I am not successful with blood pythons…. Two years of trying with a couple pairs gets me one chunky thing 🤷🏼‍♂️. At least it’s cool looking. #bloodpython #bloodpythons #brongersmai #tpositivealbinobloodpython #snake #python #pythons #bloodpythonsofinstagram #bloodpythons #pythonsofinstagram #snakesofinstagram #snake #snakes #flowerbloodpython #hetflowerbloodpython

Why Blood Pythons? 1. Big Snake, smaller package Adult bloods have a big snake feel without achieving “giant snake” status. They are impressive snakes without reaching an unmanageable size. 2. Lots of personality More than other snakes I’ve kept, I notice differences in personality between each of my Bloods. Some are as calm as puppies, others are a bit more “reactive” and high-strung. Learning their personalities and the best way to interact with each one is really fascinating. 3. Attention to detail Bloods require more attention to detail than many of the more beginner species. But I actually see that as a plus. It’s good to be dialed into what our animals need. They require a little more attention to monitoring and controlling temps and humidity, as well as the more frequent cleanings that their liquid waste production requires. 4. Color Development Watching these snakes develop is an absolute joy. Watching a relatively drab baby develop into a jaw-dropping adult is just wild. Hard to put words to it, actually. You just have to see it yourself! 5. COLOR Ok, so the last point was about color. But have you seen their color??? Yes, I know that there are bloods that are mediocre on the color spectrum. But man. Investing in quality animals and seeing the depth, breadth, and saturation of color that is possible in person is literally breathtaking. 6. Line breeding Going beyond simple dominant/recessive/incomplete dominant mutations, the option to work on line breeding of “normals” is really appealing to me. Taking the natural palette of these animals and seeking to enhance them over generations is REALLY cool. Yes, I love the morphs too. But personally, I find it hard to beat a selectively bred RED Blood Python. 7. Untapped Morph Potential There is still SO much to be done on the morph front. Morphs that are just getting established. Morph combinations that haven’t been done yet. New looks that are still being proven out. And some of the new morph combos that have come out over the last year or two are just STUNNING. And still so rare. The sky is the limit! What did I miss? What is your favorite thing about Blood Pythons???

LIGHTING FOR BLOOD PYTHONS, Part 5: Diffusion An important aspect of good lighting for photographing Blood Pythons and other snakes is the topic of diffusion. What is diffusion? Diffused light is light that is filtered by something. We might consider the Sun, a bare flash, or a light bulb to be undiffused light sources. Typically, these undiffused sources are bright, create harsh shadows, and create lots of glare on the skin of shiny snakes like Bloods. Swipe to see the first example, which is a flashlight on a snake. The light is undiffused, coming from a single source, and creating lots of glare and harsh shadows. Note that the color of the snake is quite inconsistent as a result. What does diffusion do? It scatters the light from a direct source so that it is a) not quite as bright, b) softer (ie, shadows not as harsh), and c) typically does not result in as much glare. How do you diffuse light? Filter it through something white. As I mentioned in a previous post, the absolute best diffusion situation is clouds in front of the sun. With diffusion, the bigger the better, and it's hard to get bigger than a sky full of clouds. Swipe to the third slide to see a normal Blood under cloudy skies and see how good the color looks, how even the color is, how soft the shadows are, and how little glare there is. If you are using artificial light sources, there are tons of options. Softboxes and diffusion umbrellas are relatively inexpensive and do an excellent job diffusing the light from a bright flash/strobe/LED light. Swipe to the fourth slide to see an example of a T+ Albino Blood photographed using an external flash and a 36" softbox. Though not as soft as cloudy skies, you still get even color, pretty soft shadows, and minimal glare. So remember: filter that light, and bigger is better! #pythonsofinstagram #snakes #bloodpythons #snakesofinstagram #bloodpython #bloodpythonsofinstagram #pythons #pythonbrongersmai #genesispythons #animals #snakepics #animalpics #PetsOfInstagram #snakelovers #reptilesofinstagram #thereptilereportofficial #reptilesmagazine #flower #volcano #flowerbloodpython #flowerpower #howto #howtophotography #tutorial #photographytutorial

LIGHTING FOR BLOOD PYTHONS, Part 3: White light is good, yellow light is bad. The color of a light source is referred to as "Color Temperature" and is measured in Kelvin. You may have seen a light bulb package that says the light bulb is 5000K. That's the color temperature. Lights around 4000K and lower are very yellow. Incandescent bulbs are usually in that range. As you can see when you swipe images, yellow light doesn't do these snakes any favors, and can even make their reds and oranges look brown. Light bulbs in the 5000-5600K range are much more white in color and much better for showing the true color of these animals. This is closer to what a cloudy overcast day is. Bulbs in the 6500K range are much more blue and should be avoided for this kind of photography as well. You can get fluorescent lights in the appropriate range, but they tend to have a bit of a greenish cast to them. My recommendation, if you're setting up a snake room or photo station, would be to use LED lighting in the appropriate color temperature range. LIGHTING FOR BLOOD PYTHONS, Part 2: Light Direction Matters. Blood Pythons are shiny snakes. Their smooth scales reflect a lot of light. Photographing the same snake from a different angle in relation to a light source can sometimes make it look like a totally different animal. EXAMPLE: Swipe to see the first example, a blood python under nice cloudy skies. But swipe again to see the same snake against a window with cloudy sky light coming in. Because I did that shot from the opposite side of the snake as the light source, what we get is GLARE. And that hides a lot of the color. In order to get better results, you should generally photograph the animal on the same side that the light source is on. (Unless you are going for a more dramatic look). NOTE: even though it may not seem like it, even cloudy skies have a light direction. Before you take photos on a cloudy day, look up and see where the brightest part of the sky is. Then photograph the snake from the same side as that brightest part. If you photograph the snake from the opposite side, you could still end up with glare even on a cloudy day. The BEST time of day for cloudy day photography is around 11am-2pm when the sun is high in the sky and there's less chance of glare from any angle. Questions? And yes, I should have had more foresight and done a title slide for Part 1! #pythonsofinstagram #snakes #bloodpythons #snakesofinstagram #bloodpython #bloodpythonsofinstagram #pythons #pythonbrongersmai #genesispythons #animals #snakepics #animalpics #PetsOfInstagram #snakelovers #reptilesofinstagram #thereptilereportofficial #reptilesmagazine #flower #volcano #flowerbloodpython #flowerpower

LIGHTING FOR BLOOD PYTHONS, Part 1: Cloudy Skies. As you probably know, not all light is created equal, especially when it comes to photographing Blood Pythons. They can look amazing or subpar, depending on the quality of the lighting. I'm going to do a few posts pointing out some lighting tips to help us all show these incredible animals in all their glory! In my opinion, an overcast sky is among the best lighting conditions for photographing Bloods. But why? Two primary reasons: it's a large light source, and it's very white. Since the sun is shining through the clouds, the clouds act as a giant diffuser and essentially become a large light source. And large light = soft light, which minimizes shadows and makes them look great. Also, the light is very white, which leads to more accurate color capture on a camera. HOWEVER, not all cloudy skies are equal. If the sun is covered by a cloud but the rest of the sky is blue, you'll get a really bluish cast on your snake which leads to less accurate color coming through. Compare first photo (under perfectly cloudy sky) to second photo (same snake under overcast but lots of blue sky showing). Any questions?
