250 SWB Ltd … 1967 Ferrari 330 GTC. 10745. Supplied new via Chinetti in NY USA painted in Azzuro with Black VM8500 hides and fitted Borrani wheels. I purchased the car in 2016 when it was fresh from a magnificent restoration by the artisans in Modena. So difficult to describe but it didn’t appear restored but looked more like it would have done when it was new in 1967. If only every Ferrari restoration was completed to this standard. My photographs certainly don’t do it justice. Not rare and some might say unexciting but I rate it as one of the greatest Ferrari I’ve ever owned. It came with its obligatory Classiche certification and as a bonus a complete set of tools and books. 1977-1981 Ferrari 308 GTB … I specifically choose those years as in the U.K. it was when you could purchase a steel bodied, dry sump carbureted Berlinetta. I think the first arrived in September of 1977, replacing the fibreglass cars and from memory the last was sold around March 1981. I drove thousands of miles in period in all the 308 GTB configurations and in my opinion this era was by far the best. Overnight Ferrari transformed the GTB from the somewhat shoddily built early fibreglass cars but still maintained the amazing balance, power and handling. The roar of the Weber carburettors was so missed in the later injection cars. There were a multitude of options but in my opinion less is best. I hated the large ugly front spoilers… made of fibreglass they just chipped and cracked. If you are buying today be aware that US & Australian market cars were fitted with a wet sump like the GTS. Three wheel options.. 6.5” & 7.5” Cromodora alloys shod with Michelin XWX tyres and Speedline wheels with low profile Pirelli P7’s. Then as now I prefer the 7.5” Cromodoras. Air con is a must and most were built with it. Front spotlights looked ridiculous but I did prefer the dealer fitted 4 branch exhaust from the GT4. I’m hopeless at predicting markets and have no interest in investment but I’m constantly amazed how comparatively cheap these cars are today. Find one that hasn’t been butchered and retains its original spec and you will have one of the sweetest sounding, perfect handling cars Ferrari have ever built. Unless you are stupid they are vice free. I also think they are bloody good looking too. Maranello Concessionaires … Following the Colonel’s orders whatever previously owned Ferrari we held in stock had to be displayed in the car park. This included demo cars. The showroom was reserved for new cars and anything exceptional. It was the responsibility of the car cleaners, for years Andy & Marcel, to park them first thing every morning and return them to the rear garage at the end of the day. Nobody was happier than those two when fuel injection was introduced in 1981 as the cars could easily be started and didn’t foul up from their very short journeys. Incidentally any non Ferrari part exchange whether it even be a Bentley or a Porsche was hidden in the yard behind the garage. Today Tower Garage is almost unrecognisable to this era. Beautifully appointed and I’m sure no buckets in the showroom to catch the water when it rained through the roof but somehow it doesn’t capture the imagination as it did then. I miss the large Ferrari signs on the tower and the massive logo you couldn’t miss when approaching from Ascot. Maranello Concessionaires … 1977 Ferrari 308 GTB. This was one of the early steel bodied cars that was ordered with the optional Air Con, 7.5” wheels and a 308 GT4 four branch exhaust. It was collected by its first owner from the London agents HR Owen late on a November afternoon. The owner set off to drive to his substantial home in North Yorkshire but mid journey he believed he fell asleep and clipped a kerb. He reported that he thought the car cartwheeled nose to tail twice but maybe three times. Miraculously he emerged completely unscathed and as it had finally landed upright he was able to step out. That has to be testimony to the structural strength of the 308 GTB as both doors still opened and closed. By the following Monday morning the car arrived on a truck at MC where it sat for several weeks. The owner was greatly concerned that his wife didn’t discover what had happened as she was apparently against the purchase in the first place. Fortuitously MC had a near identical car in stock which was supplied to the insurers. This time the owner chose to have it trucked to his home. The Colonel, concerned that the wreck might fall into the wrong hands and be improperly repaired, purchased it from the insurance company. Covered by a tarpaulin it sat for several more months outside the Thorpe body shop until one day it was trucked back to the factory. Until very recently I had no idea what happened to it. I’ve now discovered it was totally rebuilt and as done at the factory it would have been faultless. It was then initially sold to Australia. Same chassis number but now it’s a different colour.
