was a huge success and is sure to gather another big crowd in 2022. #FelidaFineLiving #November2021 #felidaopenhouse

This month’s athlete is Macey McCoy, a 15-year-old who attends Columbia River High School. Her sport is volleyball, which she has been playing for 5 years. She is currently on Columbia River’s junior varsity team, where she plays the position of setter. She loves volleyball because of the fast-paced gameplay; “The sport keeps me on my toes!” she says. From her five years of playing the sport, her favorite coach has been her mom, who coached her for four of those years. Macey says that her mom has been a great mentor in the sport. In addition to her mom, she says that her close friend, Lauren Dreves, has been an inspiration to her too. Macey has participated in several tournaments throughout the Pacific Northwest, as well as one in Reno, Nevada. Her team has placed first in many of their tournaments and has even made it to national qualifiers. Her favorite moment from her volleyball career was when her team was playing a tournament in Spokane; it was 10:00 pm and her team was still playing in the championship game. There was no one else in the gym besides her team and their opponents. On game point, the libero of her team gave her a flawless pass, which she did a quick set to her team’s middle, who proceeded to hit the ball almost right on the 10-foot line. This play resulted in her team becoming the tournament champions. Playing with a close-knit group of girls has shown her that “teamwork and communication are key components of a functioning team.” After graduating high school, Macey plans to play volleyball in college while she studies to become a pediatrician or other kind of physician. For someone looking to start playing volleyball, she recommends playing a couple of recreational games to see if you like the sport; if you do, then trying out for a team would be a great idea! #FelidaFineLiving #November2021 #AthleteOfTheMonth #MaceyMcCoy #WrittenByAnnaliseSelby #SponsroedBy Lake Shore Athletic Club

Joseph Edmundson is a high school student at the Vancouver School of Arts and Academics. His art form is music and he plays in the school’s jazz band. When he first came to VSAA, it was for the visual arts program and he had only taken band class for fun. After a while, he realized that he preferred to play music and this year will be his sixth year participating in band. Joe explained, “I first chose to attend VSAA because growing up I had always loved the arts, and to find an opportunity to do what I loved during the school day and get better at it was amazing.” Joe and his family have lived in the Salmon Creek area since October of 2006 when they moved from California. His immediate family consists of five members, including himself. He has an older brother who goes to Washington State University and a younger sister who attends Chinook Elementary School. His father works for the Vancouver School District doing maintenance on school buses and his mother works for Hallmark. At school, Joe also participates a lot in the theater program, where he often auditions and performs in school plays. “I am also a part of our school's thespian society. We compete annually at the thespian festival. I absolutely love the people behind all of it and it is a ton of fun.” Some of his best accomplishments include his performance in a musical that VSAA put on, called Oliver. Joe was an understudy for a character called Noah Claypole and he also played in multiple other roles where he performed in large group choreography and singing. Joe details, “It took many hours of hard work to prepare for this show and I'm very proud of what I managed to accomplish.” Another accomplishment Joe is proud of is how he managed to maintain good grades during distance learning over the last year; he ended the first semester with a 4.0 GPA. Joe explained, “I did my best to keep myself on track without the usual guidance from my teachers, and my hard work paid off.” Read more about Joe in the November edition of @felidafinelivingwa #FelidaFineLiving #November2021 #YoungAchievers #JoeEdmundson #WrittenBySophiaZabell #SponsoredBySouthwestWashingtonLearningCenter

Come November, a sense of family, food, comfort, and warmth begins to fill the air. Families know that the holidays are upon us and with them extra time spent with loved ones. “Thank You, Omu,” written by Oge Mora is a lovely story about a woman who welcomes all to her door to feed them and steep them in the warmth and comfort that comes from food prepared with love. Omu has prepared a delicious stew that she has left cooking on her stove until dinnertime. After preparing her ingredients to cook, she goes to enjoy a story. While enjoying her story, the wonderful aroma drifts out her windows and down to the street below. It isn’t very long after sitting down that she hears a knock. She wonders who it is and comes to find a little boy. He asks about that most delicious smell. Omu tells him that it is stew. He looks at her and says, “Mmm, stew!” Omu takes a moment to think but realizes that she has made more than enough to share. She dishes up a bowl for the hungry boy. After eating, he shares his appreciation and leaves. Omu tries to continue reading her story; however, she is interrupted by people in her community. A policewoman, a hot dog vendor, a cab driver, a doctor, an actor, and even the mayor come by to find the source of the tantalizing smell of stew. Each time, Omu opens her door and dishes up a bowl of food for her unexpected visitor. By dinnertime, Omu opens her pot to dish a bowl for herself only to find it empty. She thinks to herself, “There goes the best dinner I ever had!” Feeling sad and hungry, Omu sits down. “Knock! Knock! Knock!” she hears. When Omu answers her door, she soon realizes that the kindness she gave throughout the day to people in her community is returned tenfold. I hope that this holiday season brings you much love and a strong sense of community with those around you. Happy Reading! Looking for a new side dish for your fall Thanksgiving meal? This recipe blends together a couple of favorites – brussels sprouts and butternut squash – you can’t go wrong! The recipe is simple and can be prepared in advance. The amounts can easily be adjusted also, so whether you are cooking for 2 or 22, this will feed them one and all! Ingredients 4 cups brussels sprouts, trimmed and halved 4 cups bite size cubed butternut squash (other winter varieties would work also) 4-6 Tbsp olive oil salt and pepper to taste 1 cup dried cranberries 1 cup pumpkin seeds Directions Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Spread the brussels sprouts and squash on a large roasting pan and coat with olive oil, salt, and pepper. (Depending on your crowd you may need two separate pans) Roast for about 20 minutes, both vegetables should cook in about the same about of time. Stir every 5-6 minutes and use a fork to check for doneness. While the vegetables are roasting, heat a fry pan to medium high heat and add the pumpkin seeds, stirring constantly for about 5 minutes to give them a toasted flavor. When the vegetables are done, allow to cool just a bit and then place in a large bowl. Add in the cranberries and pumpkin seeds, reserving a few seeds to sprinkle on top when you serve. Such a simple and healthy side dish and the presentation is fantastic! #FelidaFineLiving #November2021 #ResidentRecipe #ButternutSquashAndBrusselsSprouts #WrittenByPatriceBaugher #ATasteOfFall

"His role as the Weather Gardener was cemented when Steven Wolff’s Valentine’s Day weekend prediction of 6-13” of snow came true. He first noticed a severe snowstorm weather pattern developing for our area and became concerned when the local news hadn’t mentioned it. He voiced his concerns in a post on the Southwest Washington Area Gardeners (SWAG) Facebook Group. And the rest, as they say, is history! Steven first became fascinated with meteorology when Hurricane Gilbert hit Texas in 1988 and spawned 28 tornadoes in and around San Antonio. He bravely became a storm chaser and would drive to North Texas to “chase” tornadoes and supercell thunderstorms. A few years later he moved to Alaska and received informal meteorology training from a family friend who was Chief Meteorologist at NOAA (National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration). After Alaska, Steven found himself drawn to the Pacific Northwest and has lived here for almost 20 years. When Steven realized how bad the weather could get in February, he urged everyone to prepare and shop early. Some people scoffed at his advice because the news and weather apps hadn’t caught up with it yet; but the ones who followed it were grateful to be prepared for the power outages and the snow and ice. SWAG members were so thankful the forecasts gave them enough warning to keep themselves as well as their plants and pets safe, that they begged for more weather updates. His chance to share extreme weather updates came in June when temperatures reached 117 degrees. This time Steven’s warnings saved countless lives for livestock and other animals. Steven’s gift of detecting these severe weather patterns is making an amazing difference in the lives of people, plants, and animals in our area. He appreciates the genuine interest and outpouring of support from his neighbors near and far." Meet the Innocenti family! "Justin and Emily followed their dreams and bought a house on a little over 5 acres in the Fair Acres area two and a half years ago with the intention of remodeling it. As Emily recounted her tales of construction mishaps and discoveries, the 1948 movie Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House starring Cary Grant and Myrna Loy comes to mind. The 1986 remake was called The Money Pit if that gives you any idea of what they may have encountered on their remodeling adventures. Let’s just say it is taking “way longer” than expected! Emily and Justin met when a dental friend of Emily’s from high school set them up. When they first were married, they lived in East Vancouver for a few years before moving to Felida. They lived in the Erickson Farms development for five years before moving to the "farm". Before becoming consumed with their remodel, they loved spending time at the coast and hiking and enjoying nature. Gianna, their 10-year-old daughter, attends Lakeshore Elementary and is a kind and compassionate young lady who understands the value of inclusiveness. She loves to ride horses and bake. Over the last 18 months, Gianna has taken a big interest in cooking and baking and, in her mom’s words, “is pretty darn good at it.” She also makes the best browned butter chocolate chip cookies! She also loves spending time on her iPad chatting with friends and playing Roblox and other games. She can be found spending time doing arts and crafts and creating interesting art with paints and colored pencils. As a child, Kathleen Duncan was introduced to woodturning by watching her father make knobby-legged, Early American furniture for the family. She was fascinated as chips flew off the spinning wood. Unfortunately, it never occurred to either of them that he could teach her the craft he so enjoyed. It was not until after his death that she first attempted, rather unsuccessfully, to turn something on the lathe she had inherited from him. Little did she know that those early attempts would lead her to an art through which she would eventually meet turners from all over the world and even take her to Turkey to demonstrate her craft. Many of the woods she uses are from trees that have been cut down due to disease or construction. This is wood, that would otherwise have been burned or ended up in a landfill. It is exciting, to Kathleen, to find the hidden beauty in a chunk of wood. Even the very plain pieces of wood offer design opportunities. Her carved and burned designs mimic textures and patterns found in nature. Each piece she turns must have a balance between touch, shape, proportion and any embellishments she decides to include. She turns a variety of items - both functional and artistic – everything from large bowls to delicate Christmas ornaments, magic wands to spinning tops, gnomes to spheres. As much as she enjoys turning by myself, what gives her the greatest satisfaction is showing children the magic that we call “woodturning”. Kathleen is a member of the American Association of Woodturners, the Cascade Woodturners, The Southwest Washington Woodturners and the Pacific Northwest Woodturning Guild. Her work is available in several local Galleries. Kathleen Duncan may be reached at: [email protected]. You can visit Kathleen’s studio during the Clark County Open Studios Tour Nov 6-7 where she will be one of the featured artists. https://artstr.org/open-studios. #FelidaFineLiving #October2021 #ArtfullyLiving #KathleenDuncan #WrittenByJewellStraight

Hezechariah “Riah” Poching is a 14-year-old football player who just began his freshman year at Skyview High School. His sport is football, which he has been playing for 6 years. He plays the positions of tight end and defensive end. He is very excited to finally be able to play football for Skyview and is aiming to make their varsity team this fall; “my favorite moment [from football] is finally stepping on Skyview’s turf as a player which I have been waiting for years to do,” he says. Riah looks up to his older brothers who have also played football, providing inspiration throughout his years of football. He also gives a lot of credit to the rest of his family, as well as past and current Skyview varsity players, for motivating and pushing him to be the athlete that he is today. Additionally, meeting collegiate football player DJ Uiagalelei, a quarterback at Clemson University, showed him what it’s like to play football at the college level and instilled a desire to continue on to that level himself. From his years of football, Riah has learned that the team dynamic is the most important thing for success as an individual. He says, “I’m only good because my team makes me good,” supporting and encouraging him to be the best athlete that he can be. Most of all, he loves football because he is able to be surrounded by friends and train right by their side. For someone looking to start playing football, he recommends playing for yourself and not anyone else; at the end of the day, their opinion is not going to matter. What matters is how much work you put in and your level of discipline. #FelidaFineLiving #AthleteOfTheMonth #RiahPoching #WrittenByAnnaliseSelby #SponsoredBy Lake Shore Athletic Club

At home, Mady has two kids, Marli who is four and Bo who is two. She described, “Marli is very creative, she loves telling stories, building things, and using her imagination. Bo loves knocking things down (sorry, Marli), balls and bats and golf clubs. He is really living up to being two.” Her husband, Ben, is also in education and loves all things baseball. Outside of teaching, some of Mady’s favorite hobbies include afternoon naps and long walks through Target with a giant cold brew, “I am really succeeding in getting my children to also enjoy these hobbies (minus the coffee, they don’t need caffeine).” Like for many other teachers, online teaching has been a struggle. Mady explained that adapting to online learning required learning new programs and finding what can work for students and their computers and getting the correct supplies out to students have been some of the challenges that were dealt with. In the future, Mady hopes to get better at utilizing the school’s 3D printing technology. #FelidaFineLiving #October2021 #EducationMatters #MadyMcGrew #writtenbysophiazabell

Aubrey Nicole Vilhauer is an eighth grader at Thomas Jefferson middle school who has already entered the world of entrepreneurship. Aubrey first started baking when she was two years old alongside her grandma, Joni. She started selling her baked goods about two years ago, and it has slowly turned into a business. Aubrey discussed, “I enjoy baking because it is a way for me to get away from distractions and anxiety. I also used to be a perfectionist, but baking has helped me to realize that everything doesn't have to be perfect for it to be great.” She further explained that since she is the person who has stared at a cake for hours, she is going to see every little thing that is wrong with it. She also observed that whoever receives the cake doesn't even notice. “I also love being able to give things to people that make them happy!” At school, Aubrey especially enjoys the social aspect of it, like getting to see her friends. She explained, “My favorite part of the school day is lunch because I get to hang out with my friends but, my favorite subject is probably English because I like all the activities we get to do with it.” Aubrey’s grandparents have lived in the area all of their lives and have lived in a total of 22 homes. When she was first born, she lived in Portland for a year, but other than that she has lived here her whole life as well. In her immediate family she has her dad, Taylor who works in Downtown Vancouver, her mom, Haley, who also works Downtown in her own practice at the Vancouver Wellness Studio, her brother Graham who is 12, and her sister Brynley who is 8. Her grandma Joni, who got her into baking, owns Modao resale in Hazel Dell with her Aunt Bailey. Aubrey’s grandpa, Sam, and her Uncle Jordan own Vilhauer Construction. Some of Aubrey’s other hobbies outside of school include soccer, baking, cooking, and hanging out with friends and family. Right now, Aubrey thinks she may want to pursue a career in the medical field and be a surgeon, but admits that in a couple years she could change her mind. #FelidaFineLiving #October2021 #YoungAchievers #AudreyNicoleVilhauer #WrittenBySophiaZabell #SponsoredBySouthwestWashingtonLearningCenter

"October in Felida means cool, crisp evenings, pumpkins and the inevitable arrival of Trick or Treating. With the spirit of Halloween in the air, we couldn’t help but give this month’s spotlight to our cover family’s darling pup. Littlebit is a six year old rescue from Korea. According to his DNA test, he is 100% East Asian Village Dog or a Super-Mutt. He has been part of the Greene family for four and a half years. When asked what they enjoy about Littlebit, Anna said, “He is a very unique dog. He is a cat-dog in that he is extremely calm and rarely barks. He loves to sit very stoically near us and stare into the wind, deep in thought. His nickname is Bran (from Game of Thrones). He is the ultimate cuddle companion. We love him so much!” Littlebit is actually a model for “the furryfolks.” a lifestyle brand for dogs. He is a great model because he freezes in place when he wears any type of clothes and doesn't move. Photographer’s love this about him! Littlebit is also very protective of his four-year-old human, Luke, and can be found sleeping next to his bed on a very regular basis. Anna also shared, “We’ve also recently learned he loves to hunt and catch flies. He only barks once every few weeks, so he’s almost completely silent.” Littlebit is described as “a very polite beggar.” He has perfected the art of sitting and silently staring, putting a well placed paw on a leg to signal that he wouldn’t mind a scrap or two. He will also do this when he would love someone to pet him. This is precisely how he stole their hearts at the adoption event where they found him. The Green Family has learned that “the patience and the love that he gives is incredible. Also, naps are important.” #FelidaFineLiving #October2021 #PreciousPets #Littlebit #GreeneFamilyPet #WrittenByJuliaZabell

Meet Jasmine and Fernando! They are two dogs that I am especially fond of since they are part of my family. My family consists of my veterinarian dad, Ari, my Mom, Michelle and older siblings, Max and Sophia. Jasmine is a 12-year-old, 120 lb., chocolate Labrador and Bull Mastiff mix. She was named after the Disney princess. Fernando is a mostly black five-year-old Beagle and Cocker Spaniel mix. He was named after the famous song by ABBA. Both pets are rescues and were adopted as puppies from a shelter. Our good friend once commented that our dogs won the pet lottery because they are so spoiled. My favorite thing about both dogs are their personalities. They are different but somehow balance each other. Jasmine is a relaxed, quiet dog. She loves to lie around but gives the best cuddles. Fernando, on the other hand, is very hyper! He loves to ruin his toys the day he gets them. When we were searching for a new puppy to adopt, we wanted a Boxer and my mom wanted a Labrador. She found a shelter that had a litter of half Boxer and half Lab pups. Then she grew and grew and grew. My dad suspected that she wasn't part Boxer and did a DNA test on her. We found out she was actually part Bull Mastiff. My dad said it is valuable to know a pet's DNA so that you can better prepare for ailments or injuries that are associated with their breed. The biggest lesson that has been learned was a sad lesson that took place last fall. Jasmine's littermate, Elias, whom we adopted at the same time, got sick with something called Wobbler syndrome. He was treated for a long time before it became too advanced and he was in too much pain and discomfort. We learned that they really are with us for a short period in our lives, but we are their entire life. It is up to us to make sure they are as loved, treasured and as cared for as possible. My parents always taught us how to give love and care, but now we understand why. We will carry that lesson for the rest of Jasmine and Fernando's lives, as well as the rest of ours to give to our future precious pets. #FelidaFineLiving #September2021 #PreciousPets #JasmineAndFernando #RememberingElias #WrittenByJuliaZabell

Avery Laikyn Henderson had just wrapped up three years at Alki Middle School and recently began at Skyview High School. Avery plays softball and is on a year-round tournament team, which takes up most of her time, which she enjoys. Her team is constantly having fun together and also does other things outside of softball as a team. Avery originally practiced gymnastics and played soccer, but when she moved to Vancouver, she noticed many of her friends played softball so she decided to join in on the fun. She has been playing for the last six years and her main position is Pitcher but she also plays First Base. Avery and her family first moved to the area when she was in third and fourth grade, but then moved to Jacksonville, Florida for a year before moving back in 2018. Her dad is in the U.S Coast Guard and also helps coach her team, her mom volunteers with the Alki PTSA and Skyview Boosters, and her brother will be a senior this year at Skyview. While at Alki, Avery was Vice President for National Junior Honor Society and maintained a 4.0 GPA all three years of middle school. Some of her greatest accomplishments thus far includes hitting a home run, and more recently while pitching in the final game of a tournament she struck out the last batter which led her team to win the championship. In school, her favorite classes are art or math. When she graduates she plans to attend college and veterinary school to become a veterinarian. #FelidaFineLiving #September2021 #YoungAchievers #AveryHenderson #FutureVeterinarian #WrittenBySophieZabell #SponsoredBySouthwestWashingtonLearningCenter

Kelsey Day is a Kindergarten teacher at Sacajawea Elementary School and has been working as a teacher for the last 18 years. She has also taught as a Pre-K and first grade teacher during her career. One of her main teaching goals is to have students love school. Kelsey explained, “Having the youngest students in the building, I feel like it’s my responsibility to show them how wonderful school is. I want to instill a love of learning that they can take with them throughout their school career.” She also described the importance of learning how to read, write, know math, make friends, share, and be kind to one another. She further shares, “They all learn so differently, it’s my job to discover how each student learns and make sure they are successful.” Kelsey absolutely loves her job and because of that she feels she is lucky. Kelsey explained, “Even during the pandemic, teaching on zoom, I loved making connections with my students and families.” One of her favorite parts of her job is working with students in person and watching them grow throughout the year academically and socially. She also enjoys seeing them around town in Vancouver and Felida, “We have such an amazing community here.” She taught kindergarten at WSU Vancouver and used the project approach there, “It’s all about the children’s interests and creating lessons based on what they want to learn about.” Some long term projects she has taught include; robots, bridges, architecture/building, castles, owls and bats. Her favorite subject to teach is writing as she believes it is amazing how much growth her kindergarteners make, “They start in the fall barely able to write their name, and by the end of the year they are writing letters, stories and how-to pieces. It’s one of the areas I can see the most growth.” At home, Kelsey has two kids; her daughter McKenna who is in third grade and her son Joey began seventh grade this year. DeAnn adopted her first boxer when her oldest son graduated high school. Yep, she fully admits to replacing her son with a puppy when he left home to join the US Marine Corps! Over the last five years, DeAnn King has built Wigglin’ Home Boxer Rescue into an amazing organization of more than 300 volunteers – who handle everything from transporting dogs to social media to data entry and record keeping to fostering dogs. Not one person in this organization is paid and most all the volunteers have full-time jobs. DeAnn estimates that she spends 30 hours a week rescuing and rehoming boxers – never mind sleep! The insurance company will treat me fairly; I won’t have any problems. “Unfortunately, this isn’t always the case when someone gets hurt,” said Scott Staples of Schauermann, Thayer, Jacobs, Staples & Edwards. Scott helps people with personal injury cases. Scott was born and raised in Vancouver. After graduating from Hudson’s Bay High School where he met his future wife, he went to Clark College, then transferred to UW. He decided it wasn’t for him and finished at WSU Vancouver as an English major. After graduating, he contemplated his path. At that time, his dad and uncle were lawyers. He decided to check it out and ended up going to Willamette Law School. “It was hard work, but I liked it.” said Scott, “I worked as a clerk during the summer and fortuitously met the right people. Craig Schauermann asked Scott to work there one summer. That led to Scott working full-time. “My dad actually encouraged me to work with them, he thought they had a great practice and it would be a good opportunity. I’m glad he did.” #FelidaFineLiving

Meet Maria Vazquez! "This month’s athlete practices a sport that’s different and more unique than any sport that’s been featured in this magazine before. Maria does aerial silks, which is a type of exercise where one performs different poses and routines while up in the air hoisted by fabric, or silks. Maria likes this activity because she gets to spin and dance in the air, which is a fun, nontraditional way to get exercise. Maria is 17 years old, and she is enrolled in the Running Start program through Columbia River High School. She practices with her aerial studio in Portland, Oregon multiple times a week, where she takes different classes to improve her skills. She’s been doing this for a little over 4 years now. Most recently, she completed a 15-week intensive professions training program. This involved frequent classes that challenged her both physically and mentally. Being around professionals both humbled and inspired her, making her want to be the best she could be at aerial silks. By the end of the program, Maria had choreographed two acts for the end of intensive performance. Her favorite thing about aerial is nailing a move that she’s worked on for a while. Just like dance or gymnastics, it takes a lot of dedication to get down and master certain moves. A lot of people wonder if hanging high up in the air, performing flips and spins, gives one afraid of falling. Maria says that she still gets scared of this sometimes, but it’s all part of the sport. For someone looking to try their hand at aerial, she encourages that you try taking a class or two, but “get ready to feel weak.” It takes discipline and time to get it down, and you learn something new every day.
